My parents gave me the name Levi Philo after my Grandpa Levitus. He was a great soldier. My hair is brown, thin, and short. I am ten years old. My home is a small log cabin. It has a dining room and three small bedrooms as well as a fire place. There is a wooden barn and a field where we grow corn and beans. We also have a big lawn where my brothers and sisters play with our dog.

My clothes are brown and I have to wear long white socks that go above my knees. The white socks are uncomfortable to wear during the summer. I always wear a black or brown hat. When it is cold outside I wear my brown coat.

My father’s works as a farmer. He plants carrots, broccoli, and blueberries. I love when we have carrots and broccoli for supper it is so good. After Father finishes his supper and it is not dark outside he goes to the field to plant more crops.

My family always play games during the evenings. My favorite game is hide and seek. I also enjoy playing marbles. We play marbles when it rains. I am the best player when we play hide and seek. My brothers and sisters do not like to play hide and seek with me anymore.

If I misbehave my dad would take me to the barn and get a tree limb and spank me. The next morning when I wake up I wouldn't get breakfast or lunch but than I would say sorry and then my mother and father would say sorry for spanking me.

When I was sick my mom would find a special tree and dig up the roots and then ground it up then put it in my water and give it to me. T Then I would go to sleep and be healthy the next morning.

Colonial laws wanted all citizens of the settlement to keep social order. There was no professional police force. Ordinary citizens generally volunteered to enforce orderly conduct. Colonists, particularly those in the Puritan settlements of New England, considered sin as crime and crime as sin. Since the criminal justice system was a part of the existing religious order of the community, all offenses were against God and society. Laws in the Puritan regions were filled with religious messages.

When people broke the law in colonial Virginia, the courts ordered swift and often public punishments. Unlike today, jails were used as places to hold people accused of crimes until they were brought to trial. They were not used as places for punishment.
