• Physical screen to determine any

physical limitations, including

range of motion; strength; tone;

sensation; and coordination in the

trunk, neck, upper and lower limbs.

Any pain you experience is also

recorded.

:

• Cognitive screens to determine

the presence of any difficulties with

concentration, attention, memory,

to ensure you are aware of road

This information is used todetermine whether equipment, carmodifications or specialist drivingtechniques need to be trialed duringthe on road component of thedriving assessment.

ON ROAD ASSESSMENT:

The on road assessment iscompleted in conjunction with aDriving School. Use of a dualcontrolled vehicle is necessary. If required, a vehicle with avariety of modifications can bearranged. Depending on yourlicensing needs, an automaticor manual vehicle with dualcontrols will be arranged for theassessment.

The ‘DOTS’ team is aware thatcompleting an assessment is astressful experience. We allowtime for you to become familiarwith the vehicle both whenstationary and when initiallydriving. The assessmentcommences in quieter streets, and progresses slowly to morecomplex situations.

The on road drivingassessment will be completedwith a Driving Instructor andDriver Trained OccupationalTherapist.

The Driving Instructor providesfeedback about your drivingperformance measured againstlicensing authority standards. The Occupational Therapistassesses limitations from yourmedical condition and identifiesstrategies to compensate forthese, to enable you to drivesafely and legally.

To ensure the assessment isobjective, assessments arecompleted over a standardroute. This will include:controlled and uncontrolledintersections, roundabouts,giveway/ stop signs, pedestriancrossings, single and multi-laneroads (with lane changes),shopping areas and schoolzones. When appropriate, feedback is provided during theassessment in order to giveyou the opportunity to improveyour driving performance.

The outcome of theassessment will be discussedfollowing the assessment andyou will be provided with aDriving Assessment OutcomeSummary. Where appropriate aDriver Rehabilitation Programis agreed upon. A report writtenby the Occupational Therapistis also sent to the licensingauthority and other recipientsas agreed upon.

The assessment takes around 3 hours to complete andconsists of an off road and on road component. The off roadcomponent is conducted by a Driver Trained OccupationalTherapist. The on road component iscompleted by the OccupationalTherapist and DrivingInstructor.
