Film Review
ldquoWe are the mods we are modsrdquo is what is chanted violently and excitedly by the youth cult in the
streets of Brighton in the 1979 motion picture ldquoQuadropheniardquo directed by Franc Roddam and
produced by The Who The film is set London 1964 and follows the rivalry
between two youth subcultures the mods and the rockers The antagonist of the film is the sheepish
not so handsome or popular teenager Jimmy a member of the sharp suited mod gang
ldquoQuadropheniardquo is one of few films out there that
gives an in-depth look into what it was like to be part of either the mods or rockers but does appear biased towards the mods as this is the gang we spend the majority
of the time with It is more than just a film about rowdy youths of the 1960rsquos it instead explores
different themes such as cultural diversity responsibility disappointment and becoming an adult
Jimmy is in a constant battle to ldquofit inrdquo with the rest of mods and will do whatever it takes to be cool as to him being a mod is a way of life This is contrasted with the
scenes that explore Jimmyrsquos work and home life The cinematography is nothing spectacular and can appear dated to some extent
due to the films age but does have some stand out scenes such as the alley scene in Brighton and the clifftop at the end of the film The music on the other hand is
spectacular coming straight from the rock opera album the film is packed with some of the best music that The Who have ever produced
Overall ldquoQuadropheniardquo is a great slice of British cinema and British history with a
stand out soundtrack and performances from many of the cast and in my opinion
ldquoQuadropheniardquo is the ultimate coming-of-age movie

Every Thursday Mrs Farrow takes a group of GCSEs
students up to HillTop farm in Ilton Masham The boys start with the routine feeding bedding and
checking of 350 herd of dairy and continental beef bulls Day to day calf husbandry includes training new calf
intakes to drink from automatic feeding stations vaccinations and treatments for new arrivals There is
also a breeding flock of 130 mixed breed sheep The boys get involved with foot trimming vaccinations and
dagging out Lambing is a particular highlight for all our students and everyone this year has successfully
delivered a lamb
The work doesnrsquot stop here as the lambs need vaccinating ear tagging and de-tailing before being
taken out to the fields Towards the end of the summer the boys will get involved with the sheep
shearing each fleece needs to be bagged up ready to be sold The students also get involved with
farm maintenance tasks such as renewing fencing breeze blocking and concreting
As well as all the practical written work needs to be completed on each module
This involves assignment completion on a range of farm based topics They all work
towards a level 2 qualification in Agriculture
Many of the past students whorsquove attended Hilltop have
gained successful placements and apprenticeships at Askham Bryan College So who knows our present
students could be the farmers of the future

Y8 Charity Event
On Friday 4th of March it was the Y8 charity day
All of Y8 GSRE classes took part in setting up and
managing their own stall and each pupil had a
specific role It was great fun for all the years and
every one enjoyed it there were many stalls such
as bake sales run by Kelsey Lee and Mia Hobson
paper aeroplane throwing contest run by Ryan
Wilcocks George Pickard and Harry Ingram
Teachers even took part in a few like pie the teacher in
the face where you could pay to throw a paper plate
with shaving cream at their face Mr Barber got
covered in it
The most amazing and impressive stall was called cancer crushers run by Josh
Allinson Ryan McMillan Smith Joshua Lockwood and Peter Biltcliffe They had a
human body outline on a piece of card with targets and multiple types of cancer You
could throw a tennis ball at the various targets and many people thought it was very
well made and it identified what we are trying to do to cancer
Overall we raised nearly pound250 towards the Teenage Cancer Trust

Cryptographers
Last term some of our KS3
students took part in the Alan
T u r n i n g C r y p t o gr a p h y Competition Now in its fifth
y e a r t he A l a n Tu r i n g Cryptography Competition is
aimed at secondary school children up to Year 11 You dont
need to be a computer whizz or a mathematical genius - you just
need to keep your wits about you and be good at solving
problems The students attended sessions to find out about different types of cipher and methods of decryption Over the course of the contest they had to solve
substitution ciphers a cryptotour (following a knights path around a chess board) find a hidden message from a flight itinerary using 3-letter airport codes
work out a Logo program from a seemingly random string of letters and numbers
and use the program to draw the message and a cipher formed from a series of emojis with different emojis being used for the most common letters The problems
increased in difficulty each week and the final one (which for us proved too tricky) required the use of modular arithmetic The students really enjoyed the
challenge of the puzzles and our two main teams finished in 236th and 237th place out of 738 competing teams nationwide Of particular mention should be Alfie
Hughes and Arthur Krech both Y7 who showed real skill and determination in solving the ciphers Well done to all involved Miss Bilby

