Excellence – We always give of our best “Ephesians 6:7 – “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the LORD, not men, because you know that the LORD will reward anyone for whatever good he does, whether he is slave or free.”

10 May 2018

Dear Hillview Community

The Bible exhorts us to give our best in everything, as unto the Lord. Ecclesiastes 9:10: Whatever the activity in which you engage, do it with all your ability. Colossians 3:23-24: Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:17: And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Excellence is often seen as that which is achieved by only the top 5% - the talented few who may come first in a race or achieve the top mark in Maths. However we understand that

excellence is about giving our best effort, and achieving our personal best which is not necessarily based on ability. It is better to try our best with effort and make a mistake than not try at all, and that we take risks, rather than stay in our comfort zone and not grow. My class (Year 4) have come up with ideas as to how they have shown excellence in different situations they have encountered: “I gave my best at Rugby Fun Day by passing the ball, helping and encouraging my team, and listening to the referee.” William Thorpe “When I am doing a test that is hard I give it my best go.” Eden Jamieson “Last year in ICAS I was very scared since it was my first time. But when I did it I did my best by reading the questions over and over, also by concentrating and not worrying about the time limit.” Benjamin Blaikie “At Rugby Fun Day I showed excellence by helping someone up when they got knocked down and good behaviour by being respectful to the coach and referee.” Jaxon Waddell “When I learnt to ride a motorbike and I fell, I got up and kept trying.” Preston Botherway “In the classroom I show excellence by listening to the teacher and trying my best.” Sacha Burgess “In the Cross Country champs I will practise very hard and do my best.” Cameron Fairhall Let us encourage one other that in any circumstance we give our best even if it is difficult, and the situation is very challenging because when we show excellence it gives glory to God. May God bless you. Margaret Learey Head of Junior Campus

Year 3-6: Christian Living [by Steve Frost]

Children LOVE a good story! I am no different. One of the greatest influences on my life was “the passing on faith” from my parents and grandparents. There were countless occasions when stories were shared about the way God had been at work in their lives. They would share during picnics, fishing trips, game times, forest walks and car trips. Their stories usually related to a life experience I was facing or

would be connected to what we were doing at the time. With eagerness we would listen to them passionately speak about how they overcame worry, mended broken friendships, or stood up for what was right. Every story would powerfully reinforce how God had equipped, empowered, and enabled them to face a new day. Having being exposed to this on a regular basis, I began to question…”If God can do this for my parents, then maybe….just maybe…. He can do this for me?” It was just what was needed to ignite my own journey of faith. Don’t underestimate the power of a life story!
