• D-Book 6.0 (March 2009) – Required all HD receivers to include broadband network interface

– Required support for MHEG interaction channel

• D-Book 6.2.1 (May 2010) – Additions to support xPlayer-type services

– Buffer model for IP streaming

– “back-to-back” playback of streams for advert insertion

– “True Persistent Store”, backed by flash memory or hard disk

– AES encryption of IP streams

MHEG-5 Interaction Channel

• Enables an extension to broadcast services to be delivered

via an IP connection

• Interactive applications and associated data can be

accessed either via the broadcast transmission or via the

IP connection

• Broadcast delivered content augmented with content -

OTT services, information services, online shopping, social

networking, interactive games.

• Broadcasters have full editorial control of user experience

BBC iPlayer on

• Closed beta evaluation period

started in Dec 2009

• Beta trial opened to viewers in

Jan 2010 – Humax HD receivers

• Roll-out to all Freesat HD boxes

and HDTVs this year

• ITV Player coming soon

Requirements:

• Compliance with D-Book 6.2.1

• Suitable Content Protection

• Passing BBC Product QA

All FVHD receivers optimise MHEG Interaction channel to

deliver on demand content

Access to other channels archives / catch-up services

Testing xPlayer

• D-Book 6.2.1 test suites already released, including

xPlayer functionality – first product test Dec 2010

• BBC have provided test materials covering additional

optional functionality e.g. increased bit-rate for HD

video

• These optional features will be included in the next

D-Book

DTG Connected TV Programme

• Developing technical specification for UK Connected TV

products and services with 155 member organisations

• Requirements submitted by BSkyB, Virgin Media, YouView

and LoveFilm

• D-Book 7 in two parts: Part A - the broadcast specification

and Part B - the hybrid Connected TV specification

• Specification will provide core specification for YouView,

Sky, Virgin Media etc to build trademarks on to support

their services

3DTV

The DTG and 3D

• DTG launched first UK industry

consultation on 3D TV in March 2009

• 78% said 3DTV was an evolutionary

next step for high-definition TV

• 75% said that the DTG should

assume a leading role in helping to

define standards for early 3D

broadcasting systems

Page 11: DTG_LTE

3D standards: the story so far

• A technical standard has been approved for 3-D

Blu-ray

• HDMI 1.4 is ready for carrying 3D

• What is currently missing is a standard for delivering 3D over

broadcast infrastructure.

• Work is starting in the DVB, EBU and SMPTE to achieve a clear

standard and the DTG will profile this for the UK.

LTE and Potential impact on DTT

Page 14: DTG_LTE

LTE & DTT coexistence

• 800 MHz band (UHF channels 61-69) co-ordinated across

Europe for mobile use

• Germany already auctioned LTE frequencies £££

• As TV receivers have tuners covering 21-69, several areas

where interference can happen:

– MDU (e.g. blocks of flats) using distribution on channels in 60s

– Adjacent channel interference (59 & 60 used in about 7.15 million

homes)

– Hole punching in existing DTT coverage possible due to dense

transmitter network for LTE

Page 15: DTG_LTE

LTE & DTT coexistence

• DTG Testing running tests on existing receiver zoo to

understand impact on products

• OFCOM running detailed interference tests on small

sample of receivers

• Trial happening in January at single DTT site, with

deliberate interference on “sacrificial multiplex”

– Possible consumer impact if rescanning during trial period
