EDITOR’S NOTE
Namaste,
My journey with Yoga and the Yogendra family commenced at the same time. New to both, I got absorbed
into Yoga as well as marriage with unconditional support of Hansaji. She helped me understand the
values and ethos of practicing Yoga as well as settling into married life. With a strong foundation like this,
I comprehended the finer nuances of a simple householder’s life with yogic values.
As a matter of fact, Shri Yogendraji, the Founder of The Yoga Institute, married Sita Devi in 1927 to
become India’s first Householder Yogi. He believed that Yoga could help improve the lives of
householders.
Yoga translates as union, with self as well as of mind, body and soul. Likewise marriage is also a union of
two persons committed to sharing their lives in a loving relationship.
Yoga and marriage run parallel to each other and help to increase the awareness of self as well as the
spouse.
From my experience, I can state that Yoga helps marriage in many ways. Practicing Yoga enables you to
understand yourself and others too. Yoga also makes you a better partner because it helps you to be in
touch with yourself. And when you’re more in touch with yourself, it’s easier to connect more deeply with
your spouse too.
Yoga renders clarity and teaches you to take responsibility, gain insight and let go even in a marriage.
Awareness, commitment, determination and non-attachment are a few prerequisites for the successful
progress in Yoga and marriage. Both hold a clear mirror for self-introspection and help to expand your
integrity.
While, Hansaji emphasises further on this topic in her article Marriage, Dr. Jayadeva shares about a
husband who helps his wife become capable of handling herself and overcome her problems.

