us, Quinn said. Althoughthey can see and hear prop-erly, their perception isdifferent.
I used to roll blackand white dice to see whowould get the higher num-ber, and discovered hecouldnt count that fast. Ofcourse, I didnt realize theblack and white of the diceis part of the perceptualproblem.
Quinn then discoveredthe book Reading by the
Colors by Helen Irlenthat seemed to bring allthe pieces of the puzzletogether for her son. Irlenis a noted author who haspublished several bookson children with autismand reading disorders, andhow improvements are tiedto the use of colors in thelearning process.
I cried reading herbook, because what shewrote was my son, Quinnsaid. The book she wrotehas to do with the colorspectrum in your brain.Sometimes there is a coloror a shade missing inyour spectrum when youare born, and perceivingbecomes difficult to a child. They cant express them-selves that they cant per-ceive what you are trying toshow them.
That is when Quinnwent back to the game shecreated with her husband,Ron, using scrapbookmaterials, and saw some-thing very important.Quinn discovered when shelooked at the game she hadcreated, many components
of it lacked color. So I started adding
color into the game, afterrealizing everything wasblack and white, Quinnsaid. I even started usingdifferent colored dice. Healways preferred the bluecolor, and I quickly noticedit made a difference in hisreaction. What I decidedwith the cards was to placethem inside colored filmcover. I would ask whathis favorite color was andthat would let me know theones where he could per-
ceive the words better thanothers.
She designed wordsand phrases for two gradelevels with one being forKindergartne through thirdgrade level and the otherfor fourth and fifth gradestudents. Quinn wrote toIrlen about reading herbook and what she discov-ered with the game. Theauthor so liked what shesaw in the game that shewrote a letter of endors-ment.
Quinn decided the game
needed a name and shedecided the perfect onethat fit was Time Out.
The name Time Outis when someone with thiscondition is learning to

It was something thatreally frustrated Quinn untilshe concluded somethingwas missing from the game.

read they often get frustrat-ed and they need a TimeOut, Quinn said. It givesthem a break and a chanceto regroup.
The concept is simpleas players move by the diceand must correctly spell thewords they come upon as
they move around a boardgoing from classroom toclassroom on their way tograduation. The object is tospell words correctly froma stop in classroom, butthe one place they want toavoid is a trip to the princi-pals office card.
If you get sent to theprincipals office you haveto spell two of three wordscorrectly to get out, butyou are given a principalscard, Quinn said. To getrid of it, you swap the cardwith hall passes you getwhen you roll doubles. One
hall pass can save you froma trip to the principalsoffice.
Some kids collect a lotof hall passes and you cangive them up at the end fora home room card.
Quinn said her sonhas improved in his read-
ing skills because of thegame, and feels it wouldbe an asset in schools tofind out if a child has thisperception problem. Shesaid Irlen said even coloredglasses can make a differ-ence for the child.
I think this would be
helpful for either schools,or at home for someonewho has a child withDyslexia, Quinn said.
Quinns hopes some
company will show aninterest in the game andstart to market it. She saysthe biggest satisfaction willbe knowing it is helpingothers avoid some of theproblems she experiencedwith her child.
If this could get one
child back in the classroomlearning all the hard workover these past few yearswould all be worth it,Quinn said.

Small busi-nesses that
take the timeto understand
the dangerswill find that
social mediacan be acustomer

PRECIS SYNDICATE
Small businesses needeffective, low-cost market-ing strategies, and toolslike Facebook and Twitterdeliver megahits for micro-budgets. Yet while manybusiness owners are beingadvised to engage custom-ers via social media, not allare informed of the risks.
Social network sites arefertile waters for Internet
pirates who troll for unsus-pecting victims, hoping tosteal data by planting mal-ware in the form of comput-er viruses, worms, Trojanhorses and spyware.
If you are a small-busi-ness owner, work for one orhope to become one, thesetips can help keep yourbusiness data secure:
nShare carefully.Clearly identify what kindof business informationshould be on social net-works. Dont post confiden-tial information, such as
financial information, pass-words or anything else youwould not want shared.
nGuide employees.Develop a social mediapolicy on the potential risksand ways to participatesafely. Include personal andprofessional best practices, and teach your people howto avoid scams. Remindemployees to limit personalcomments to their own per-sonal pages.
nBeware new twists.Thirty percent of all virusesthat infect computers origi-
nate from spam, targetingusers with seemingly legiti-mate posts, such as I justchecked how many peoplehave viewed my profile.Cyber thieves target easyvictims first: individualsand organizations thathavent adequately pro-tected their computers, networks, mobile devices,Wi-Fi and Internet connec-tions. Another technique islikejacking or clickjack-ing: When users click ona link, the site steals theirFacebook account andspreads the spam to alltheir contacts.
nDont automaticallyclick on URL links. If anoffer in a social post soundstoo good to be trueClickhere to win an iPaditprobably is.
nProtect your pass-words and privacy. Usingthe same password onevery site can easily exposeyour business to accounttakeover. If that passwordis hacked or leaked, hack-ers can access your othersite information. Instead, use different, strong alpha-
numeric (both letters andnumbers) passwords foreach of your social mediaaccounts and keep themregularly updated.
nStay current withcybersecurity. Keeping yourcomputer security updatedis the smartest way to ele-vate your defenses againstcybercrime. Deluxe SecuritySolutions is a good securityresource for current protec-tion products and servicessuch as McAfee AntiVirusPlus 2012, which defendsagainst online viruses, mal-
ware and spyware. ThroughDeluxe, you can subscribeto a fraud and identityprotection service such asEZShield Business IdentityRestoration. This serviceoffers a fully managed iden-tity process with certifiedresolution specialists toassist business owners