a stem day for the year 5s from surrounding primary schools Science - students were learning about food chains and food webs particularly focusing on the ocean
which was the theme for the day They were given envelopes containing different pictures of marine life
and arrows to make a food web They then discussed the different adaptations of sharks and sea creatures and looked at some posters about global warming and
sea animals They linked up shark attacks with global warming as the posters were there to help them make
this link Thank you to Mrs Beeton
In Food Technology students learnt how to categorised fish into groups of shellfish white fish and oily fish They then
watched a video on how to cook fish and then another to see how to tell a good piece of fish from a bad one They then worked in groups and went to the cooking stations to cook
with different flavours like French Indian Italian Thai and oriental When the fish was cooked they all tasted it and
most of them really enjoyed it Thank you to Mrs Bradley
In the ICT room students got to explore and work
with the little pi computers They
learnt about how computers hide passwords and start up menus and were shown using pi Then they had to create a folder with their names on it and
write out some code They played a game to see which colour light flashed and wrote it down Then a
special wired machine helped to detect sharks All the children really liked this lesson Thank you to
Mr Barnes
In the Maths lesson it was linked with Science so they were learning about global warming and the seas rising Firstly they watched a video about the
seas rising so living on islands is becoming harder Then they had to complete a work sheet on how
many cities would be covered in water if global warming didnrsquot stop The maths was very challenging so the year 5rsquos did very well to
understand it Thank you to Miss Pendlington
All the children really enjoyed the day Many of the children got awards for being such keen learners

Film Review
ldquoWe are the mods we are modsrdquo is what is chanted violently and excitedly by the youth cult in the
streets of Brighton in the 1979 motion picture ldquoQuadropheniardquo directed by Franc Roddam and
produced by The Who The film is set London 1964 and follows the rivalry
between two youth subcultures the mods and the rockers The antagonist of the film is the sheepish
not so handsome or popular teenager Jimmy a member of the sharp suited mod gang
ldquoQuadropheniardquo is one of few films out there that
gives an in-depth look into what it was like to be part of either the mods or rockers but does appear biased towards the mods as this is the gang we spend the majority
of the time with It is more than just a film about rowdy youths of the 1960rsquos it instead explores
different themes such as cultural diversity responsibility disappointment and becoming an adult

Film Review
ldquoWe are the mods we are modsrdquo is what is chanted violently and excitedly by the youth cult in the
streets of Brighton in the 1979 motion picture ldquoQuadropheniardquo directed by Franc Roddam and
produced by The Who The film is set London 1964 and follows the rivalry
between two youth subcultures the mods and the rockers The antagonist of the film is the sheepish
not so handsome or popular teenager Jimmy a member of the sharp suited mod gang
ldquoQuadropheniardquo is one of few films out there that
gives an in-depth look into what it was like to be part of either the mods or rockers but does appear biased towards the mods as this is the gang we spend the majority
of the time with It is more than just a film about rowdy youths of the 1960rsquos it instead explores
different themes such as cultural diversity responsibility disappointment and becoming an adult

Film Review
ldquoWe are the mods we are modsrdquo is what is chanted violently and excitedly by the youth cult in the
streets of Brighton in the 1979 motion picture ldquoQuadropheniardquo directed by Franc Roddam and
produced by The Who The film is set London 1964 and follows the rivalry
between two youth subcultures the mods and the rockers The antagonist of the film is the sheepish
not so handsome or popular teenager Jimmy a member of the sharp suited mod gang
ldquoQuadropheniardquo is one of few films out there that
gives an in-depth look into what it was like to be part of either the mods or rockers but does appear biased towards the mods as this is the gang we spend the majority
of the time with It is more than just a film about rowdy youths of the 1960rsquos it instead explores
different themes such as cultural diversity responsibility disappointment and becoming an adult

Allinson Ryan McMillan Smith Joshua Lockwood and Peter Biltcliffe They had a
human body outline on a piece of card with targets and multiple types of cancer You
could throw a tennis ball at the various targets and many people thought it was very
well made and it identified what we are trying to do to cancer

y e a r t he A l a n Tu r i n g Cryptography Competition is
aimed at secondary school children up to Year 11 You dont
need to be a computer whizz or a mathematical genius - you just
need to keep your wits about you and be good at solving
problems The students attended sessions to find out about different types of cipher and methods of decryption Over the course of the contest they had to solve
substitution ciphers a cryptotour (following a knights path around a chess board) find a hidden message from a flight itinerary using 3-letter airport codes
work out a Logo program from a seemingly random string of letters and numbers
and use the program to draw the message and a cipher formed from a series of emojis with different emojis being used for the most common letters The problems
increased in difficulty each week and the final one (which for us proved too tricky) required the use of modular arithmetic The students really enjoyed the
challenge of the puzzles and our two main teams finished in 236th and 237th place out of 738 competing teams nationwide Of particular mention should be Alfie

