The course focuses on the aftermath of 1916 (the period 1916-1921). In addition to an overview of the main political events of the period, Frongach Prison, the War of Independence and the Treaty will be dealt with in some detail. The changing role of women, the living conditions and lives of ordinary people and the re-building of central Dublin will be included.

In recognition of the theme of the centenary celebration that “we will engage with the different traditions on our island and recognise the different narratives (and) respect all traditions as envisaged in the ideals of the Proclamation” special attention will be paid to the part played by Irish men and women in World War 1.

The course aims to further increase teachers’ knowledge of and confidence in teaching the events of the period. Content objectives from the following strand units are addressed: Politics, Conflicts and Society; Continuity and Change over time; Eras of Change and Conflict; Life, Society, Work and Culture in the past and Story. The skills and concepts of working as a historian will be promoted and practiced throughout the course.

This course is aimed at enhancing and further developing teachers competence and self-efficacy in the teaching of Visual Arts to pupils of all ages.

Through engagement in this course teachers will : Deepen their awareness of a range of methodologies in Visual

Arts, so that the child can express feelings through a variety ofart techniques.

SUMMER 2016 Conflict Resolution

In Schools This course aims to build teacher capacity in areas connected to conflict resolution and communication.

It will build on teachers’ skills in listening, questioning,teamwork, differentiation and reflective practice in theclassroom. Teachers will be upskilled in addressing or changing school

culture and in creating and supporting an inclusive schoolenvironment. Course will include presentations, discussion, workshops and

group work By enhancing the above skills you will be better able to

PLAYWORKS: Promoting health, well-being at yard time through positive and active approaches

This course will develop teachers understanding of :

Pupils health and well-being associated with positive activity and play during yard time Strategies to support pupil health and well-being during yard time (such as conflict management skills, resilience skills and ability to organise and manage game skills Playworks as an SSE topic in their school as part of SPHE or well-being. Positivity, behavioural management techniques and games for positive and inclusive yard time A strategic plan on how to implement Playworks schoolwide using one Reflection and analysis in order to choose relevant strategies to develop an inclusive yard time in their school ICT and the tools they can use to promote Playworks, support Playworks and enhance pupil learning.

Teaching Fundamental Movement Skills in PE

through Tag Rugby

The aim of this summer course for teachers is to introduce Tag Rugby to teachers’ PE classes as a means of helping in the acquisition of an appropriate range of movement skills across the PE strands.

Largely practical based, the course will examine Fundamental Movement Skills, Fundamental Games Skills and Game Specific Skills. There will be an emphasis on pedagogical skills, teaching methodologies and class management skills building on existing knowledge in PE to allow teachers to adapt lessons to pupil’s interest or to include children with special educational needs. It will also highlight ways to integrate numeracy, literacy & SPHE programmes in a co-curricular way.

The Course will be delivered by Coach Development Officers and Community Rugby Officers from Leinster Rugby.

TEACHING MATHEMATICS IN A FUN WAY

This face to face course will provide participants with an opportunity to test out their knowledge and advance skills and competencies in the teaching of mathematics at primary level. In particular participants will engage with materials and resources to problem solve and explore exciting ways to motivate our pupils and to bring a heightened sense of enjoyment to teaching and learning mathematically.
