Women and the WorkforcePay equity or family equity?

Full-time women workers earnabout 75 percent the wages of fulltime men workers. Warringintellectual factions in the USpoint to different explanationsfor this wage gap: persistent paydiscrimination against women andjobs typically held by women on theone hand versus women's voluntarychoices to specialize in family careon the other.

If women are choosing familyresponsibilities over workadvancement, is the pay gapa public policy problem or shouldpublic policy focus on getting mento do more family work or just leavethings as they are? Dr. HeidiHartmann will review some ofthese arguments, providing herperspective on the policy gaps in theUS and the steps needed to achievegreater equity for women.
