Yun was born in Seoul, South Korea, a descendant of a clan of Yuns dating back 500 years to a small village in rural South Korea. He attended St. Albans School, a private all-boys school in Washington DC, and went on to study at Harvard College where he obtained a BA in Biology in 1992. He obtained his MD from Duke University School of Medicine in 1994 and completed a fellowship and residency in Radiology from Stanford University School of Medicine in 2000. After his residency, he served on the clinical faculty at Stanford University School of Medicine from 2000-2006.CareerWhile Yun was completing his fellowship and residency in Radiology and subsequently serving on the clinical staff at Stanford University School of Medicine, he began his career as a healthcare analyst in 1998 at Palo Alto Investors, LLC a hedge fund based in Palo Alto, CA with $1 billion assets under management invested in healthcare. Palo Alto Investors was founded in 1989 by William Edwards,[1] the son of renown venture capitalist Bill Edwards, one of the original Silicon Valley venture capitalists.[2] He has been responsible for healthcare investments for Palo Alto Investors since 1998 and in 2012 was elected President of the firm in 2008.[3]

Joon has served on several corporate and non-profit boards, and has published dozens of patents, scientific articles, business essays and books.[4] He is a contributor to Forbes,[5] the health editor for Evolution magazine,[6] and a speaker and commentator on Bloomberg,[7] the SALT conference, George Soros Institute for New Economic Thinking,[8] and numerous other media outlets and conferences.[9]PhilanthropyOn September 9, 2014, Yun announced the launch of the $1 million Palo Alto Longevity Prize, an incentive prize to encourage teams from all over the world to compete in an all-out effort to hack the code that regulates our health and lifespan. In 2005, Yun co-founded the Palo Alto Institute, a nonprofit foundation dedicated to transforming lives by changing the way people think through conducting original researching and educating the public through conferences, events, media and publications.