Pearls of Wisdom
n o u r p r e s e n t c u l t u r e , m a r i t a l
Idisharmony and disputes have become
common. Instead of understanding
and solving problems, one tends to take
easy way of separation. Yoga helps one to
understand the role of the ‘I’ sense.
Everyone is trying to project the I-sense
and each one has his own idea. But it is only
when one leaves the ‘I’, does one gain the
sense to transform marriage into a fruitful
association.
Marriage is a union of two individuals and
each one needs to trust in the larger
process behind this institution. In a marital
relationship, the couple has to understand
that each one is still independent and has
to be responsible for self.
Yoga teaches to decrease the egoistic
tendencies. While Asanas generate
humility, the practice of Yamas and
Niyamas help too. The essence is to ‘let go’
our own self and accept something larger.
The husband-wife have to let go their egos.
If each individual sticks to his ego, then the
p r o b l e m s a r i s e . T h e r e m e d y i s t o
surrender to the result of God. In
acceptance, the ‘I’ sense does not come.
Each individual has his own view and
respects it too. It is also important to
understand that every individual has
separate needs, values and outlook which
also varies distinctly among man and
woman.
The main task is to remove the I-sense. If
the person continues, by not giving
respect to the other, one's own I-sense will
be inflated and he will not be ready to bend
at any cost. The key lies in accepting your
spouse as he/she is and make no attempt to
change him/her.
Smt. Hansaji Jayadeva Yogendra Director, The Yoga Institute.
Ruled by ego, a spouse will only keep
finding faults in the other. But if the I-sense
is removed, then it is easy to maintain love,
r e s p e c t a n d c a r e i n t h i s b e a u t i f u l
relationship. Some people fear committing
to marriage because of the looming,
expensive risk of divorce. A happy family is
the basic unit of a society. Wedlock can be
a trying association unless one believes in
the institution of marriage and never lets
anything disturb it. In our culture, many
customs and traditions are established
which keeps a couple from running away
from marriage. Partners not only have to
make decisions, but they have to support
them too. One can think of possibilities
that can occur and then gear up with
preventive measures. It is by neglecting
the institution of marriage that one gets
tense and invites trouble.
I n t h i s d a y a n d a g e , l i v i n g v e r y
independently from each other also takes
away connection and joy from the
relationship. Couples must function as a
t e a m w h e n i t c o m e s t o p a r e n t i n g ,
h o u s e h o l d d u t i e s , fi n a n c i a l
responsibilities, and social commitments
too.
A couple needs to be in tandem with each
other at emotional as well as intellectual
level and assure supporting actions too. A
s u c c e s s f u l m a r r i a g e i s d r i v e n b y
unconditional love as well as unwavering
commitment, faith and trust. Small
thoughts and actions go a long way to
strengthen a marriage. For eg., Dr.
Jayadeva always keeps a throat lozenge in
his pocket whenever we are giving
lectures as he is aware that I often need it
due to long hours of talking. Also in my
opinion if a wife knows that her husband is
forgetful, she must ensure they celebrate
their wedding anniversary happily. She can
do this by reminding her husband well in
a d v a n c e a n d m a k e n e c e s s a r y
arrangements herself, instead of waiting
for him to forget and then pounce on him
with anger and lose the game too.
Happy family life is the heart of the Indian
culture.
05 SATTVA AUGUST 2017 YOGA
ince ages, women have always
Ssought for some miracle potion to
maintain a youthful appearance.
O u r a n c i e n t w r i t i n g s h a v e a m p l e
suggestion and very practical tips but
western influence has taken us by storm
and we seek that magical solution in
‘packaged’ off the shelf bottles, hoping
that some such lotion would transform us
into ravishing beauties. Alas! That never is
the case; often we land up with more
problems than we’d bargained for. Instead
of that proverbial flawless completion, we
hide dull and dry patches with make-up.
Unpleasant appearance is acquired by
wrong habits of living and eating, lack of
exercise and a cheerful temperament. In
fact it is well know that a smile is the best
facial toning treatment for the skin. A
cheerful, friendly, smiling person never
seems to get old and the facial muscles too
remain tight and strong.
Our skin is basically made up of dead cells.
These dead cells are periodically thrown
off and replaced by new ones. We all must
have experienced that on certain days our
skin looks better than normal.
So let’s start by understanding our skin in
relation to our health. If we are getting
s u f fi c i e n t p h y s i c a l a n d b r e a t h i n g
exercises, plus fresh nutritive food, half of
our problems are solved.
To maintain physical hygiene -
Soap on facial area robs the skin of its glow
and makes it dry. Instead we could use a
simple home-made scrub which acts as an
exfoliant. Most of us have skin that is
partly oily and partly dry. The skin also
changes texture with seasons. Also it is
well know that a smile is the best facial
toning treatment for the skin.
So let’s go back to nature. Let’s explore the
variety of natural ingredients which in no
way have any adverse reaction but
definitely aid and enhance beauty.
The skin is the first indicator of not only
our beauty but health too! No amount of
cosmetic and makeup will bring a glow to a
dull lifeless skin.
General ways to pamper and nourish skin:
• Mash a banana or papaya in cold
milk. Add few drops of lime juice.
Apply on the face. Relax for 15
minutes and wash off.
• Mix equal parts of honey and lemon
juice and use as a moisturizer.
• To cleanse the skin daily - use cotton
wool pads soaked in plain milk and
just watch the dirt coming off.
• To bring a glow to the skin - apply
warm lemon juice and wash off with
warm water.
• Soak a couple of almonds overnight,
peel off the skin, grind it and add rose
water to this mixture. Scrub it into
skin and wash off.
Be ready to receive compliments within six
months.

ayanti Patel, a humorist would say
Jthat he had become such a creature
of habits instilled by external factors
that he would get up when his five o'clock
alarm bell rang. He would get ready to go
to office as his wife shouted from the
kitchen. He would run to Khar suburban
railway station to catch a 9.30 am fast train
to Mumbai City. Very surprisingly he
would find the destination station,
Churchgate, empty. He would be shocked
at this till he realised that he mistakenly
has hurried from home to his office on
Sunday, a holiday.
In schools, it is a routine practice to keep
quiet or stand up when teacher comes, or
sit down when the teacher goes, or to go
for lunch when bell rings, or get into class
again when the bell rings, etc. Just as much
we have learnt to routinely control our
external behaviour we have not received
instructions to sit absolutely quiet or not
think for few minutes or think only on
chosen object for five minutes etc.
Routines and habit contrarius all our life.
As a result, in most areas of life we remain
very poor in handling ourselves. We get
emotional, stressed out and even suffer
physical symptoms. Medical books tell us
t h a t 8 0 % o f t h e d i s e a s e s a r e
psychosomatic that are mainly emotional
in nature but manifest as physical
symptoms. This would include allergy of all
kinds. A doctor told us of newly married
couple entering their new home first day.
Actually the husband had decorated the
h o u s e n e a t l y w i t h b e a u t i f u l r o s e s
everywhere. He was a rose lover. But the
newly wed wife shrieked seeing the roses
saying she was allergic to roses. The
husband quickly took away the roses and
dumped them in a dustbin.
Next time when she shrieked seeing rose
flowers in a flower pot, the husband
explained to her that it was not a real rose.
It was an artificial plastic rose. She stopped
sneezing as a result. Many days later the
husband took her to the flowerpot and
told her that they were real roses. She had
been smelling them for the last 3 months.
She had no allergic reaction since she
believed they were plastic roses.
What Yoga does here is to provide
relaxation, concentration and certain self-
control. One becomes capable of handling
oneself and then overcome one's problem.

