Direct bonding – Proven technology for the future
Windscreen bonding with polyurethane adhesives began its’
successful reign in automobile manufacturing more than 30 years
ago. At the time this represented the first major technical breakthrough in
bonding technology. The significance of bonded glass for the
dependability and safety of vehicles is a generally acknowledged fact
and no new car is built today without direct glazing.
The requirements on windscreen bonding systems have increased
steadily. While in the beginning the emphasis was placed on reliable
tightness and retention of the windscreen in crash situations, in later
stages progress made in the field of car body engineering applied to
windscreen bonding as well.
Würth is working intensively towards further advances in this
technology, such as the omission of black glass primer,
independent to climate 1-component adhesive and other chemical
reaction mechanisms, particularly in view of weathering, thermal and
moisture stability, so that they will continue to be the dominating material
of choice foreseeable future.

Preparation
Getting the right preparation
for a job is vital. With the
right preparation in place jobs will
be efficient and there will be no
time wasted looking for required
tools and materials. Würth provides
all the required preparation tools
from health and safety equipment
such as pimple palm knitted gloves
(0899 400 020) and goggles
(0899 100 0) to windscreen tools
such as suction handles (0714 58 28).
Making sure the car is also
prepared is another key factor,
placing protective covers over seats,
dashboard and hood of the vehicle
makes sure that every preparation
needed is taken care of.

Separation and removal
Removing of the trims and seals
can be achieved by different
means. Everyone has there
preferred and desired method,
which the simple final result is for a
quick and efficient separation.
Powerful electric (0702 697 1) and
pneumatic (0703 861 1) cutters
use an oscillating motion. Whilst
other tools such as removal knives
or cutting wire could be the more
simple method. When cutting out
windscreens it is vital that goggles
and gloves are worn.

New windscreen
With all new windscreens prior
to cleaning them down,
checking windscreen for proper fit
and marking positions with adhesive
tape is essential. Würth provides the
perfect tools for this job. With
designated suction handles related to
the size of the windscreen, windscreen
stands (0714 58 262) and active
glass cleaner (0890 024 1), checking
new glass for defects or damage is
easily noticed.

Windscreen Preparation
Preparing the windscreen to be
primed and installing of trims
or rubber seals has to be done
efficiently otherwise will lead to a
ruining of the job. The PU pre-
coating, PVC or PU-RIM moulding
must be pre-treated with activator
PU/PVC (0890 024 3). Cutting back
the residual adhesive bead can be
made easy using a Wurth Multi
cutter and scraper. The formed
bead then provides and ideal
surface for the new glass adhesive.

Windscreen Adhesive
The Würth windscreen adhesive
product range consists of two
types of polyurethane adhesives for
windscreen bonding.
1-Component (1K) is easy to
handle with no special processing
tools and cures depending on
humidity and temperature at
certain speed from outside to core
2-Component (2K) This cures
chemically throughout the adhesive
bead and is independent of
humidity and temperature which
gives a guaranteed drive away time
Ultimate is the newest technology
in direct windscreen bonding it is
a 1K component adhesive but
unlike the other 1K component
adhesives it is independent to the
climate. The high modulus and non-
conductive properties make it to be
suitable for any job, with the 1hour
guaranteed drive away time with
airbag at an ambient temperature
from -10°C to 30°C, it makes
Ultimate adhesive the most
effective on the market.

Glass repair starter set
Stone damage of compound
glass windscreen can be
repaired economically within the
shortest possible time with the aid
of wurth windscreen repair
products. (Provided the stone
damage is not within the immediate
field of vision of the driver or near
the edge of the glass) The repair
effectively prevents the
propagation of cracks, maintaining
the full stability of the glass. In
order to promote this, in
comparison to replacement of the
windscreen, more economical
system, many insurance companies
assume the full costs of the repair.

Conditions for repairs of compoundglass windscreen
1. Only damage to the outer surface
of the glass may be repaired. The
inner surface and the plastic film
may not show any damage.
2. The repair must be carried out as
soon as possible after the damage.
No visible moisture or dirt is
allowed to penetrate the crack.
3. The diameter of the crater at
the point of impact may not be
greater than 5mm.
4. Any cracks propagating from the
point of impact may not be longer
than 50mm and they may not
extend to the edge of the glass.
In cars, a driver’s field of vision is considered tobe a 29cm wide vertical strip centred on thesteering wheel, the upper and lower limits beingthe edges of the windscreen wiper area.
In case of trucks the driver’s field of vision isformed by a square with a side length of 29cm,with the driver’s seat in the centre position.
impact points located in
the driver’s field of vision

EN bonding
for optimal adhesion of the
adhesive to the body flange
• Do not apply primer to the
residual bead.
• For safety reasons, activate the
residual bead by applying
Activator PU/PVC.
• In case of newly painted vehicles,
apply primer to the body flange.
• In case of windscreen bonded
with butyl or MS polymer
adhesive any residue must be
removed completely.
for a "tight" windscreen
• The vehicle may not be placed on
a hoist (due to the danger of
distortion).
• Observe the correct application
thickness of the adhesive to
guarantee sufficient contact
between the surfaces to be
joined.
• Execute the butt joint with due
accuracy (beginning and end of
adhesive bead).
• Install the windscreen within the
processing time of the adhesive,
since proper adhesion to the
surface is no longer possible
after skin formation.
• Do not re-adjust the windscreen
after setting it in place.
• Make sure that drive-away times
are complied with!
for optimal curing of the
adhesives
• Do not use thinners, brake
cleaner or cleaners containing
alcohol for windscreen bonding.
Do not store open containers with
these products in the immediate
vicinity during the curing time.
• Insure the humidity level and
temperature is not too low when
processing
1K adhesives (ideal: 23°C/50%
relative humidity).
• When using 2K adhesive, make
sure you do not inadvertently use
the A or B comp. twice in a
double cartridge.
for optimal adhesion of the
adhesive to the windscreen
• Always use Active Cleaner for
preliminary cleaning of the glass
Insure you dry the glass
thoroughly after cleaning.
• Do not treat pre-primed
windscreen with Activator
PU/PVC, just apply primer.
• Shake primer well prior to use.
• Adhere to drying times of primer
(15 minutes) or Activator PU/PVC
(at least 5 minutes). Do not apply
adhesive before!
Top tipsCleanness and precision are indispensable when
bonding windscreens.
Always check the expiry date of windscreen adhesives
(dates are indicated on the cartridges and sachets).
