Brief Description of Undergraduate Courses Taught: (Course Title – Code: Description)

Description: Introduction to Modern English Literature- ENGL 415N The course provides in depth study of genres and individual authors of twentieth and twenty-first century Modern English literature. This course has been taught with focus on varied approaches (theoretical and practical) to literary study. A broad spectrum of modern, postmodern and post-colonial theories and techniques is discussed. The major luminaries and their prominent works in poetry, Drama, Novel and short stories relating to the schools and techniques studied in the literary background are taught in a detailed manner. Two novels, two short stories, three poems, and one drama by the following writers are studied: T. S. Eliot, D.H. Lawrence, Dylan Thomas, Wole Soyinka, Chinua Achebe, W.S. Maugham, Muriel Spark and John Osborne. Introduction to American Literature - ENGL 416N This is an elective course. It offers an introductory survey concentrating on major writers, works, trends and genres. The course examines the major literary movements – Enlightenment or The Age of Reason, Romanticism, Transcendentalism, Realism, Naturalism, Modernism, Post – Modernism. The course presents a selection of literary texts written by the outstanding literary figures of American Literature. It analyzes the techniques used by the major authors/poets, thereby providing opportunities for progression to further study in the area of literary studies. One novel, one drama, a selection of poems and short fiction by the following writers are studied: Miller, Hawthorne, Melville, Dickinson, Whitman, Twain, Frost, O’ Neill, and Hemingway. Romantic Poetry ENGL 325N The course starts with an introduction to the romantic poetry of the Nineteenth century from theoretical, aesthetic, and historical perspectives. Critical approaches to poetry and poetic techniques are detailed. Poems are evaluated through a comprehensive understanding of the Romantic ideology and criticism. 2-3 poems from each poet are included for study. The major romantic poets include Wordsworth, Coleridge, Blake, Charlotte Smith, Shelley, Keats, and Byron. Victorian Novel ENGL 316N A study of the Victorian Novel will begin with a socio-historical background of the Victorian era. It will also examine political and ideological background of the age. Texts are interpreted based on an understanding of the elements of literature and literary features such as authors’ style, characterization, plot, themes, symbols, and techniques. Along with the introduction to this Age, an emphasis will be placed on the analytical and critical appreciation of the major novelists in general and three major novelists and their novels in particular. English Literature of 17th&18th century -ENGL 226N investigated germane contexts (literary, social & cultural) to view English literature in the larger context of British culture and European literature – of an author’s relationship with the writers preceding him and with those being influenced by him. A brief survey of literary trends in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with emphasis on the major events on order and reason,

social classes, values and beliefs and a general idea about the literature of both centuries is analysed. Reference to the major poets of the period like Milton, Pope, and Dryden are also discussed. One prose work, one early seventeenth century drama, one novel belonging to the eighteenth century, and two metaphysical poems are taught: Writers include Shakespeare, Bacon, John Donne, John Milton, Samuel Richardson. Introduction to Literature- ENGL 241NR This is an introductory course which is given to acquaint students with the three major genres of English Literature: Poetry, Drama and Prose. The course starts with definitions of the genres, elements of literature and detailed study of two short stories, two one-act plays together with a selection of poems representative of the genre. In addition, a short history of the periods of English literature and the major authors and their works is introduced. The course prepares students for the study of the literary terminology of the different genres to be used in higher levels. Writing 2- ENGL 312 NR It is the second course that deals with the writing skills. It focuses on teaching students’ skills of writing a short essay of two and three paragraphs. It covers different types of writing such as spatial, chronological, hypothetical and expository. The last includes development by description, analysis, definition, cause and effect, argument, and comparison and contrast. In addition, it develops the skills of outlining and summarization. Writing 1- ENGL 213 This is the first course that deals with writing skills. The course focuses on introducing the skills of writing grammatically correct and meaningful sentences. This course will enable students to organize and link ideas logically and effectively in writing. In addition, they will be trained on using the sentence patterns and conventions of standard English in their writing with the degree of accuracy required for academic writing. Listening & Speaking 1 - ENGL211 In addition to other Language courses,this course was taught at Jazan University. It deals with long passages as dialogues and conversations in addition to academic lectures at the intermediate level. Listening activities include spoken texts, taking notes, and presenting them in a good comprehensible output. The course helps in understanding & using conversational English in many daily life situations. It contains selected activities of listening to a spoken text with the purpose of being able to discuss, defend certain opinions, or give oral presentations on the topic covered in the listening material. General English- GE 101N This course is a fully integrated academic course covering the language skills. It is built upon a framework of concepts that helps students become proficient in English and prepared for the academic and social challenges in college and beyond. Basic grammatical structures are presented along with other fundamental skills and strategies.

Description: The following courses were taught in India: New Literatures (Other Than Indian) - S3/14 The course surveys a range of topics that include: Colonial Encounters, Postcolonial discourse, nationalism, ethnicity, nativism, race and gender, Hybridity; history, language and landscape in Canada and Australia ; language in colonies, immigration, multiculturalism, Africa’s symbolic importance, African literature in English; The Aboriginals, Australian Literary Imagination; The political and social backgrounds of Canadian Literature, and Canadian feminism. Texts covered under this course range from poetry, novels, and dramas in a detailed manner. The works of writers like A.D. Hope, Achebe, Naipaul, Margaret Laurence, Patrick White, Soyinka, Senghor, and Stewart are covered. American Literature I- S3/12 This course outlines and features the major movements in American history beginning with Puritanism, Transcendentalism, Romanticism, the rise of the American novel, American realism, naturalism, expressionism, the American dream, and regionalism. It covers almost all the major American writers’ writings in novels, essays, drama and poetry: Whitman, Dickinson, Poe, O’ Neill, Emerson, Twain, Hawthorne, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Steinbeck. British Drama 1- S1/03 This course highlights the literary trends, movements and texts in the periods beginning with the Renaissance, the Elizabethan theatre, Rise of the Drama, Humanism, University Wits, Romantic Comedy, Revenge Tragedy, Satirical Comedy, Tragic-Comedy, Restoration Drama, and Sentimental Comedy of Humours. Major dramatists include: Shakespeare (3 plays), Marlowe, Kyd, Congreve, Ben Jonson, Webster and Sheridan.
