Spiritual Vitality

From The Senior Warden Wallace Lightsey

Last month I wrote about some of the things that make Church of the Redeemer spiritually vital, noting the results of the survey we took this summer and how we scored on the “seven marks of congregational vitality” measured in the survey. It occurred to me later, however, that this topic raises a more fundamental question: What is spiritual vitality?

To me, spiritual vitality suggests life and energy. Vitality is the essence of a living thing. It entails growth, development, and change. If an organism or an organization is not growing, developing, and changing, then it’s either stagnant or dying – it’s not vital. In the context of a church congregation, this doesn’t necessarily mean numerical growth, but more that what is happening with and in the congregation is a journey toward a deeper relationship with God and an embracing of God’s mission in our community and the world.

Change is an integral part of being vital and alive. We have been forced to confront the necessity of change as our prior rector departed and we began the search for a new one. Change is an unavoidable aspect of being in transition. Even more significantly, when we learned last Spring of Father Scott’s decision to leave, our Vestry decided that we were not going to

simply tread water while we waited for a new rector to be called. God blessed us by leading Father Mark to be our interim priest, and I am thankful every day for all that he has brought to us both from the pulpit and from behind the scenes. But as we’ve gone through this year of transition, it has struck me that over-dependence on a rector, even a great rector, can be a trap leading to complacency and stagnation. Redeemer is a living being, and we are its lifeblood. Its health and vitality are ultimately up to all of us, with or without a rector. Hence, while we carried out our search, the Vestry wanted Redeemer to be growing, improving, getting better and stronger.

And it has. With the help of the Holy Spirit, many good things have been accomplished over the past six months. Some of these accomplishments required change, and change is not always easy and does not always have universal support. This was true of the decision to move to one Sunday service at 9:30am, but I think that turned out to be a great success.

The Vestry recently decided to rearrange the room assignments along the education wing in order to move the nursery to the other end of the hallway, at the top of the steps going up to the education wing from the sacristy. Certainly, arguments could be made for leaving the nursery where

it is, but the Vestry concluded that it would be better to have the nursery closer and more accessible to the main part of our building. This way the children are nearer to their parents, more visible, less isolated, more connected with the other teachers and children, and in a place with better lighting and security.

It’s a significant change, and the Vestry and I think it’s a good one, but more importantly, it’s a part of our ongoing effort to improve, to develop, to grow – to be vital and alive, not stagnant, not treading water.

We are now approaching Thanksgiving, I am very thankful to be a part of this great church family, one that is vital and alive, and I am excited about the growth opportunities that the future will bring us.

On Friday, October 26, we held our 2nd Annual Trunk Or Treat event. Even with the rain it was a HUGE success!! There were over 120 people here in costume to share a meal and trunk or treat fun. There was a spaghetti dinner, candy and even a magician!!! Thank you to Leslie Entwistle for organizing and running this wonderful night! Since other locations cancelled their events due to the rain, we had guests from all over who saw the event on line and brought their children here for

the fun!!! Join the fun next year

and bring your

decorated trunk!!

Our 2nd Annual ARCUM Family Movie Night on the lawn was held here at Redeemer on Friday, October 12.

It was a fun night to watch the “The Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown”. We had masks, games, face painting,

pizza, arts & crafts, and a double feature of Charlie Brown and Snoopy. There were friends from all of the ARCUM churches here for the festivities! This event is

becoming a great tradition that brings all of the local communities together. We look forward to next year

and hope everyone can join us!

ARCUM PUMPKIN PATCH

Primrose School visits the Pumpkin Patch

We want to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to everyone that helped with our Third Annual

A.R.C.U.M. Pumpkin Patch. There is no way we could possibly name everyone that gave their time and support. There were endless tasks that had to be done and so many hands that helped in countless ways like: collecting pallets, setting up the patch, unloading the truck, working the patch, throwing away smelly rotten pumpkins, opening and closing each day,

counting money, nightly deposits to the bank, and not to mention…buying pumpkins! The list really could go on and on. It was a lot of work but in the end, it was worth it all! It has been a pleasure and a blessing to be able to help three local organizations further their cause to

help those in need. As of this printing our sales have reached over $15,000. Thank you for spreading the word and buying pumpkins!!!

