Summer Arts Academy

July 9 – August 3, 2012

Join our dedicated and creative Faculty for four weeks of classes in the areas of visual art, Theatre, and Music, Tailored to students in grades 5-12. courses run monday through Friday from 8:30am-12:30pm. at Westwood Regional Jr./Sr. High School in the Visual and Performing Arts Wing. Music & Theatre Tuition: $100 per course

Band I Grades: 5-6 Instructors: Kurt Zimmermann & Kaitlin Michalowski Time: M-F, 8:30am-9:30am an instrumental ensemble made up of traditional band instruments. Band I will consist

of students with basic instrumental and music reading skills. Placement is by teacher

recommendation.

Band II Grades: 7-8 Instructors: Kurt Zimmermann & James Lawrence Time: M-F, 11:30am-12:30pm an accelerated instrumental ensemble program made up of traditional band

instruments. Band II will consist of students with heightened knowledge of their

instrument and music reading skills. Placement is by teacher recommendation.

Jazz I Grades: 5-6 Instructor: James Lawrence Time: M-F, 10:30am-11:30am Jazz I Is open to all instrument groups including guitar, bass, and piano. This course will

mainly focus on basics of improvisation, but will also explore important jazz composers

and various styles in jazz.

Jazz II Grades: 7-8 Instructor: James Lawrence Time: M-F, 8:30am-9:30am Jazz II Is open to all instrument groups including guitar, bass, and piano. Geared toward

more advanced students, the course will focus on various techniques used in

improvisation and will further explore various styles of jazz music in performance. We

will also focus on milestones in jazz: important people or things that helped shape this

important American art form.

Flute Ensemble Grades: 5-8 Instructor: Kaitlin Michalowski Time: M-F, 9:30am-10:30am flute players will have the chance to play many genres of flute music from across the

world, as well as learn how to play various kinds of flutes.

Woodwind Ensemble Grades: 5-8 Instructor: James Lawrence Time: M-F, 9:30am-10:30am Open to students of Clarinet and saxophone, the focus will be on playing repertoire

designed for the small ensemble and developing skills as an individual performer.

Percussion Ensemble Grades: 5-8 Instructor: Kurt Zimmermann Time: M-F, 10:30am-11:30am Open to students of percussion, the focus will be on playing repertoire designed for

the small ensemble and developing skills as an individual performer.

Brass Ensemble Grades: 5-8 Instructor: Kurt Zimmermann Time: M-F, 9:30am-10:30am Open to students of All Brass instruments, the focus will be on playing repertoire

designed for the small ensemble and developing skills as an individual performer.

Theatre Improv Grades: 5-8 Instructor: Austin Vallies Time: M-F, 11:30am-12:30pm Students will learn the fundamentals of improvisation technique and will engage in a

variety of improvisational exercises and scenes designed to develop their skills and

ability to create new characters.

Choir I Grades: 5-6 Instructor: Austin Vallies Time: M-F, 9:30am-10:30am Can’t get enough of Glee? Give Choir a try. This course will involve daily choir

rehearsals, music theory, group voice instruction and lots of fun!

Choir II Grades: 7-9 Instructor: Austin Vallies Time: M-F, 10:30am-11:30am Love to sing? Give Choir a try. This course will involve daily choir rehearsals, music

theory, group voice instruction, audition preparation, rhythm and lots of fun!

Westwood regional ringers Grades: 5-9 Instructor: Austin Vallies Time: M-f, 8:30am-9:30am Are you up for a musical challenge? Why not give handbells a try? Handbells are a

unique instrument in which each person has their own part on the musical staff. Ringers

will learn basic techniques of ringing and how to perform music of varied styles.

Beginning Orff Grades: 5-8 Instructor: Kaitlin Michalowski Time: M-F. 10:30am-11:30am; 11:30am-12:30pm Students will learn the basics of playing with our new Orff instruments. They will learn

how to play individually as well as part of an ensemble, and will learn various folk

songs to perform.

Visual Art Workshops Tuition for visual art courses

includes a fee for supplies

Ceramics studio Grades: 8-12 Instructor: Michelle Stoute Time: Thursdays (7/12, 7/19, 7/26, 8/2) 8:30Am -12:30pm Tuition: $160 Students will learn hand-building techniques in the creation of ceramic vessels,

including techniques in building pinch pots, Slab Construction, Coil, and Glazing.

Drawing from Observation Grades: 8-12 Instructor: Pamela Duffus Time: Wednesday 7/11 8:30Am -12:30pm Tuition: $40 Students will learn a variety of techniques essential to good drawing. They will work with an assortment of mediums including: pen and ink, pastel, and colored pencil.

Life Drawing Grades: 8-12 Instructor: Pamela Duffus Time: Wednesday 7/18 8:30Am -12:30pm Tuition: $40 Students will explore the human figure through a series of charcoal and pastel anatomy studies. The class will end with a detailed drawing of a model.

Watercolor Painting Grades: 8-12 Instructor: Pamela Duffus Time: Wednesday 7/23 8:30Am -12:30pm Tuition: $40 Students will learn tricks and techniques for painting with watercolors. Students will paint from observation as well as references. Experimentation with the medium will be encouraged.

Mixed Media Exploration Grades: 8-12 Instructor: Pamela Duffus Time: Wednesday 7/30, 8:30Am -12:30pm Tuition: $40 Acrylic paint, paper, colored pencil, wire, and more all come together in this workshop. Explore the creative process of art making while learning how to mix mediums and about trends in contemporary art.
