Associate Attorney General Tony West visited West Prep School on July 18, 2014 to speak

with 300 young people of color for a summer success workshop

• Third-grade literacy: “Each One, Read One” initiative

• Community outreach and after-school mentoring to all students

• Community/Student events and listening sessions

CULTURAL COMPETENCY TRAINING

Mandatory professional development for all school-based administrators and all new teach-

• 14 CCSD schools will focus on cultural competency training/walks

• Cultural competency goals in school performance plans

• Monthly cultural/diversity professional development offered to all staff

• Between $6,000 and $35,000 in grant money awarded

• 71 middle and high schools

HOPE² BEHAVIOR MODIFICATION GRANTS

• Grants will fund positive behavior programs or on-site behavior programs to avoid placement in behavior schools

• Some high schools have already seen progress with on-site behavior programs such as Schools Targeting Alternative Reform On-Site (STAROn) program

• Pre-kindergarten for all students

• Full-day kindergarten for all students (21 to 1 Ratio)

• Zoom Reading Centers to provide additional literacy support

• Extended school year of 17 additional days

Initial results of Zoom Schools:

• Dramatic improvements in language and literacy in pre-k

• More than 70 percent of kindergarten students per-formed at grade

level in all but one category of assessment of literacy skills

• K-2 students below grade level in December 2013 were on average

at or above grade level by May 2014