In the ICT room students got to explore and work
with the little pi computers They
learnt about how computers hide passwords and start up menus and were shown using pi Then they had to create a folder with their names on it and
write out some code They played a game to see which colour light flashed and wrote it down Then a
special wired machine helped to detect sharks All the children really liked this lesson Thank you to
Mr Barnes
In the Maths lesson it was linked with Science so they were learning about global warming and the seas rising Firstly they watched a video about the
seas rising so living on islands is becoming harder Then they had to complete a work sheet on how
many cities would be covered in water if global warming didnrsquot stop The maths was very challenging so the year 5rsquos did very well to

anyone regardless of their diagnosis solely on the basis of their need Do
you know they cared for over 40000 people across the UK in the last year They
also take part in research in the areas of various types of cancer and new ways to
better care for the patient and their relatives Thanks to your support we were able
to raise nearly pound70 Well done everyone Harriet Ormston DBE
Film Review
ldquoWe are the mods we are modsrdquo is what is chanted violently and excitedly by the youth cult in the
streets of Brighton in the 1979 motion picture ldquoQuadropheniardquo directed by Franc Roddam and
produced by The Who The film is set London 1964 and follows the rivalry
between two youth subcultures the mods and the rockers The antagonist of the film is the sheepish
not so handsome or popular teenager Jimmy a member of the sharp suited mod gang
ldquoQuadropheniardquo is one of few films out there that
gives an in-depth look into what it was like to be part of either the mods or rockers but does appear biased towards the mods as this is the gang we spend the majority
of the time with It is more than just a film about rowdy youths of the 1960rsquos it instead explores
different themes such as cultural diversity responsibility disappointment and becoming an adult

Overall we raised nearly pound250 towards the Teenage Cancer Trust

aimed at secondary school children up to Year 11 You dont
need to be a computer whizz or a mathematical genius - you just
need to keep your wits about you and be good at solving
problems The students attended sessions to find out about different types of cipher and methods of decryption Over the course of the contest they had to solve
substitution ciphers a cryptotour (following a knights path around a chess board) find a hidden message from a flight itinerary using 3-letter airport codes
work out a Logo program from a seemingly random string of letters and numbers
and use the program to draw the message and a cipher formed from a series of emojis with different emojis being used for the most common letters The problems
increased in difficulty each week and the final one (which for us proved too tricky) required the use of modular arithmetic The students really enjoyed the
challenge of the puzzles and our two main teams finished in 236th and 237th place out of 738 competing teams nationwide Of particular mention should be Alfie

Year 5 Stem Day
On Tuesday 19th of April Bedale High School hosted
a stem day for the year 5s from surrounding primary schools Science - students were learning about food chains and food webs particularly focusing on the ocean
which was the theme for the day They were given envelopes containing different pictures of marine life
and arrows to make a food web They then discussed the different adaptations of sharks and sea creatures and looked at some posters about global warming and
sea animals They linked up shark attacks with global warming as the posters were there to help them make
this link Thank you to Mrs Beeton

Overall we raised nearly pound250 towards the Teenage Cancer Trust

aimed at secondary school children up to Year 11 You dont
need to be a computer whizz or a mathematical genius - you just
need to keep your wits about you and be good at solving
problems The students attended sessions to find out about different types of cipher and methods of decryption Over the course of the contest they had to solve
substitution ciphers a cryptotour (following a knights path around a chess board) find a hidden message from a flight itinerary using 3-letter airport codes
work out a Logo program from a seemingly random string of letters and numbers
and use the program to draw the message and a cipher formed from a series of emojis with different emojis being used for the most common letters The problems
increased in difficulty each week and the final one (which for us proved too tricky) required the use of modular arithmetic The students really enjoyed the
challenge of the puzzles and our two main teams finished in 236th and 237th place out of 738 competing teams nationwide Of particular mention should be Alfie
Hughes and Arthur Krech both Y7 who showed real skill and determination in solving the ciphers Well done to all involved Miss Bilby