It is looking to be our best year yet! Thank you so much!

Have you seen the new signs on the property? The new flowers in the flower beds? The front roof fixed? Our Exteriors Committee is hard at work making Redeemer beautiful! Our campus has had a thorough interior cleaning, including the windows, during the months of September & October. The interiors committee has been hard at work cleaning out closets, cabinets and items no longer needed at Redeemer. Furniture has moved from room to room and our new nursery location is closer to the sanctuary, so our parents are closer to their children. Our storage room is moved to the last room in the hallway. This opens up another classroom in the education wing for Sunday events. Be patient with us as we are still working to spruce up many areas of the building. There is still much to do as we finish 2018 and look forward to great things in 2019!

FROM THE LOFT

Last month I wrote to you from Leon, France. This month, I am writing from Bad Kreuznach, Germany. This trip has not been very good and I have no pictures to share with you.

Christmas is coming very fast. Can I count on all the musicians in the church to help with the two special services?

Thanksgiving shows change this year. ARCUM is not planning a joint service this year. Other plans remain up in the air.

Many changes are in the works at Redeemer. The only way your leaders know if they are doing the correct thing is your feedback. If you like the changes, you need to let them know. If you don’t, the same. When was the last time you made a request or suggestion to your wardens? Help them out by letting them know how they are doing and giving them helpful suggestions.

Do you appreciate your choir? When was the last time you sent them a thank you note or climbed the steps to the loft to say “Hi!”? My mentor always said a mad choir sings the best, but I find the one that is thanked ever so often sings even better!

MARK YOUR CALENDARS On Sunday, November 18, 2018, we will hold a special congregational meeting for the purpose of electing new vestry members. This meeting will be held in the sanctuary following the 9:30 am service. Please plan to attend this all important meeting. The nominating committee has completed its work and the Vestry’s slate for our vestry follows:

Katie Broderick I was raised in the Presbyterian Church. My husband, Larry was raised in the Catholic Church. Our choice of compromise was to join the Episcopal Church in 1988. We have been members of Church of Redeemer since 2009. We love our church and have always felt at home here. I am a Sunday School teacher, on the Alter Guild

and I also serve on the acolyte team.

I graduated from college with a degree in recreational therapy in 1981. I was hired by GHS to work at Roger Peace Rehabilitation Hospital as a recreational therapist. My plan was to stay in Greenville for 2 years and then move closer to my parents in Western Maryland. However, I met Larry within 5 months of living here and that

plan flew right out the window. Larry and I have been married for 33 years. We have two daughters; Lauren and Amy. Lauren lives in Boston and is in her final year of medical residency at Harvard in psychiatry. She is happily engaged to a wonderful young man, Nikhil Shankar. Amy is in her final year of PT school at Mercer University in Atlanta Georgia. Amy wants to return to the Upstate to live. Her plan has an excellent chance of working since

Harry, her boyfriend of 7 years, is from Greenville and wants to live here, too.

After working as a recreational therapist for 16 years, I changed careers. I was hired by Christ Church to work at the preschool. I left that job to care for my mom, who was having a difficult time after the death of my father. Mom lived with us for several years and then transitioned to live at the Cascades for several more years until her

death in 2017. I returned to CCEP in 2014 and retired in 2018. I love to teach, to nurture, and be around people.

I am a caregiver. It is a great honor to be asked to serve on the Vestry at The Church of the Redeemer. Thank you for nominating me to serve.

William W. Heizer

I have been an active member of Redeemer since 1978 and had the privilege of serving on the Vestry five different times. During those years there have been several Rectors at Redeemer: Reverends Ed Keith, Phil Purser,

Richard Norman, Bob Horowitz and Scott Anderson. Each had a different personality, set of skills and particular interest. During the respective stays of each of the latter four, I was a member of the Vestry and was elected Senior Warden for one or more years. In addition, I have enjoyed the opportunity to serve on various Vestry

commissions and committees of the church over the years and have represented Redeemer at several Diocesan Conventions.

Having taken a break, I feel refreshed and ready to serve once again in a needed capacity at the church. My former career was in hospital administration (M.H.A, Duke University), so my appreciation and understanding of

the need for organization, teamwork, effective communications, follow-through and a sense of humor should stand me in good stead if elected to the Vestry.

