Ford’s engine design excellencereceived some notice when Wards-Auto placed two Ford engines – the2.7L Twin Turbo DOHC V6 (Ford F-150) and the 5.0L DOHC V8 (FordMustang GT) – on its 2018Wards 10Best Engines list.
WardsAuto editors chose thewinners after spending Octoberand November evaluating 32 en-gines and electric propulsionsystems during routine com-mutes in metro Detroit. It’s the24th year for Wards 10 Best En-
gines, said Drew Winter, Wardssenior content director.“We’re happy to recognize
great engines in luxury cars, butwe’re thrilled to see so manyhigh-volume automakers whosevehicles are more affordable foraverage Americans deliveringtruly outstanding powertrains,”said Winter. It’s been five years since an en-

DETROIT (AP) – An 800-foot-tall (244-meter) centerpiece iscoming to Detroit’s resurgentdowntown as the city continuesto build momentum about threeyears after exiting the largestmunicipal bankruptcy in U.S. his-tory.The 58-story building dominat-
ing the local skyline will rise onthe site of the iconic J.L. Hudsondepartment store, whose 1983closing epitomized Detroit’s eco-nomic downfall.“When we lost Hudson’s, it
symbolized how far Detroit hadfallen,” Bedrock Detroit real es-tate founder Dan Gilbert saidDec. 14 during a ceremonialgroundbreaking for the newbuilding. “When it was implodedin 1998, it was a very sad day fora lot of people.”But the bad times for down-
town appear to be largely over.Bedrock Detroit’s $900 million,two-building project will includea 58-story residential tower and12-floor building for retail andconference space. Up to 450 resi-dential units can be built in thetower. It is one of four projects repre-
senting a $2.1 billion investmentin downtown by the Detroit-based commercial real estatefirm. Altogether, the projects areexpected to create up to 24,000jobs in a city that desperatelyneeds them and generate $673million in new tax revenue.Mayor Mike Duggan’s office

Macomb County,MSU Offer NewHealth ClassesThe past and future met last
week in Dallas with the introduc-tion of the next-generationChevrolet Silverado at an eventcelebrating the first 100 years ofChevy Trucks. Many in atten-dance were Chevy Truck Leg-ends members, some of thebrand’s most passionate owners.“Our owners’ passion for
Chevrolet trucks is truly hum-bling,” said Alan Batey, presidentof GM North America, and globalhead of Chevrolet. “Many of ourowners depend on their trucksfor work and play, personalizetheir trucks in astonishing waysand pass their loyalty for ChevyTrucks down from generation togeneration.“For the Chevy Truck Centen-
nial, we wanted to recognize thecustomers who have madeChevrolet part of their lives, andhave them help kick off the next100 years of Chevy Trucks.”The 2019 Silverado 1500 is all
new from the ground up, Bateysaid, and leverages Chevrolet’sexperience building more than 85million dependable, long-lastingpickups. It also reflects feedbackfrom more than 7,000 people onwhat they wanted in their next
truck – the most customer re-search in the company’s history.“The 2019 Silverado’s strong,
modern design advances Chevro-let’s history of industry-leadingpickup design,” Batey said.“It’s a legacy built on decades
of experience with models suchas the Advance Design trucks ofthe 1950s and the C/K series ofthe 1960s. Those trucks set thestandard for pickup design intheir eras, and currently aresome of the most coveted vin-tage trucks on the market.“The next-generation Silverado
is poised to change the face oftrucks again, with a break-through design that is unmistak-ably Chevrolet.”The new Silverado also deliv-
ers improved capability and per-formance, said GM spokesmanMonte Doran. For example, ahigher-grade alloy is used in theroll-formed, high-strength-steelbed floor, contributing to a bedthat is more functional andlighter weight. This use of mixed materials
and advanced manufacturing isevident throughout the Silvera-do, resulting in a significant re-duction in total vehicle weight
and improved performance inmany measures, Doran said.As no two truck customers are
alike, the next-gen Silverado willoffer an expanded range of mod-els, more engine/transmissioncombinations and more technol-ogy and convenience features tohelp customers find their idealtruck. The new Silverado LT Trailboss
is one of eight 2019 Silveradomodels, Doran said. It integrates
the off-road equipment of the Z71package as well as a two-inchsuspension lift. Unlike aftermar-ket lift kits, the Trailboss suspen-sion is fully tested, validated andwarrantied by Chevrolet. The 2019 Silverado will make
its public debut in January at theNorth American InternationalAuto Show in Detroit, exactly 100years after the first Chevrolettrucks were delivered to cus-tomers, Doran said.

