Page 3: DP Evaluation and Reporting Practices: What to Expect Next ... · ^The unexamined life is not worth living _ Socrates •TOK is about examination of the world around us and how we

Similarities between the two programs/two diplomas

• Students benefit from richness of two curricula: International Baccalaureate and Ontario Secondary School Diploma are very similar in content and rigor.

• Many shared philosophies and approaches to learning in IB and OSSD (e.g. ATL/Growing Success)

• Students apply to post-secondary institutions with two strong credentials; broadens their options around the world

• IB stresses value of liberal arts education and international perspective; OSSD offers additional flexibility in terms of individual interests

TOK and the Extended Essay: Points Towards the Diploma

• A student, for example, writes a satisfactory extended essay and whose performance in Theory of Knowledge is judged to be good will be awarded 1 point, while a student who writes a mediocre extended essay and whose performance in Theory of Knowledge is judged to be excellent will be awarded 2 points.

• Performance in both Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay of an elementary standard is a failing condition for the award of the diploma.

The Nature of CAS

“You don’t study CAS, you DO CAS.”

CAS is at the heart of the Diploma Programme. With its holistic approach, CAS is designed to strengthen and extend students’ personal and interpersonal learning from the Pre-IB program.

CAS is organized around the three strands of creativity, activity and service defined as follows.

• Creativity— exploring and ex tending ideas leading to an original or interpretive product or performance

• Activity—physical exertion contributing to a healthy lifestyle

• Service—collaborative and reciprocal engagement with the community in response to an authentic need

Why is the Extended Essay good for Students?

• The answer is simple – students get to apply the Approaches to Learning skill sets that they learned in their Pre-IB classes to a topic of their choice. They include creativity, critical thinking, time management, research, organization and collaboration and communication.

• Its purpose is to acquaint students with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected by universities.

• Emphasis is placed on the process of engaging in personal research, on the communication of ideas and information in a logical and coherentmanner, and on the overall presentation of the extended essay in compliance with the Extended Essay guidelines.

Table of Equivalents: Equating the IB Grade (1-7) to an Ontario Mark

The purpose of this table is to equate the achievement of IB students in their DP subjects to their expected achievement in equivalent OSSD courses. Their IB scores are converted into a mark out of 100% and reported on all Ontario report cards. It is these report card marks, primarily, that universities will use to determine acceptance. This table is not meant to advantage nor disadvantage IB students in terms of grades – it is meant to put them on an equal playing field.

Assessments in the DP: An Overview

School Based Assessments: These assessments are used by teachers at Erindale SS to indicate how well a student is doing in a particular subject. These may replicate IBO style assessments or may be of an alternate nature. These school based assessments will help teachers formulate a predicted mark in April of the student’s subject examination.

Internal and External Assessments: All IB courses have Internal Assessment Components (IAs) as well as External Assessments (EAs). They are both set according to the IBO guidelines and standards, and count towards the final IB subject grade. Each subject has a different weighting for IAs and EAs. This weighting can be found in the subject syllabus documents

Page 26: DP Evaluation and Reporting Practices: What to Expect Next ... · ^The unexamined life is not worth living _ Socrates •TOK is about examination of the world around us and how we

School Based Assessments in the DP

School based assessment is used by teachers to indicate how well the student is progressing in the subject. These may replicate IBO style assessments (for example tests and research assignments) or may be of an alternate nature (for example reflection diaries, labs, field studies). School based assessment is required to assist teachers to support students as they develop their competency, as formulate a predicted mark:

• School based assessment is not optional. All Diploma candidates must undertake and complete all requirements for the course.

• Students are expected to attend all classes in which they are enrolled unless for appropriate medical reasons or unless they have prior permission. Students regularly missing class severely affect their chance of gaining the IB Diploma.

• Appropriate medical documentation will be required for students missing school based assessments and deadlines.

• Technical difficulties or other foreseeable issues such as vacations, school or athletic commitments are not acceptable excuses for missing deadlines.

• Failing to meet school based assessment requirements may severely affect students’ chances of gaining the IB Diploma.

Page 27: DP Evaluation and Reporting Practices: What to Expect Next ... · ^The unexamined life is not worth living _ Socrates •TOK is about examination of the world around us and how we

Internal and External AssessmentsInternal Assessments (IA) 20%-25% External Assessments (EA) 75%-80%

• Internal Assessments (IA’s) are set according to subject and IBO guidelines and count towards the final subject grade.

• Student performance is measured in relation to all the objectives for that subject. (criterion based)

• Internal Assessments requirements are completed by students within the school allocated deadlines

• The subject teacher grades or evaluates the Internal Assessment work, however a sample of students’ work is sent to an IBO moderator and checked against world marking standards. The teacher’s marks are then adjusted if required.

• It is used to evaluate student achievement against those objectives that do not lend themselves to external written examination or tests. (Practical application of skills and curriculum—labs, field studies, experiments)

• External Assessments (EA’s) are set according to subject and IBO guidelines and count towards the final subject grade.

• Student performance is measured in relation to all the objectives for that subject. (criterion based)

• EA’s are set and marked by IBO examiners.

What is a Predicted Mark?

In April teachers are required to submit a Predicted Grade (PG) to the IBO for any students who are writing an exam in May. The PG is a predicted mark that the student will achieve in the course. Teachers arrive at this mark using:

• School based assessments• Internal Assessment mark• Mock Exams (March of Grade 11/12)

Teachers will need to refer to the subject specific grade descriptors for each subject to ensure that the predicted grade reflects the standards of the IBO.

The Benefits of the IB ProgrammeStudents at International Baccalaureate (IB) World Schools are given a unique education:

• be encouraged to think independently and drive their own learning

• take part in programmes of education that can lead them to some of the highest ranking universities around the world

• become more culturally aware, through the development of a second language

• be able to engage with people in an increasingly globalized, rapidly changing world.

• IB World School students develop strong academic, social and emotional characteristics. They are also likely to perform well academically – often better than students on other programmes. https://vimeopro.com/iboorg/stanford-testimonials/video/163260155
