Why Podcasting?

• The need to distribute desktop deliverable learning modules.

• The ability to transmit instructional material in both an audio and visual manner if video is utilized.

• The ability to record lectures to repeat for students who missed sessions.

• Online curricular offerings

Why Podcasting?

• Alternative Method of Instruction for both Librarian and Faculty members

• Ability to breakdown lectures into small bites/bytes of information

• Can be an effective outreach tool when embedded in Web 2.0 venues

• Can be embedded in library websites or campus LMS systems (Blackboard etc.)

ADA Concerns for Podcasting

• CSUN web/instructional models under ADA compliance policies

• CSUN’s National Center on Deafness• Closed Captioning needed on Podcasts or

transcripts.• CSU signed with iTunes but has concerns with

iTunes University being in clear violation of the ADA and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act with respect to accessibility concerns

CSUN Background

• California State University Northridge (CSUN) is a comprehensive regional University with over 34,000 students translating to over 27,000 F.T.E.

• Located in the San Fernando Valley which is northern Los Angeles County

Growing Demands

• Information competency first a goal in General Education in 1999 and then CSUN revised general education requirements in 2004-2005 academic year

• Embedded information competency into the new general education requirements.

• Courses now designated as meeting the information competence requirement

• Even before general education requirements changes we reached 22,000

Growing Demands

• After information competency requirement went into effect we reached more than 25,000 students in bibliographic instruction sections in 2006/2007 academic years.

• We also reached departments that we had not done a lot of instruction for such as the Computer Science 100 and Mathematics 131

Growing Faculty Demands

• In 2005-2006 I began to lecture to all sections of the Computer Science 100 classes.

• Individually my workload has increased from having 15 lectures a semester to close to 50 lectures a semester.

• Requested that I teach and be videoed teaching information competency to Astronomy 352 class in Spring 2007.

Growing Faculty Demands

• Spring 2007 Prof. Marchisotto asked that we work on developing content to embed into the WebCT class she developed online for Mathematics 131 and the section of this course was going from 2 to 15.

• Spring 2007, we hired a Coordinator of Online Instruction to assist others in the development of online tutorials.

Meeting those demands

• Working with Coordinator Online Instructional Design designed short tutorials which can be embedded into WebCT classes or downloaded to iPods in Summer 2007 to meet the Professor’s requests for tutorials and online help.

Podcast Development

• Capturing content in the classroom or studio

• Determining podcast length

• Taking steps to ensure accessibility

• Delivering the podcasts