Yoga Celebrates Life
h e r e i s s o m e t h i n g i n n a t e l y
Tdeficient in modern medicine. It is
based on a science that looks upon
the human body as a machine. Disease is
simply a breakdown of the machine. This
view naturally deprives medicine of an
emotional angle. The doctor treats the
disease and not the person. Just as a
mechanic handles a damaged piece of
machinery. But human beings have
thoughts, hopes and desires. They feel,
they analyze and these things are rarely
discussed in general medicine. If they are
tackled, it is done by the psychiatrist who
again sees the workings of the mind very
mechanically, governed by psychological
principles.
Yoga helps the doctor turn into the healer
and in no way distorts medical science. It
supplements medicine and makes it alive.
No longer is it a technique of repairing. It
becomes a tool of saving. The doctor starts
looking at the patient as a person who is
alive. He looks into all the needs of the
patients not just his physical problems.
Whenever there is a disease of the body
there is disturbance felt in the mental and
s p i r i t u a l a s p e c t s o f t h e p a t i e n t ' s
personality. While allopath does a good
job on the physical front, Yoga helps in
tackling the rest of his personality. Once I
was confronted with a patient who had
liver cell failure (cirrhosis) He was in his
terminal stages and from all practical
points of view he was dying. He could not
be saved. The idealist would say, "He could
be saved by persistence. Nothing is
impossible". But such a cliché creates
hopes and expectations that are bound to
be shattered. A philosophy of acceptance
helps the doctor come to terms with the
limitations of his vocation. He realizes he is
just human and not God. With Karma Yoga
he helps the person feel comfortable and
gives the man the strength to accept his
own mortality. My patient died. But, in all
those weeks that I saw him, to me he was
just a terminal patient of cirrhosis. I felt his
pain but could not empathize with him.
Medicine had not trained me to tackle the
inevitable end of man. Sure enough I did all
the investigations and gave all the
necessary therapeutics little realizing at
this point my patient needed mental
strength and spiritual hope. I was a doctor
but I was not healing, the REAL wound. If
only I had known Yoga. I could have helped
him and myself.
Now with Yoga I can be a greater realist. A
patient came who had a major case of
tuberculosis. We diagnosed him and put
him on medications. In a few weeks he had
recovered fully. He no longer coughed out
blood or had problems with breathing. But
his treatment had to continue for another
two months. The patient however, did not
see tile-sense in taking medicines., since
he felt quite all right. I tried my best to
explain, I appealed to his logic, his
emotions, and his rationality. Nothing
worked. He just stopped coming to the
clinic. I could have got angry at his
stupidity but I did not. I accepted the
situation. I let go of the patient and hoped,
to God, that somehow he wouldn't be a
patient, again. I was at peace. Thanks to
Yoga.

Recipe of the Month
MOONG DAL PATTIES
INGREDIENTS
1 cup Moong Dal
1 cup buttermilk
1 cup grated bottle gourd (Dudhi)
Coriander leaves (Hara Dhania)
1/4 tsp turmeric powder (Haldi)
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/4t sp asafetida (Hing)
1 tsp oil
Salt to taste
METHOD
1. Soak the Moong Dal for 5 hours.
2. Grind it and add the rest of the
ingredients. Mix well.
3. Set aside for 1 hour.
4. Grease a pan and spread 1 tsp of the
mixture evenly.
5. Cook until lightly brown on both
sides.
6. Serve hot with green chutney.
Ideal to curb the snack-time cravings, the
moong dal patties are very easy to make
and more easy to digest too. The firm
texture of the moong daal against the soft
texture of the patties makes them a must-
have low calorie treat.
The good thing about this nutritious
sattvic Indian recipe is that it strikes a
perfect balance between nutrition and
flavor.

