וישב בה עד מות הכהן הגדול
(If someone kills a person accidentally, he must be exiled
to one of the designated cities of refuge)
“And he shall remain there until the death of the high
priest.” (Bamidbar 35:25)
What does the High priest have to do with one individual
killing somebody by accident? Rashi explains that if the Kohen Gadol would have prayed more intensely this
never would have happened. By making the term of exile
contingent upon the death of the high priest, the Torah highlights his responsibility. In what other culture has the
leadership ever been held to so demanding a degree of
accountability. In our time, loss of life is a daily occurrence, due to criminal violence, reckless drunk
driving and domestic abuse. What sense of responsibility
do our civil leaders feel for such events? If, for each incident, they felt a fraction of the responsibility which
the high priest was made to feel, not one of them would
have a single night’s sleep. They would see to it that our laws be more stringent and their enforcement more strict.
The sense of responsibility the high priest carried was due
to the enormous sense of value that the Torah gives to a
life. Unfortunately, the attitude about life in our

We continue our discussion about plants and flower pots on Shabbos. In halachic terms, all
potted plants are considered to be nourished from the ground which means we consider the
potted plant connected to the ground. This applies whether the potted plant is outdoors or
even indoors, therefore one is not allowed to move or lift a potted plant on Shabbos. It is
permissible, to smell, touch, even bend the stem or leaves if they are soft and flexible. One
cannot move a plant or flowerpot from a shady area to a sunny area so that the exposure to the
sun will aid its growth. One is also not allowed to open a window or to pull up a shade with
the intention of allowing sun or air to aid a plant’s growth.
Flowers
Flowers in a vase may be moved on Shabbos. One may remove flowers from a vase full of
water. Once removed they may not be put back in water if that will cause further blossoming.
Flowers should be placed in water before Shabbos. On Shabbos one cannot place flowers in
water if the buds have not blossomed fully.
Sefer: Weekly Halacha Discussion
culture reflects our undervaluation of life. One of the functions of the priesthood was to
invoke the name of G-d for peace and tranquility; that function reached its peak with the
Kohen Gadol. The intensity of the high priest’s devotion to peace and the protection of each
individual depended upon how he valued each human life. A loss of human life was thus not
“just one of those things that can happen in society”, but something which touched the very
life of the high priest himself. How different our society would be if our leaders shared this
attitude!
Wishing all of you an inspiring Shabbos!

Tevilas Kelim- immersing new utensils in a mikvah
Utensils* which are bought from a non-Jew, even if they are brand new, require immersing in a
Kosher Mikvah. Just as a convert requires immersion in a Mikvah, symbolizing his conversion
from non-Jew to Jew, so too utensils require immersion when being transferred from non-
Jewish ownership to Jewish ownership. Most halachic opinions consider tevilas kelim to be a
Biblical command, (but regardless it is a mandatory Mitzvah not subject to custom).
*(this only applies to utensils that come in direct contact with food either during preparation or
at mealtime)
