ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS All of my academic work is heavily dependent on the love, acceptance, encouragement and support of all of my family. I am, in particular, heavily indebted to my mother, Christine Locke, whose interest in costuming and perspective on life certainly influenced the trajectory of the writing. However, I cannot go much further without expressing gratitude for the guidance of my thesis advisor, Dr. Linda J. Tomko, who is incredibly supportive, yet firm, fair, and precise. After her, of course, I would like to show appreciation for my other two committee members, Dr. Derek Burrill and Dr. Carole Fabricant. In addition, Many thanks go to Thomas Bracken, A.D.C.R.G., and Doireann Maoleidigh-Hoy, A.D.C.R.G., for being wonderful Irish dancing teachers. I would further like to thank Kirsten Hahn, Julian and Donna Gladysiewski, the Corcoran family, Terry Kelley, and Ashley Middleton, as well as many others in the Irish dancing community. I would also like to express thanks to dance educators Micah Kriston and Dr. Naomi Jackson. I would also like to thank all of my friends in Riverside, including all of the members and staff of KUCR-Riverside, 88.3 FM (David Brofman, Walter Douglas, Louis Vandenberg, Dee Taylor, Dimitri Niks, Ellie Gomez, Tina Yonas, Ryan Beal, Dexter Thomas, Tina Bold, Eliot Fong, Vanessa Mejia and Quyen Leao). I would also like to express thanks to my other pals from Riverside (Lasha Dalton, Justin Hewgill, David Choweller, Candace Wilson, Demi Espinoza, Joshua Hollowell, Chris Hollowell, Jeff Otter, Jay Conway) and elsewhere (Sean Reed, everyone from P.A.C., Brice Smith, and Joe Venables). iv

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

All of my academic work is heavily dependent on the love, acceptance,

encouragement and support of all of my family. I am, in particular, heavily indebted to

my mother, Christine Locke, whose interest in costuming and perspective on life

certainly influenced the trajectory of the writing.

However, I cannot go much further without expressing gratitude for the guidance

of my thesis advisor, Dr. Linda J. Tomko, who is incredibly supportive, yet firm, fair, and

precise. After her, of course, I would like to show appreciation for my other two

committee members, Dr. Derek Burrill and Dr. Carole Fabricant. In addition, Many

thanks go to Thomas Bracken, A.D.C.R.G., and Doireann Maoleidigh-Hoy, A.D.C.R.G.,

for being wonderful Irish dancing teachers. I would further like to thank Kirsten Hahn,

Julian and Donna Gladysiewski, the Corcoran family, Terry Kelley, and Ashley

Middleton, as well as many others in the Irish dancing community. I would also like to

express thanks to dance educators Micah Kriston and Dr. Naomi Jackson.

I would also like to thank all of my friends in Riverside, including all of the

members and staff of KUCR-Riverside, 88.3 FM (David Brofman, Walter Douglas,

Louis Vandenberg, Dee Taylor, Dimitri Niks, Ellie Gomez, Tina Yonas, Ryan Beal,

Dexter Thomas, Tina Bold, Eliot Fong, Vanessa Mejia and Quyen Leao). I would also

like to express thanks to my other pals from Riverside (Lasha Dalton, Justin Hewgill,

David Choweller, Candace Wilson, Demi Espinoza, Joshua Hollowell, Chris Hollowell,

Jeff Otter, Jay Conway) and elsewhere (Sean Reed, everyone from P.A.C., Brice Smith,

and Joe Venables).
