The Model 501K-1 is a ManualEngine Control Module, whichhas been designed to manuallycontrol the engine via a keyswitch on the front panel. Themodule is used to start and stopthe engine, indicating faultconditions; automatically shuttingdown the engine and indicatingthe engine failure by LED givingtrue first up fault annunciation.

Operation of the module is via athree position key switchmounted on the front panel withSTOP(O), RUN(I) and START(II)positions. In the O position theDC supply is removed from themodule and the run relay andalarm output are de-energised. Ifthe switch is turned to the I

position the module is poweredup and the run relay is energised,activating the engine fuel/ignitionsystem and the protection hold-off timer is initiated. If the switchis moved to the II position andheld against the spring return, apositive supply is applied to therelevant output terminal and on tothe starter motor. Once theengine has started the switchshould be released and allowed

to return to the I position.

Operation of any of the followingalarms; Low Oil Pressure, HighEngine Temperature, AuxiliaryShutdown, Overspeed(Optional), will cause the runrelay to de-energise. This willremove the fuel/ignition supplyfrom the engine and bring it torest. The alarm output will beactivated giving a positive DC

output.

Each alarm channel has its ownLED indicator and once activatedno further alarm conditions will beaccepted. The alarm output andrelevant LED will remain activeuntil the unit is reset by turning theswitch to the O position.

Overspeed Protection (Optional)is achieved by the fitment of an

additional PCB in the module. Thisprovides integral overspeedprotection derived from either thegenerator HZ output or the enginemagnetic pick-up (specified onordering). The overspeed circuitcontinuously monitors the enginespeed and will shut down theengine immediately if a pre-setspeed level is exceeded. This triplevel is adjustable from 90% to130% of full rated speed and issuitable of both 50Hz or 60Hzsystems.

During engine cranking and for ashort time afterwards theprotection hold-off timer is activeand the relevant alarms inputs areinhibited. This enables the engineto start and achieve normal runningconditions. Once the timer hasexpired the inputs are enabled

providing normal protection fromthe module.

Charge Failure warning is alsoprovided by monitoring the WLterminal on the charge alternator.This operates on a similar principalto the warning lamp fitted in amotor vehicle, should the outputfail the charge fail LED willilluminate. The module will alsoprovide the alternator excitation

current via this connection.
