KEEPERS OF THE FIRE
CITIZEN POTAWATOMI NATION CULTURAL HERITAGE CENTER
14
The Neshnabek is the name of the confeder-
acy of peoples we know as the Ojibwe, Odawa and Bodewadmi (Potawatomi). They refer to themselves as the Three Fires Council. The roles within the Coun-cil are defined as: Ojibwe-Keepers of the Medicine and Faith, Odawa-Keepers of the Trade and Bodewadmi-Keepers of the Fire. Potawatomi are responsible for protecting and nurturing the council fire, for it is at the root of the culture. Today, they are called upon to re-kindle the flames of their past, lighting the path to the future.
The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural
Heritage Center features a Great Room with exhibits depicting lifeways and beliefs of pre-history and historical eras, a veterans room, a rotating display of family items donated to the Center, library and archive, video production room, gift shop and a classroom for instruction in beading, language, regalia-making, wood carving and women’s’ pow wow dance. Behind the Center is a historic home.

KEEPERS OF THE FIRE
16
The facility is a com-ponent of the vision
of Chairman John “Rocky” Barrett called FireLake Family Resort that will provide visitors an all-inclusive family experience featuring the Heritage Center, golf course, miniature golf, bowling alley, softball tournaments and other family destinations to augment tribal gaming and convention facilities.
The exhibits first take visitors to pre-history
and a dramatization of the Seven Fires Prophecy, a story that has been told over millennia and shapes Neshnabek life even today. It describes a time when they were visited by seven prophets. Each prophet spoke of a Fire, or era, that the people would have to face and endure.
Other exhibits depict life-ways from the distant
past to more modern times including shelter, clothing and food gathering and preparation. Currently in development are exhibits of a modern-era General Store, a Courtroom and a timeline of tribal history.

The Center’s core mis-sion is to be a resource
for tribal members. The library has a database and PDF copies of documents from the Center and major collections nationwide. The library has books, a collec-tion of maps and a Rare Book Room. An ongoing project enables tribal elders to make a video record of their own personal recollections. The Center also prepares presentations for meetings and leads field trips to cultural sites.
The prophet who delivered the message
of the 7th Fire revealed a time when a new people would emerge who would retrace the path of their elders, collecting what had been left behind. The new people would rekindle old embers and ignite the sacred fire of the Neshnabek.” Today we are in the 7th Fire, a revival of traditional culture, language and teachings. To fulfill this prophecy, the Potawatomi embrace the knowledge, experience and past of the Neshnabek. Through the work of the Center ensures their heri-tage will live on.
