Rita Donohue , our ' Y ProgramCoordinator and "ActingExecutive Director " attendedthe Business and ProfessionalWomen 's Club Winter BoardMeetings at the AmericanaHotel , this past weekend.

Rita is Second Vice Presidentand Membership Chairman of theBay Shore B.P.W. and her greatinterest in youth , which sheconstantl y expresses through her'Y' affiliation , is also exercisedin her chairmanship ot the NIKEClub of the B. & P. W.

NIKE is an organization ,sponsored by the Bay Shore B. &P. W., that serves to expose highschool girls to the many businessand professional opportunitiesnow open to women.

Margaret Smith , Nancy Suda ,Karen Sobotka and BethBoomgarden are among thegroup who joine d the B. & P.W.members on a tour of the UnitedNations and had lunch in theDelegates Dining Room.

The YMCA likewise offersopportunities for young people toserve either in paid positionssuch as life guards , instructors oraides and as volunteers invarious fields of endeavor so thatthey can have experiences thatmay help decide futurevocations.

One of my favorite quotesmade by a British statesman longago, "All that is required for thetriumph of evil , is that good menremain silent and do nothing ",brings to mind that I would like topublicly congratulate the jury ofmale citizens who recentlyjudged a sexually explicit film ,"The Green Door ', as obsceneand put a stop to its showing inour Long Island communities. AnX rating for a movie usuallymeans tht any youth over 18years of age can be admitted. Inthis writer 's opinion , it is aCRIME to allow such avulnerable and impressionableage group to be exposed to thetype of sexual filth depicted inthis movie. At that age thereusuall y has not been enoughexposure to experience to thefiner , more beautiful aspects oflove-making between man andwoman to counterbalan ce thedepraved or abnormal aspects offilms of this nature. My hat' s offto vou gentlemen !

Assistant District Attorney IraSimon is also to be congratulatedfor winning the case and said , "Ithink we can credit our SuffolkCounty jurors with a lot of goodcommon sense."

In another approach to thismatter , I recentl y attended apresentation of "The AmericanFilm TlreStre" special series ofstage plays adopted for 'motionpictures. A statement- jn theprogram "Cinebill" cdught -myattention. In a letter written tothe public by Howard L, Clark ,Chairman of "American ExpressCo.", co-sponsors of this filmventure , he wrote , "At a timewhen major manufac tur in gcompanies of this country aretaking positive steps againstpollution of the environment , itseems to us that not enough isbeing done about the pollution ofthe mind and spirit that per-meates our national communityas exemplified by the por-nography and violence beingshown on film and televisionscreens throughout the UnitedStates." Since 'Y* s have alwaysbeen in the business of developingwholesome and healthy ac-tivities , both of mind and body, Isay, "Amen to that , Mr. Clark"!

The pages of history the Bibl e, and even today 's newspapersare filled with all sorts of stories of loyalty. Varied illustrationsof famous - and foolish - loyalties are plentiful . Famous loyaltyis seen in the Biblical story of Ruth and her mother-in-lawNaomi; in the historical story of soldiers in snow at ValleyForge . Foolish and stupi d loyalty is seen in stories of Hitler 'sfollowers who heard no evil , saw no evil , spoke no evil in theirhero worship of their leader.

Loyalty is the very bedrock of every worthwhile humanrelationship. Our leaders , employers , family and friends expectloyalty, and deserve if - IF - in clear conscience we can linkourselves with them in common purposes of decency andgoodness. We do NOT owe them blanket endorsement ofeverything they think and everything they do. Shakespeare wasright , "This above all , to thine own self be true. And it mustfollow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to anyman." And it is still good advice. . . .Roger W. Kemp, SullivanFuneral Home Inc. Bay Shore-Kings Park.
