“Extend, apply, and exchange knowledge between the University and society by applying scholarly expertise to community problems, by helping organizations and individuals respond to their changing environments, and by making the knowledge and resources created and preserved at the University accessible to the citizens of the state, the nation, and the world.”

The Budapest Open Access Initiative (BOAI) is a public statement of principles relating to open access to the research literature. It arose from a conference convened in Budapest by the Open Society Institute on December 1–2, 2001 to promote open access – at the time also known as Free Online Scholarship.
It was estimated that there were around 19,500 articles published OA in 2000, while
the number has grown to 191,850 articles in 2009.

Opportunities for Students to Publish, to work as Editors, and to Advocate
While we are expected to build on the achievement of past giants, without having access to their research we may not be aware of all that has come before us. We might not be able to include their work as a reference, and end up merely duplicating previously published findings, instead of investing our time and effort to explore cutting edge issues and produce new knowledge that would build upon their work and be helpful for all of humanity.
