And the Lord said, “Go.” And I said, “But I don’t want to.”

FOR ALL THAT HAS BEEN…
This weekend, a historical reality is happening – we are clos-ing three Catholic parishes here in the city of Kankakee. It is unprecedented, and it is something that will never be repeated again. For us, the Catholic faithful in Kankakee, who have been used to referring to our communities under these names – Saint Rose, Saint Teresa and Saint Martin – there will be some adjustment. But there is something that we have to be clear about. What is closing are our parishes, not our churches. The unit of a parish refers to the canonical norms that establish boundaries of juris-diction of a community of faith. It pertains to the ways that a community of believers is to be administered, served and identified by the diocese.
But the parish is not the church, nor the Church! On the one hand, the church (with a small “c”) is the building, the actual place where people gather to worship. As we close the three parishes, we still have the three churches of Saint Rose, Saint Teresa and Saint Martin. But even more importantly, the Church (with a capital “C”) remains. For as long as there are people who practice their faith here in our city, then the Church re-mains. The administration, boundaries, management, pastoring, identifi-cation and name may change, but the Church remains. As these parishes are closed, the boundaries are broken down and therefore, these previ-ously separate territories are now getting unified into a new entity, and the people of faith are now invited to a wider scope of community.
And so what will remain, even after the closing of these parishes? The life of faith of the Catholic community in Kankakee will continue, and hope-fully, will become even stronger. As the Church, we will continue to pray together, our services as a Church continue, especially the work of out-reach and evangelization. The specific funds of each of the parishes will now be used for the good of all parishioners combined together. One good example of this is that the million dollar educational fund of Saint Teresa will now be available for more young students in our community. Another example is that now we have two farms, which originally be-longed to Saint Rose and Saint Martin. Just like the early Christians put all their resources together, the resources of these three parishes will also remain and pulled together into one for the good of more people. Our mission to save souls remains. Our love of God remains. Jesus remains in His Church!
And what will be created out of this closing of parishes? A new parish is born out of the tearing down of the three parish boundaries. As we all know already, it will be called St. John Paul II Parish, a new way of admin-istering, serving, identifying and pastoring the faithful Catholics in our city. Now, we have three churches where anyone of us can worship. Now we have one budget, one fund, one office, one finance council, one parish council, that are now working toward one common goal to improve the life of the parish, serving everyone under the same pastoral ministry. And from all of these, we can only grow more!
Dear parishioners, one sentiment that I invite us all to share with is our gratitude for all that has been in our parishes. Many good things have taken place at Saint Rose Parish (founded in 1855), at Saint Teresa Par-ish (founded in 1949), and Saint Martin Parish (founded in 1950). These good things last forever in the Kingdom of God. They are not gone. They are here with us today, as we move forward into the future. From masses to sacraments celebrated, to the many souls touched and served, to many children who walked the doors of our schools and religious education programs. There are many beautiful memories. We thank God for them. For all that has been at these three parishes, may God be praised. For all that will be as the Church comes together under St. John Paul II Parish, may God be praised! God bless the Church!
Grateful for what has been and hopeful for what will be, Fr. Sunny Castillo
Padre Sunny Castillo

Mats For The Homeless We wish to thank all of our faithful volunteers who showed up every Wednesday all year. We still had at least 6 or 7 in attendance each week. That’s amazing and a testament to the generosity of our ladies. We are suspending this work of mercy for the time being until we can work out a new schedule and a new location. The last two mats are now being completed and we plan to take a photo of them and include it in next week’s bulletin. Please watch for it!

Upon his retirement, a man was given a set of golf clubs. He decided to give them a try, and signed up for lessons. The pro showed him how to stand and how to hold the club. “Now,” the pro instructed, “just hit the ball near that flag on the green.” The novice smacked the ball straight down the fairway, where it rolled to a stop just an inch from the hole. “Now what?” The shocked pro could barely speak. “Well, the idea is to hit the ball into the hole.” “Oh, sure,” the retiree huffed. “Now you tell me.”

What is the difference between a tax collector and a taxidermist? The taxidermist usually leaves the hide.
A teenager was speeding down the highway in a pack of other cars. But as he passed a speed trap, he got pulled over. “I know I was speeding, officer, but there were plenty of other cars going just as fast,” he protested. “Why am I the only one to get a ticket?” “Ever go fishing?” “Ummm, yeah,” the startled teen replied. “Ever catch all the fish?”

TWELVE SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJesus Christ was sent by the Father to purify us, to expiate our sins. We, however, have a part to play in our salvation. Through faith in Jesus, we put ourselves, body and soul, into God’s hands, humbling ourselves before him. Nothing else in the world is to take precedence over our relationship with God.
Scrip ProgramSt. John Paul II will be continuing with the Scrip Program. We will continue to sell it in the office and on the 1st and 3rd Sunday’s before and after Mass. Prayer for the Unification of the Catholic Churches in Kankakee
Heavenly Father, whose hands brought forth all that exists in this wide and beautiful universe.
It is by Your creative love that we are here today, to accomplish Your plan for us, Your Church.
During this time of fear and uncertainty, grant us trust and confident hope.
Open our small-mindedness to the bigger picture of your wisdom and help us to be generous and
compassionate during this time of change and transition.
Your Son, Jesus Christ, the foundation of our Church, asked You to make His people one,
as You are One with Him and the Holy Spirit. Guide us now to be One People of the same
Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church here in Kankakee. May all that we do now, bless our children
and grandchildren and all the future faithful of our community.
Come, O Holy Spirit, guide and inspire us. Saint Therese, Saint Rose and Saint Martin, pray for us.
Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us. Saint John Paul II, pray for us.
Sunday, June 25, 2017 “If someone we know has received a prenatal diagnosis, let us ask the Holy Spirit to work through us. May the families of these little children be strengthened and
comforted by our affirmation of the truth that their child’s life-however long or short-is worth living.” Supporting Families Who Receive a Prenatal Diagnosis USCCB Secretariat of Pro-Life Activities
Sunday, June 25, 2017