I’m a proud student of The Yoga
Institute. I joined the institute in late
1960’s when people weren’t aware
about Yoga & thought it was close to
being a Sanyasi. The Yoga Institute has
changed my perspective towards
Yoga i.e., it is not only about Asana but
it is a much deeper subject. Yoga has
become an essential part of my life. Dr.
Saab’s teachings have really helped
me in my life & I consider myself to be
fortunate enough to learn Yoga from
him. This spiritual abode brings in

remember this quote of Dr. Saab “Less
is More”.

I have been associated with The Yoga

go through the upheavals of my life
with a balanced state of mind and had
helped me achieve whatever I have

underestimate the importance of
innovation, technology and strategy
but it is as important to have values,
beliefs and philosophy in business. To
sum it up, I would say that Jetking is
where it is today because of its
association with yoga.

They say when the student is ready
the Guru appears. I came across The
Yoga Institute when I was questioning
t h e p u r p o s e o f m y l i f e . L i f e
experiences had battered my ego
enough to receive the wisdom of Yoga
in a spirit of humility and surrender.
Whatever work I was assigned at the
Institute I did it with dedication,
realizing the value of being committed
to whatever I did. I have experienced
exponential personal growth in a
short period of time. I actualized my
creative gifts as a leader, teacher,
counsellor and writer. Every day of my
life I express gratitude to the almighty
for bestowing me with the gift of The
Yoga Institute. For me it is not just an
institute, it is a sanctuary for my soul.

I was interested in Yoga since a long
time. I was practicing it in Spain, China
& other places however it was in The
Yoga Institute that I learnt what real
Yoga is. I discovered that Yoga is not
just a set of gymnastic stretches but
comprises philosophy & study of mind.
I s t a r t e d c o m i n g j u s t f o r s o m e
weekend classes, then gave a try to 21
Days Better Living Course, which I
loved and I really recommend it. Later i
did my Teachers Training Course and
now I’m a Yoga instructor.Also the
Institute is QCI certified. The Sattvic
food offered at The Yoga Institute is
delicious. I think Yoga can have impact
on our lives and The Yoga Institute is
one of the best places in the world to
discover it.

I joined this Institute 7 years back as a
student in regular class and since then
there is no looking back. As a student I

teachers and the way of teaching.
Previously, I used to work in a
marketing department so there was a
lot of sales pressure & the work was
hectic. My brother absorbed this and
told me to quit the job and work at the
Institute instead.
So today I work here at the front desk
and I’m extremely happy to be here. I
feel fortunate to work here & meet
people from all around the world. I’ve
learnt a lot of things from Hansaji.
Presently, Hrishi sir and Praneeji are
working hard to take The Yoga
Institute to even greater heights.

YOGASATTVA
“Marriage should symbolize the feeling of closet affinity whether physical, mental or spiritual”
Shri Yogendra - Father of
Modern Yoga Renaissance
Shri Yogendraji had promised his father that he would
marry and be a housholder too. He seeked a bride who
would share his life and be his partner in his life goal. He
planned to marry and bring up a family for he believed
that by his own example, he would make Yoga
acceptable to modern men and women. The search for
an educated and cultured bride came to an end when
Shri Yogendraji was united in marriage to Smt. Sita Devi
on August 1927.
Once settled in the marriage, Sita Devi stated, “I was
both lucky and pleased to be by his side as a partner in
his inspiring pioneering mission of Yoga.” She also
added, “I was charged with the spirit of total surrender
to his ideals and single minded service to the cause of
Yoga so dear to his heart.” She joined him in his mission
of spreading the knowledge of Yoga in the world and
began teaching women and children at The Yoga
Institute.
In 1977, almost close to their Golden Wedding
Anniversary, Smt. Sita Devi shared, “As my mind travels
through this long passage of joyous union, I am inspired
by his work and achievements. His tremendous hard
and completely selfless work, clarity of vision, a
tremendous bounty of knowledge he has stored within
himself,, softened by wisdom have wrought miracles
which are hard to describe. I can say with all humility
that he is a great personality, a genius, a philosopher
and an all-knowing person, the yogi….” Founder, Shri Yogendraji
