1.1 LOFTING

3 Vertical Curves

Lofting with 3 and 4 horizontal curves began to widen the shape, taking the form of a canyon wall. With the last iteration I twisted the end curves opposite to the rest of the structure. This was done to define the relationship between the line-work “frame” that creates the form.

2 Curves

Beginning with 2 basic curves in grasshopper, the lofts seem to only have a couple of directions or boundaries to which they are pulled and pushed. When experimenting with 3 curves, the forms began to take on exciting shapes.

4 & 5 Curves

Further exploration into 4 & 5 curve lofts exercised complex geometries and more fluid motions. By rotating the 2 end curves, the overall loft became more dynamic and affected the overall form. By modifying the control points, the shape of the loft began to flow easier, not resulting in sharp edges folding into each other. The more lines increased the complexity of the geometry, resulting in a form that is not easy to modify.

Triangulation 2D

By exploring the types of patterns the delaunay, metaball and voronoi commands created, it was interesting to see how the layout of each patchwork could be easily modified by changing the count and seed inputs.

Triangulation 3D - Metaball

By extruding the metaball pattern in the Z axis, the threshold curves took on the form of a series of random columns. This idea was then pushed to adapt to a changing vector, and also capping the top of the extrusions.

3D Delaunay

The 3D delaunay edges created triangular shards that faced both up and down. When rotated to face horizontally they presented a very jagged and hostile form. When flattened, the form presents a rugged tessellated topography.

3D Voronoi

The 3d voronoi was the most enjoyable set of iterations as the process began with a cube full or geometries which were then deleted and de-constructed. This resulted in an abstract group of shapes that shared the same boundary.

2.1 BOX MORPHING

Box Morph

Experimenting with the box morph on the previous lofted surfaces proved to be an interesting exercise in pattering applied to a dynamic surface. Exploring the different forms used as a reference mesh showed how the form can transform from something permeable to a solid structure.

I especially found the XYZ de-construct vector interesting in changing the form of the 3D mesh in relation to its orientation on the lofted surface, creating a displacement that increased the variation and provided progressive options to explore.

2.2 MESH TRANSFORMATION

Mesh Transformation

Beginning with a basic form in Rhino, the smooth mesh command showed how edges can be transformed into something more aerodynamic and softer. I included a sphere to demonstrate how the surrounding forms began to blend into the centre and match the round form.

Further exploration into the mesh transform tools resulted in a faceted dome around the softened mesh, which was taken from the points inside the geometry linked to random points offset to create a geodesic link dome around the mesh.

Further manipulation of this point data from the mesh was explored using reference planes to develop extrusions, and then further smoothed these surfaces. Finally, spheres were placed on these points to show how the random points create an organic form.

2.3 MESH TRIANGULATION

Mesh Triangulation

Following on from the box morph, applying the delaunay edges to the point data gathered from the box morph surfaces created interesting folded shapes that were suspended in space.

Moving on to the 3D voronoi cells started with a wall of blocks that I subsequently removed sections from based on how close they were to the edge. After this, I applied the single voronoi cell that provided a much more coherent structure for a screen/wall as the forms were random.

2D delaunay edges formed within this point data created a surface that seemed to weave these triangulated edges between them. Applying the pipe command brought the geometry to life as a woven structure.

Using the facet dome tool similar to the 2d delaunay edges produced a rounded pipework that randomly interconnected with itself, almost appearing as if it could support its own weight under tension & compression.
