PostgraduatenursingeducationinNigeria:understandingregisteredandgraduatedstudents’experiencesintheirjourneystoprogrammecompletionorwithdrawal.

Nigerian nursing education grew from initially limited numbers of missionary establishments to a moresubstantial expansion of urban hospital-based schools from 1945. Postcolonial emancipation sparked theUniversityof Ibadan intoopening the firstDepartmentofNursing inNigeria in1965.The firstpostgraduatenursingprogrammecommenced in1988at theObafemiAwolowoUniversity,OsunState. TheUniversityofIbadan in Oyo State and the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in Enugu State started their own postgraduatecourses in 1996 and 2003 respectively. These three universities remain the main postgraduate nursingeducationprovidersinNigeriaforapopulationofapproximately180millionpeople.Nonetheless,Governmentandprofessionalstakeholders,includingtheNigerianNursingandMidwiferyCouncil,areconcernedbythelowgraduation rate of these students (10%), and their relatively high rate of attrition (20%). VIKASHKUMAR(ASSESSEDSEMINAR)Health System Integration in Non Communicable Disease Service Delivery in India: An InstitutionalEthnographyStudyHealth system integrationhasbeen in thepublichealthagenda foralmost fourdecades since theAlma-Atadeclaration that emphasise integrated primary health care. It has been considered as ameans to improveaccess tohealth services and improvehealthoutcomes. Itwasbelieved that an integratedapproachwouldaddress some of the health system’s problems caused by donor driven program and targeted diseaseinterventions such as service duplication, fragmentation within the local health system, poor coordination,interuptioninroutineservicedelivery.Currently,thereisgrowingrecognitiontoadopttheintegratedhealthsystemapproachforthelongtermsustainabilityofdiseasecontrolprogramsandhealthsystemstrengthening(Lawnetal.,2008).Theaimofthepaperistohighlightthestrengthofinstitutionalethnographyapproachtostudy “integrated health system”. Institutional ethnography emphasizes connections among the sites andsituations of everyday life, professional practice, and policymaking. It focuses on local experiences inconfronting and analysing howpeople are being dominated and shapedby an external process and forces.Institutional ethnography approach allows researcher to explore andmap the complex process and systemunderinquiryfromstandpointofpeopleinvolvedinit.

BENBULLENCharcotNeuroarthropathyPatientEducationamongNHSandacademicPodiatristsinScotland

Delayed diagnosis of Charcot Neuroarthropathy (CN) may result in significant deformity, associated withulceration, amputation and a reduced quality of life. Little is currently known as to how this condition isdiscussed among ‘at risk’ individuals in Scotland. An opportunity to explore this aspect of practice wasrecognised throughout a Development and Evaluation of Professional Practice (DEPP) module at QueenMargaret University (QMU). A modified Delphi approach, employing mixed methods, was undertaken todetermine current practice and gain consensus among a group of NHS podiatry colleagues and Lecturers inPodiatry in Scotland.Novel visual tools developed throughout a precedingAdvancing Professional PracticeAmodulewere also evaluated. A convergence codingmatrix allowed identification of four themes concerningrespondents,person-centredcareandthecontentandcontextofCNpatienteducation.

ZUWAINAHUMAIDALMAHROUQIAssessmentofDietaryIntakesofNormalWeight,OverWeightandObeseOmaniFemaleTeenagers’

For many years, obesity and overweight have been global health issues that affect all age groups, fromchildren to adults and the elderly. Obesity and overweight is a problem in Oman, particularly for femaleadolescents. Therefore, a studywas conducted to investigate lifestyle choices among girls aged from15-18year in Ibri district, Oman. One such lifestyle choice is food habits. A total of 59 students (normal weight(n=30),overweight/obese (n=29))wererandomlyselected fromtwoschools toparticipate in thisstudy.Un-weighed7-daydietdiarieswereusedasdatacollection instruments.EthicalprincipleswereconsideredandethicalapprovalwasgrantedfromQMUethicalcommitteeandMinistryofEducation inOman.Additionally,informedconsentwasobtainedfromtheparticipantsandtheirparentsandtheconfidentialityofthecollecteddatawasmaintained.Datafromtheun-weighed7-daydietdiarieswereanalysedusingMicrosoftExcel2010programme and the nutritional software analysis package Netwisp 4.0 (Tinuviel Software). The findingshighlightedthat, therewerenosignificantdifferencesinreporteddietaryintakesbetweenthethreelevelsofBMI groups, p>.05. However under-reporting (as assessed by estimating energy requirements) was high inobeseOmanifemaleadolescentsandacrossallBMIgroups.Thefindingsshow41%participantswerenormalreporters and 59%were under-reporters. Daily reported EI and allmacronutrients were higher among thenormal reporterswhen compared to the under reporterswith the difference being statistically significance(p<.001). In conclusion, the study reveals that the reported food habits do not have a major impact onincreasingtheparticipants’bodyweight.

ANNAMARIARISSO(ASSESSEDSEMINAR)Whatarethemosteffectiveparametersforexercisebasedsensorimotortraininginadultswithorwithoutorthopaedicandsportsrelatedconditions?Asystematicreviewofcurrentliterature.

Objectives: Sensorimotor training (SMT) is a typeof training that focuses on improving the (afferent) inputfromdistal joints inorder to alter the (efferent)motoroutput. Indoing so, this improves the sensorimotorsystem, that translates into an improved joint function in reaction to balance, instability and performanceduring daily tasks and sporting activities. NORMAHFUZAHAHMADDigitalmediatechnologies:Challengesandfutureexistenceofconventionalbroadcasttelevisionnews

One of the many contributing factors that shapes societal progression is through the development andadaptation of technology. Technological transformation affects any society within which it functions. Themedia industry is an industry that is highlymalleable to changes in technology. In a continuous fast-pacedtechnological change we currently live in, information derived from digitalisation of media technology haseliminated conventional forms of barriers inwhichwe seek and consume information. Digitalisation of themedia industry and multiplatform practice have revolutionised methods of news production, delivery andconsumption. Existence and functions of legacy news media organisations are challenged by audience-participatory attributes of new media through proliferation of User-Generated Contents (UGC), mediaautomationandmushroomingdigitalmediaorganisations.Mediadigitalisationempowersaudienceswiththeability to select various platforms to receive news and information, giving audiences voices and greaterautonomythrougheliminationof top-down information flow.Foreseeingapossibly lessdominantsourceofnewsmedium, conventionalnewsproductionarepressuredtoadheretosocietaldemandsthroughnumerousformsofmediaautomationandincreasedaudienceengagement, orriskitsfutureexistenceasanewssourcein the digitalised world of news media. Criminal justice processes require a high level ofdemandonlanguageabilities,e.g.givingyour“sideofthestory”,justifyingyouractions,negotiating/avoidingescalation of potentially threatening situations. Language difficulties are also a risk factor for behaviouralproblemsandvolatilepeerrelationships(Beitchmanetal,2001;RedmondandRice,1998).Thesedifficultiescansubsequentlyimpedeaccesstotargetedservicesandinterventions.

Little is known about the perspectives of the men themselves regarding their own communication andlanguageabilities. In keepingwith the conference theme - “recognising possibilities” - I discuss preliminary findings and howplanning and conducting research in a shared prison/healthcare setting has its own set ofmethodological,ethical,andorganisationalconsiderations.Recognisingpossibilitiesandopportunitiesinthisoftenchallengingandunpredictableinstitutionalenvironment,andrespondingtomakebestuseofsuchpossibilities,hasbeenessentialtomeetingmyresearchgoals.
