Mystic Chords of Memory: Abraham Lincoln’s First Inaugural Address
President’s Message
Membership is our #1 Goal.
In any particular year, the Club looses around 10% of it’s membership because of resignations. This
is not unlike any other Rotary Club and this year was not unlike any other year. What this means is
that to bring us even to where we started we need to bring in 45 new dues paying members. To
date, we have brought in about 30 new members and we are more than half way through the year.
Therefore we need at least 30 more new members. We cannot be a Bigger-Better-Bolder Club with-
out members . . . the life blood of LA5. If everyone brings in at least one new member, we would far
exceed our goal. Please bring in your friends, business associates, church members, neighbors
and those who you know need Rotary in their lives. Thank you to the members who have spon-
sored members so far this year!
Attendance.
Over the years our Club has held level at about 24%. That is about where we are so far this year.
Members attend for any number of reasons. Fellowship seems to be the main reason, followed by
the speaker and then to network. The meal cost may be a factor, but with the non-dinner option
our members are provided with a good combination of reasons to attend meetings.
Fundraising.
So far we are at about 38% of our Community Service Fund goal and at 25% of our Rotary Founda-
tion goal. You should have received a letter from the Fundraising Division Directors and me in late
October asking for your contributions and pledges. With that letter was a listing of the many Com-
munity and International Service projects our Club supports. It is your donations that make our ser-
vice project possible. Please send in your donation or make a pledge.
The first ever Casino Night is on March 12th. The funds raised from this event will go into the
Community Service Fund, so the money you win (or loose) will go into the Community Service Fund.
This will be a great event for friends, family, with lots of fellowship and FUN!
Thanks for supporting your Rotary Club!

Opening Remarks of Paul Harris
1911 Rotary International Convention
“This National work impresses me as being a tre-
mendous project, and I believe we are being
awakened as to what the National Association
means.
“It has been difficult to get members to take a
broad national view of Rotary. There have been
many who have been disposed to see the entire
national project through the vision of their own
Club, and measure its scope by the limitations of
a local Club.
“However, it will only take a Convention or two of
the character of this Convention to make all natu-
rally good Rotarians National Rotarians.”

Membership Service Recognition
President Gerry will launch a new Membership Service Recognition program this Friday, February 25
at the California Club.
Those Rotarians who have been active members of LA5 for at least five years (but less than ten) will
receive a special Rotary pin they can proudly wear. Congratulations to the following members!
Christina Chanpong: the most wonderful Club Secretary in
Rotary history.
Last week’s speaker, The Honorable Eric Garcetti,
celebrates receiving his Paul Harris award.
Rotarian/Club Photographer Tony Medley with
Nicole Nadel. Thanks for all your great photos,
Tony. President Gerry visits with some seasoned Rotarians. Is that
an aura that emanates from the group, or just the glare from
the top of their heads?
Past President Mike Birkholm and Denise
Anthony: connected through LA5.
Rotary is all about networking.