The opportunity to join the vestry in working with the next Rector of Redeemer, whether male or female, is of real interest to me. If elected, I pledge to do my best. If not elected, I look forward to finding another niche at Redeemer in which to serve.

Dinah Johnson

I first came to The Church of the Redeemer in the 1990’s as the Christian Education Coordinator. Once my employment ended, my family stayed because the congregation has always been warm and

welcoming. Over the years I have served on a search committee, the Vestry, sung in the choir, led St. Margaret’s Guild, and currently chair the Greeters ministry. I look forward to serving the church as we prepare to welcome a new rector.

Rebekah Webb

My name is Rebekah Webb, and I am excited to be running for Vestry for the first time. I grew up in Greenville, and was baptized at The Church of the Redeemer and have been a member ever since. I was

active in Sunday School and Children’s Choir growing up, and served as an acolyte for many years. I participated regularly in EYC throughout middle school and high school and have many fond memories of diocesan retreats, city-wide ski trips, rafting trips, service projects, and Happening #25.

I also went on several diocese-sponsored summer mission trips while in high school. I am currently active in the choir and enjoy fellowship, good food and fun with the ladies in my FEAST group. I

attended Winthrop University, and have worked at Southern First Bank for 14 years, with about a year and a half in my current position as Compliance Analyst. My son Elliott turned 18 in June; he graduated from Wade Hampton High this year and was active in Redeemer’s EYC in both middle and high school.

I look forward to faithfully serving the church and congregation if elected. Thank you!

Special Meeting of the Congregation - November 18 There will be a special meeting of the congregation in the church sanctuary on November 18, immediately following the 9:30 service, for the purpose of electing new Vestry members. As prescribed by our church Bylaws, the Vestry has nominated the following persons, all of whom have agreed to serve if elected:

Katie Broderick Bill Heizer Dinah Johnson Rebekah Webb

Nominations may also be made from the floor at the meeting. Any adult communicant whose name is enrolled in the church register, and who is a pledging member, is entitled to vote and is eligible to serve on the Vestry. Because the Bylaws require publication of all nominations for 14 (fourteen) days before the election, if there are any nominations from the floor, the election will have to be postponed 14 (fourteen) days. Please make every effort to attend this important meeting if you can.

Fifty years ago most individual Americans at least

knew of a local pastor, parish priest, rabbi or some

other personal spiritual leader affiliated with their

family and local neighborhood. But now, as the

need for such a relationship has greatly increased

due to the fast paced complexity of life, the

ever-increasing number of unchurched folks has

greatly reduced the number and availability of

local pastors. Many people crave the spiritual care

and nurture they once received from and in their

personal relationships with local clergy.

Public personalities sense a hunger for such care

on the part of the masses, and for various reasons

and motivations they try to fill the gap. The recent

popularity of the radio or television talk show

format and its resulting celebrity personalities

attests to the fact that people are searching for

spiritual leadership. Not too long ago the very

idea that someone would sit and listen to a

politically oriented commentator carry on for

hours would have been considered nothing less

than absurd. Now the commentators have learned

to speak to the very soul of the listener and

spiritually hungry folks tune in to find meaning for

their lives in a world that has blurred the lines

between entertainment, news, politics and religion.

Public communicators strive to

become surrogate spiritual gurus

proclaiming the wisdom of that

higher truth. Some have sensed

the power inherent in spiritual

leadership, and have tried to

cash in on the void left by the

disappearance of legitimate

in-community clergy persons. Still others have

naively done so without even realizing it.

Whether with ulterior motives or with the best of

unselfish intentions, they have assumed the

mantle of shepherd or pastor and such is a status

and function they can never adequately fulfill.

Pastoral care cannot be electronically mass

produced.

