    mosaicfacingthestoneseat,turntoyourrightandwalktoParkHillroad(10m).Crosstheroadbythepedestriancrossingandgodownthealleywayahead,toreachHighStreet.TurnleftandproceedtotheminiroundaboutattheentrancetotheHighStreetcarparkontheright.Walkthroughthecarparkheadingforafootpathatthefarlefthandcorner,withthefootballfieldontheleftandtheriversidepicnicareaontheright.

    2. SD49374545Followthepatharoundtheplayingfieldbytheriver,underthebridgebytheriverandthenovertheflooddefenceembankment,viatheconcretesteps,totheMillenniumGreen.

    3. SD49584562Followthepathfor600mtoagateontoWyreLaneatthefarendoftheMillenniumGreen.Gothroughthisgateandturnrightforafewmetresuntilyouseeapathandinformationpanelontheleftbetweentwohedges.Followthisoverthefootbridge,turningleftontheotherside,

    AboutThisWalkFromGarstangweheadNorth,initiallyfollowingtheriverWyre,thenoneofitstributaries–GrizedaleBrook.AftercrossingthebusyM6motorwaythere’sasectionoffarmlandandwoodlandbeforejoiningaquietcountrylaneintothepicturesquevillageofScorton.Thenextsectionisaverywaterylandscapedottedwithmanylakes;evidenceoflarge-scalegravelworkingsthathavenowbeensensitivelyreturnedtonature.AfterpassingthroughtheWyreside

    Lakesfisheryandcaravansitetheroutere-joinstheriverWyrethroughalovelystretchofcountrysidetotheformermillvillageofDolphinholme.TheroutetoAbbeysteadbeginshighalongthesideoftheriverWyrevalley,offeringgreatviewsacrosstotheNorthBowlandFellsofWard’sStone,GritFellandClougha.AfterdescendingtotheriversidewepassthesiteofthetragicAbbeysteadwater-worksexplosionof1984.ThefinalstretchpassesinfrontofthenowdisusedAbbeysteaddam–whichinformertimeswasusedtostorewaterforthemanymillssiteddownstreamalongtheriver.

    THEREARENOWTWOROUTEOPTIONS;paragraphs5-8belowfollowaslightlyhigherlevelrouteacrossfieldpathstothevillageofScorton,withgoodviewsonaclearday.However,ifyouwishtostayclosertotheRiverWyre,gothroughthegateandturnleft,followingHazelheadLanetowhereitjoinsGubberfordLanenearabridgeovertheRiverWyre.Donotcrossthebridge,butbearrightacrosstheroadandthroughapedestriangatetojointheriversidepath.Followthepath,whicheventuallyjoinstheroad,underarailwaybridgeandonintoScortonVillage.Nowcontinuefromparagraph9.

SD50255010TurnrightalongthegraveltrackuntilitjoinsthetarmacroadnearthebridgeovertheRiverWyre–thisisCleveleyBridge.Turnleftoverthebridgeandimmediatelytakeapathontherightwhichfollowstheriverupstream.Thepathinitiallyfollowsaraisedbank,butafter200mthepathdivides;taketherightfork,whichdescendsfromthebankandsoonleavestheriverside.Taketheleftforkwhichleadsintoafieldviaastileandboardwalk.

SD54495381Crossthebridgeandturnright.Walkstraightaheadacrosstheundulatingpasture,withtherivervisibleontheright.Stayonthehighergroundacrossthispasture(approx.50mfromthetreeline)passingasmallstonecarvingofaduck,crossasmallditchandkeepinthebeltoftreesaheadtojoinafarmtrackatabend.Continuestraightaheadfollowingthetrack,whicheventuallybecomesaconcreteroadway.ShortlyafterpassingtheAbbeysteadwaterpumpingstationleavetheconcretetrackandcontinuestraightaheadtoagatenearthecornerofadry-stonewallwithawoodbeyond.

    23. SD55555385AtthispointtheWyreWaydivergestakingbothnortherlyandsoutherlyroutesaroundtheAbbeysteaddamandreservoirbeforejoiningupinAbbeystead:

    thetreesandcrossingseveralfootbridges(forapprox.1km),untiliteventuallymeetsatarmaclane.Turnleftandfollowthelaneforabout200mtothecarparkatStoopsBridge,ignorethetrackontherightsignposted‘WyreWay’,thiswillbeourreturnonthefinalsectionoftheWyreway;the‘TarnbrookLoop’.ForthenortherlyroutegothroughthegateandheaddownhilltowardsthebridgebutafteraveryshortdistanceturnleftandfollowthepathpasttheAbbeysteaddamandreservoirtotheright.Continueonwithawoodtoyourrighttoeventuallymeetingwithanotherfootpathjoiningfromtheleft.Continuetotherightacrossafieldtomeetatarmacroad.Turnrightandfollowtheroadforabout500mthroughthevillagetocrossthebridgeovertheTarnbrookWyreandturnrightintothecarparkatStoopsBridge.
