RISK IS LOW The risk to southwest Nebraska residents becoming ill with the new coronavirus is low. Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department is provided with up-to-date information which is available to help peo-ple stay informed. “We have received a few questions regarding the coronavirus,” states Kathie Skeen, Emergency Planning Coordinator for Southwest Nebraska Public Health Department. “It is important to keep southwest Nebraskans informed and up to date.” As of Febru-ary 4, 2020, there were 11 confirmed cases in the United States, but none in Nebraska or the surrounding states. According to health offi-cials, the best way to prevent infection is to avoid being exposed to this virus. There are simple everyday preventive actions to help pre-vent the spread of respiratory viruses. The 2019 novel coronavirus (2019 nCoV) is a new virus that causes respiratory (breathing) illness. This virus was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak of respiratory illness that began in December in Wuhan, China. Pa-tients with 2019-nCoV have reportedly had mild to severe respira-tory illness with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. There is currently no vaccine to protect against 2019-nCoV.
ADDING MORE SENATORS Supporters say adding more senators to the Nebraska Legislature will help represent constituents better, while opponents say other changes should come first. Right now, the Legislature comprises 49 state senators – roughly one for every 40,000 Nebraskans. Sen. Jim Scheer, speaker of the Legislature, is sponsoring a constitutional amendment to allow up to 55 state senators. Scheer says when the one-house Unicameral began, in 1937, there were 43 senators, or one for every 27,000 Nebraskans at that time. When that number increased to 49 in the 1960s, there was one for about every 30,000 people. Scheer said his proposal won’t solve all the problems with legislative districts – for example, it wouldn’t shrink the huge legisla-tive districts in western Nebraska, where population loss has forced senators to represent larger and larger areas. “It just gives a little better representation to those constituents and all of our 49 districts or whatever number you choose to utilize,” Scheer said. Because the proposal is a constitutional amendment, voters would have to ap-prove it.
NEW TYPE OF PERSONAL IDENTIFICATION If you’re flying domestically on or after Oct 1, 2020, you may need a new type of personal identification, says AAA. This form of ID or license is known as the Real ID, and it requires more documentation to obtain than a standard driver’s license. Not everyone will need a Real ID. You won’t need it for driving or voting, but you will need it for flying commercially, or visiting a military base, nuclear facility or federal building that requires identification. If you don’t have a Real ID by Oct. l, you can use alternative IDs, such as a passport, passport card, permanent resident card or military ID. An enhanced driver’s license, issued by some states, is also acceptable. Most Nebraskans have the real ID. Want to check to see whether your current driver’s license is compliant? Real IDs generally have a star at the top of the card. If you have questions, visit your local Department of Motor Ve-hicles office.