Mass communication and broadcast entertainment

is one directional. One-directional relationships

are not relationships as love does not travel on a

one-way street. A pastor’s love for his or her

congregation is returned just as we return God’s

love for us back to God. Any assertion of a

one-directional love relationship presents only a

façade and the illusion of relationship enhanced

by convenient access

We have a vibrant community of believers here at Redeemer all because of the great work that our volunteers do. This month we have some volunteer opportunities available:

Flower Guild—once time per month commitment. As a volunteer you are responsible for getting the flowers and setting them up in the church. (contact: Lauren McCullough)

Echoes Editor -This volunteer or team of volunteers will collect and organize articles, information, and photos in an established format. Uses Microsoft Publisher and Word. Training is available. (contact: Sue Bannio)

Office Angels—Would you like to help in the church office with various projects that need to be completed? If so, contact Sue at the Parish Office to help.

Volunteer Opportunities

Join us on Sundays in November after service to listen to and question our neighbors who work with our Pumpkin Patch Charities ~ Mother Teresa House, Samaritan House, and Pleasant Valley Connection. The talks will help guide the church in its outreach mission decisions as we learn about these charities and who they reach with their efforts.

Nov. 4 Marianne & Richard Stoddard from Mother Teresa House

Nov. 11 Steve Fior & client volunteers from Samaritan House

Nov. 18 Speaker from Pleasant Valley Connection

Adult Sunday school just completed a four week program of presentations and discussions about how to fulfill Christ’s call to us to help the poor through charity. The study was to help us plan in how we want to use The Church of the Redeemer’s resources of money, time, and talent.

Be part of the process and honor those helping others in our community by attending these

sessions. We will meet November 4, 11, & 18

after the 9:30am service. For more details or questions please contact Rick Hankinson: 864-569-2615.

Knitting to the Ukraine

I was told that the box of knitting arrived and today - I unpacked it and was filled with joy in my heart that God brought together fellow brothers and sisters in Christ to provide warmth for the Roma people. The items are beautiful and show a labor of love from all that

participated. Soon I will start to divide the items up and then contact the Roma pastors in each camp to distribute them to the most needy. This will take a little time as I have to involve the churches in each camp. I will let you know the details of distribution and their response.

I know that COR had help

from other churches, people or

groups in the area. Please

thank them all for me.

It has gotten in the mid 30's during the night here and winter will soon be upon us. It is not just the knitted items, but most importantly that people and the body of Christ cares and loves them in another part of the world. Please share this email with the knitting group. God's blessings. His,

Flowers on the altar are more than just an adornment for the front of our sanctuary. It is an historical tradition to show our thanks and

humility to the Lord. It is a symbol of recognition of His Glory.

Dedicating the offering in the name of someone is a great honor.

Our 2018 Altar dedication book is on the communication table for special

dedications to be made. Special requests for flower type, color or arrangement style can be noted.

Dedications are only $35, but the awe of honoring his Glory cannot be measured

Do you have someone on “Prayers of the People” list that is not a member of our

church? Would you like for this person to know that Redeemer is praying for them each week?

If so, please provide me with the address of person and I will send them a hand written note, from The Church of the Redeemer, letting them

know they are in our thoughts and prayers.

Since the single 9:30am combined service has been so well received, the Vestry has decided to continue having one service at 9:30am on Sundays until we have a new rector. Sunday School follows the service, from 10:45am to 11:45am.

Sunday Service Time

Finance Committee The Finance Committee meets on the 2nd

Tuesday of the month. Please note this on your calendar.

Our search committee met with Rev. D’Rue Hazel to receive the names of eligible candidates for the rector position on Sunday, October 21. Interviews started on October 25. As candidates are selected the committee will then travel to their location to see them in action in their current roles. Stay tuned for more information. We are getting closer! This is an exciting time for Redeemer.

ONLINE CALENDAR

Redeemer now has an online calendar so you can keep up to date with all the comings and goings here at the church. The calendar is linked to the weekly email. To add your name to our email distribution please email or call the parish office.

Redeemer’s Raccoon Friend

On Wednesday, Oct. 24 we had a new friend visit at Redeemer. We have named him as “Rocky” because of the way he knocked out the flower room. You may have heard about his evening at Redeemer. He emptied some trash, had some candy in the Christian Ed. Office. Prayed over our friends in the Garth, and took out the flower room as he tried to get out. He was safely released through the playground door at 10:30am.

He was found by Jack Blackburn at the end of the education hall just hanging out. Thank you to Jack for helping him find his way out of the building safely.
