Unique, innovative middle years programs within a wide and diverse curriculum

This year we attended the cattle show at the Dubbo Show with the opportunity to break in cattle to lead at the end of last year. We took five quality Shorthorn heifers and had them entered into the Heifer class, and Breed class. These two competitions demonstrate the quality of our animals against others as heifers, which are cows that haven’t had calves yet, and the Shorthorn breed.

The students were entered into the junior judging, paraders competition. The junior judging competition asks the students to judge the quality of four very similar animals and place them first to fourth. The top five stu-dents in each age group then are to speak in front of the audience as to why they placed the animals in that order. This competition is an excellent way to teach students the value of quality in each respective breed. The paraders competition is where the students leads an ani-mal around the show ring and gets judged on how well they present the quality of the animal to the judge as if encouraging the judge to purchase the animal over the other animals.

These competitions can be quite intimidating, not only with the fact that the students are leading over half a tonne of animal but they have to do this in front of hun-dreds of people. It was a credit to our students in the way they handled this pressure, particularly as some of them hadn’t experienced this before. It was a great show, and one that I really enjoyed attending due to the initiative our students displayed which made my job a breeze.

I would particularly like to thank Lincoln Job for the use of his cattle and Andrew Mills for his assistance with the animals and students at the show.

Dubbo Show – Cattle Competition, 2013

Welcome back to Term Two.

For staff is has been a valuable time with training provided in the new Australian Curriculum and its implications for implementation in Mathematics, Science, English and History next year. We were also able to update our skills in the Non-violence Crisis Intervention Program the College applies to support our Positive Behaviour for Learning process.

On this note six students have been drawn from more than 2000 ticket which have been handed out for good behaviour. The winners are: Mary Hangan, Joel Lalicz, Daniel O’Brien, Shelby Smith, Tamika McNaughton and Kathryn Moy. Congratulations and Well Done!

In staff changes we welcome Joeseph Mirabito to the Maths faculty and Kevin Battle to the TAS staff for the remainder of the year. I can also now congratulate Mr Graham Black who has gained promotion as our Head Teacher HSIE. Ms Marisha Blanco also returns to South Campus as Head Teacher PDHPE. These appointments bring a strong depth of experience and skill to our school leadership team.

I highlighted a number of successes at the recent State Swimming Carnival in the last newsletter. It also needs to be noted that our Under 16 Girl’s relay team achieved a fourth place for the second year in a row. Our timed relay team also finished second. Both are outstanding results at State level.

Just a reminder that our next vaccination day is the 20th May. It is very important that all students participating in this program have a good breakfast before the immunisation. A large number of students were at school without this preparation prior to the last session.

Your support for our uniform policies this year has been very much appreciated. As the weather cools down can you please ensure that all winter clothing, especially sloppy joes and jumpers, meets the uniform code.

Next week the annual NAPLAN tests will be delivered from Tuesday 14th May to Thursday 16th May. All students in Year 7 and Year 9 will sit the tests.

Can I also commend the Making a Difference (MAD) Driving Program. These sessions will be held at the Dubbo Rescue Squad Headquarters in Cobra Street and run from 6pm to 9pm. More details on dates for the program are included inside.

Our school Athletics Carnival will be held on Friday 24th May at Barden Park.

Finally I would like to encourage you to send in a Voluntary Contribution. This year we plan to use funding generated from these contributions to continue expanding our library collection and to provide a range of extra-curricular activities in the interest group sessions on Tuesdays. Our contribution for 2013 has remained at $120 per student or $200 per family. Thus far 39 families have sent in a contribution. In a school of almost 800 students this is disappointing. I have therefore extended the time for these to be sent to school until Friday 24th May. A form is provided to assist with this process. All contributions made by this date will go into a draw for three prizes. An Xbox with games (valued at more than $400) and two $100 fuel vouchers.

Our next P&C meeting for the new Term will be on Monday 13th May from 7.30pm in the school library. Please feel welcome to join us.

Creating mature and responsible citizens

Term one has been massive in regard to college sport with all campuses providing a number of representatives for various teams. We have also been lucky enough to have had many students make Western Area CHS rep-resentative teams. These performances are outlined below:

Swimming: Dubbo College had over 30 representatives at NSW CHS carnival. Highlights included: u/16 Girls Relay team (Carly Andrews, Sharnia Dimmock, Matilda Munn and Keely Potter) finishing fourth in state. Connor Stewart claimed a silver medal in the 12-15 Multidisabil-ity 50m race.

Golf: Dayne Gardiner Western Area stroke play cham-pion and Jessie Carolan made semi-finals of Western Area match play competition where he was defeated 2-1.

Boys Hockey: Western Area CHS champions after dominating all games. Western Area Representatives: Jack Eckford, Hunter Medcalf, Dalton Medcalf and Luke Carman

Girls Hockey: After a win over Gilgandra are through to round 3 and will play Condobolin in the next round.

Lawn Bowls: At Western Area carnival team 1(Ryan McGuire, Trent McGuire and Keedan McGuire) were Western area champs and will play in state final in Cro-nulla in August while team 2 (KeelyMcGuire, Logan Cole-Fistr, Bradley Burrow) were undefeated all day and unlucky not to progress. Western Area representatives: Ryan McGuire and Trent McGuire.

Boys Soccer: Through to round three after a resound-ing win over Kandos High. They will now take on Forbes High. Western Area representatives: Justin Pickering and Josh Archer.

Girls Soccer: Through to round four after strong wins over Peak Hill and Kandos. They now take on Mudgee High. Western Area representatives: Taylah Gray, Syke Munro.

Rugby Union: Currently team is being finalised to take part in CHS competition. Western Area representatives: Mat Neil

Tennis: Selection trials have just been completed and College teams are: Boys Sam Wells, Corey Blattman, Jarryd Buckland and Lucas Blattman. Girls: Maddie Buckland, Tayla Smith, Jessica Gawthorne and Molly Brown. These teams will take part in first rounds of the CHS competition during term two.

Boys Squash: defeated by Warren Central in round one.

Girls Squash: through to Western Area semi- finals.

Girls Basketball: Western Area runners up after wins over The team are now through to the Final 20 teams in state and will play North West winners in term 2. Western Area representatives: Melita Hampton, Ash Taylor and Abby Merrit.

Boys Basketball: Finished third in Western Area after wins over Gilgandra High, Condobolin High and Nyngan High. Western Area representatives: Kade Ellis.

Girls Cricket: defeated in round two by Peak Hill Cen-tral.

Boys Cricket: defeated Narromine and Condobolin High. Play West Wyalong in round 4 in term four. State representative: Ben Patterson NSW CHS second eleven.

Girls Touch: defeated Gilgandra High in round one but were defeated by a well drilled Dunedoo Central 4-1 in round two.

Boys Touch: lost in a drop off to Gilgandra High in round one.

Rugby League: Playing first round against Peak Hill in week three. Western Area representatives: Jai Dunn and Kaide Ellis.

Netball: Congratulations to South Campus team who finished fourth in Western Area after Orange divisional day. Senior Campus defeated by Mudgee High in round four. South Campus under 15 team finished third in the Western area in that competition. Western area repre-sentatives: Leah Read and Zoe Basham Coming Events. A second payment of $150 is now due for the children attending the year 8 excursion to Sydney on 4 June. Final payment of $200 or reaming balance is due on the 24 May. If you are having any problems in meeting this dead-line please contact the school.

Year 8 Excursion Parents are reminded that a second Vaccination Clinic will be held on Monday, 20 May, 2013.
