The Scripts

Narrator : It was summer time. The field lay like a wide sea. There was a

scarecrow in the middle of the field, flapping like the sail on a

ship. He was called Tattercoats because he wore a torn shirt, a

frayed coat and a battered straw hat.

One Sunday afternoon….

Emily and Katherine: Tattercoats! Tattercoats! We’re here…!!

Emily : I collected these beautiful feathers for you. I found them form

my father’s chicken coop. They look so beautiful, don’t they?

(stuck the feather on his hat)

Katherine : I bought you a scarf and a pair of gloves. I knew they would

suit you. Emily, could you please help me?

(dress it with scarf and gloves)

Wow! Look at you, Tattercoats. You are the best-dressed

scarecrow on this farm. You look so charming!!

(The children singing joyfully while moving around the

scarecrow)

Katherine and Emily: Here we go around the Tattercoats, the Tattercoats, the

Tattercoats,

Here we go around the Tattercoats,

Early in the morning…

Here we jump around the Tattercoats, the Tattercoats,

the Tattercoats,

Here we jump around the Tattercoats,

Early in the morning…

Here we laugh around the Tattercoats, the Tattercoats,

the Tattercoats,

Here we laugh around the Tattercoats,

Early in the morning…

Emily : Oh! It’s getting dark now. We have to go home.

Katherine : Oh! Tattercoats! It is sad to see you standing here alone. I

wish I could stay with you..but I am sorry Tattercoats. Mum

and Dad will worried about me. I have to go now.

Goodbye Tattercoats!

Emily : Don’t be sad, Kathy! We will come again tomorrow….and

you, Tattercoats, stands still until we meet you next morning.

Bye..Tattercoats!

Narrator : On the next day, Tottercoats waited for the children to come,

but he didn’t see anyone or even heard the children’s voices.

Tottercoats waited and waited until it was weeks passed and

they still did not come. He felt very sad. Suddenly, a hare

came…

The Hare : Hello Mr. Tattercoats! Why you look so glum?

Tattercoats : I’m lonely. I want to see the children. I haven’t seen them for

many days.

Page 3: Drama Script on Mr Tattercoats

The Hare : Easy! You just ran across the field and look in the window.

You can see them clearly. Come on, race over there with me,

right now!

Tattercoats : How can I run? Can’t you see I only have one leg?

(yelling angrily to show his anger)

The Hare : Ha! Ha! Ha! That’s not my problem, Tattercoats! Ha! Ha! Ha!

This is the way I hop, hop, hop, I hop, hop, hop, I hop, hop,

hop.

This is the way I hop, hop, hop,

You are silly scarecrow!

(laughing while hopping away)

Tattercoats : Oh no…I’m alone again….Nobody wants to be my friend.

Narrator : Days by days, weeks by weeks and today is the first snow fell,

covering the fields and hedges, the scarecrow’s stiff arms and

the top of his battered hat. A robin hopped close by and said.

The Robin : Breadcrumbs! Breadcrumbs! I have breadcrumbs. The children

give me these breadcrumbs.

(as he flapping around the scarecrow)

Tattercoats : Oh, have you seen the children?

The Robin : Yes, indeed! I often sit on the window and peek inside. The

children seemed to be very happy. They are decorating a tree

with such beautiful and colourful flowers. In the evening, the

leaves light up like fireflies!

Tattercoats : That’s not true! You are trying to bluff me! You’re a liar!

Page 4: Drama Script on Mr Tattercoats

The Robin : It is! It is! Fly over there and see for yourself!

Tattercoats : I can’t fly, you stupid bird! I can’t even walk. I’ve only got

one leg!

The Robin : I’m telling you the truth. It’s up to you to believe or not! See

you, Tattercoats!

(The Robin flapping its wings while singing a song)

It’s up to you to belief or not, to belief or not, to belief or

not,

It’s up to you to belief or not,

Oh! A pity Tattercoats….

Goodbye, Tattercoats!!

(as he flies away leaving the scarecrow alone)

Tattercoats : No one wants me anymore. The children don’t come to play.

The farmer didn’t need me. They even did not want to talk to

me again. I am really a pathetic scarecrow!!

Narrator : A month passed and spring arrived. The trees turned green and

the flowers started to bloom. Tattercoats could not stand up

straight because the vine held him down. The vine became

longer and stronger every day. It pulled his scarf away and

wound around his arms. He could not wave at the crows

anymore, so they were no longer afraid of him.

Tattercoats : Oh no…!! The farmer must be disappointed on me. I couldn’t

guard the fields anymore. The crows are no longer afraid of

me. I’m a useless scarecrow!!

(Mr. Swallow flies in, fluttering around him)

Tattercoats : Hi, Mr. Swallow! What are you doing here?

Page 5: Drama Script on Mr Tattercoats

The Swallow : Oh! Hi, Mr. Tattercoats, but I’m sorry. I have no time! I’m

busy building my nest under the farmer’s kitchen. The children

are waiting. They love to watch me.

Tattercoats : Oh, Mr Swallow! You’re very lucky! I want to see them too.

But I couldn’t. I miss them very much.

The Swallow : I felt pity on you, Mr. Tattercoats. But don’t worry. I’ll come

to see you every day to tell you about the children.

(The swallow fluttering around while singing a song)

Don’t be worry oh my dear friend, my dear friend, my dear

friend,

Don’t be worry oh my dear friend,

I’ll help you…

I’ll visit you every day, every day, every day,

I’ll visit you every day,

To bring the news…

Narrator : Mr. Swallow and Tattercoats became good friends. Almost

everday Mr. Swallow will fly to meet Tattercoats while

bringing some news about the children. And one day…

The Swallow : Tattercoats! Tattercoats! They baby has arrived. He sleeps

under the apple tree. Any day now, my babies will be here

too!!

Tattercoats : Now the children will never come to play with me anymore.

Narrator : Tattercoats keeled right over and sank into wild flowers. He

laid on the ground for many days until one day, a shadow

crossed his face.

Emily : Kathy! Do you see Tattercoats? I can’t see him! Oh! No.

Page 6: Drama Script on Mr Tattercoats

Look! It’s Tattercoats. His body was covered with the vine and

wild flowers.

Kathy, hurry up! Help me to get him up!

Katherine : Oh, pity you, Tattercoats. What happened to you? Why you

look so pathetic?

Just look at you, Tattercoats. All your clothes were gone!

Emily : You’re the best scarecrow ever! You can look after the field

even you could not wave at the crows anymore.

Katherine : You deserve to get new clothes, Mr. Tattercoats! Emily, let’s

bring him home.

Emily and Katherine: (Dressed the Tattercoats up while singing a song)

This is the way we dressed Tattercoats, we dressed Tattercoats,

we dressed Tattercoats,

This is the way we dressed Tattercoats,

With new clothes.

Narrator : The children dressed Tattercoats in new clothes. They stood

him up, tall and straight near the herbs and vegetables farm.

Tattercoats’ heart grew with blooms. He was no longer lonely.

Tattercoats stands still next to the children’s house. He will

spend his entire life to guard the farm forever and ever.

Tattercoats : (Showing a happy smile while singing a song)

I am happy to guard the farm, to guard the farm, to guard

the farm.

I am happy to guard the farm,

All day long…

I am happy to see the kids, to see the kids, to see the kids,

I am happy to see the kids,

All day long…