programs targeting a number ofcity neighborhoods, but Detroit’sgrowth is most evident in greaterdowntown, where office spacenow is limited and availableapartments are tough to comeby.A ribbon-cutting was held in
August for an $860 million sportscomplex just north of downtown. The 20,000-seat Little CaesarsArena is the new home of the De-troit Red Wings and Pistons. Itwill anchor a 50-block neighbor-hood of offices, apartments, restaurants and shops.A 6.6-mile-long light rail system
launched earlier this year alongWoodward Avenue, downtown’smain business thoroughfare.Software maker Microsoft
announced in February that itplans to move its MichiganMicrosoft Technology Centernext year from the suburbs todowntown. In 2016, Ally Financialopened new offices downtownthat the financial services com-pany said eventually would beoccupied by more than 1,500 em-ployees and contractors.“Bedrock building on the Hud-
son’s site will be an importantaddition to the community andthe vitality and prosperity ofdowntown,” said John Mogk, aWayne State University law pro-fessor whose work has includedpolicy on economic developmentissues.“It will act as an important cen-
terpiece for continuing the over-all downtown development . . .but much more has to be donefor the entire city to feel a resur-gence.”He said much work remains for
a city where many residents arestill poor.Detroit’s unemployment rate
was about 8 percent in April, yetfar below the more than 18 per-cent unemployment rate duringthe city’s 2013 bankruptcy filing. The city’s 2016 poverty rate
was just over 35 percent – thehighest among the nation’s 20largest cities and more than dou-
ble the national poverty of 14percent. A family of four is con-sidered living in poverty if its an-nual earnings are less than$24,563.Downtown construction proj-
ects such as the work at the Hud-son’s site can help change that, some say.“What a shame that anybody
should be unemployed in Detroitwhen we have a need for skilledtrades,” Gilbert said.“We like to say Detroit is locat-
ed at the intersection of muscleand brains. We need brains tosort this all out . . . somebodystill has to build stuff. We stillneed muscle.”While Bedrock’s new building
would be Detroit’s tallest, risingabove the 727-foot RenaissanceCenter along the city’s riverfront,it still would be far shorter thansome other U.S. towers. One World Trade Center in
New York measures 1,776 feet.Chicago’s Willis Tower hits 1,451feet, while the Empire StateBuilding in New York climbs to1,250 feet.Although the 25-story Hud-
son’s building was once thenation’s tallest department store,it measured only about 400 feet.It was far more famous for whatwas inside. When Detroit was humming
along and leading the nation incar production, the store waswhere auto executives and as-sembly line workers shopped. From household goods to cloth-ing and furs and many things inbetween, it was a primary down-town destination. There were 50 display win-
dows, 12,000 employees and100,000 customers per day. Butas shopping tastes shifted to ex-
pansive suburban malls and De-troit’s population tumbled bymore than 600,000 people be-tween the 1950s and 1980, Hud-son’s lost its luster.“Building something of signifi-
cant magnitude on the old sitewill provide a good deal of goodfeelings by older generations,”Mogk said.
Oakland County Executive L.Brooks Patterson called it a“huge magnet for people like mewho grew up in Detroit.” He andhis brother would ride a city busdowntown and play tag on theHudson’s escalators.“I think that putting up this glo-
rious glass building is a fittingsuccession,” Patterson said.
Macomb County Public WorksCommissioner Candice Millerhas launched an investigationinto two hot spots for E. coli inWarren.Responding to a citizen’s com-
plaint, her office has found twolocations in that city where it isbelieved that sanitary sewage isentering county storm drainsthat ultimately empty in to LakeSt. Clair, said county spokesmanJohn Cwikla. The E. coli bacteria is entering
the county drains from two city-owned local pipes. In a neighbor-hood between Schoenherr andBunert, south of 14 Mile Road;and along the east side ofSchoenherr, immediately north
of I-696, Cwikla said. Both sitestested positive for the bacteria, which is found in human and ani-mal waste. The test results were literally
off the chart -- showing more E.coli than that test was able tocount. The maximum test countis approximately 2,400 count ofE. coli per milliliter, Cwikla said.A count of 300 is enough to
close a beach. Both sites testedoff the chart.“We are doing a comprehen-
sive inspection of drains all overMacomb County because there isno one single source of pollutionand contaminants. As we inspectdrains, we are looking at the con-dition of the pipe if it is an en-closed drain, and running sam-ples to make sure there are no il-licit connections – in otherwords, some type of sanitarysewerage that should not be in astorm drain.“This is what we have found in
these two locations and we havenotified city officials in Warrenand they have assured us theywill work with us to identify thepoint source of their sewer pipewhich is somehow entering thecounty storm sewer,” Miller said. The MCPW will be following up
with the city to ensure correctiveaction is taken. The investigation began in late
November after a local residentreported seeing a sheen on theRed Run near where the Schoen-herr Relief Drain empties in tothe creek, just north of 14 MileRoad, west of Schoenherr Road,Cwikla said. Since that time, thecounty has been collecting sam-ples from the Schoenherr ReliefDrain and other connecting un-derground storm sewers, tryingto find the source. The county isable to test the samples in a labat its Chapaton Pump Station inSt. Clair Shores. The MCPW had previously
scheduled the Schoenherr ReliefDrain for a major structural andillicit connection inspection, slat-ed to begin in early 2018.“Obviously, when we received
this report of a sheen on the RedRun, we accelerated things. Wewill still be conducting additionaltesting and conduct a structuralreview of the Schoenherr Relief, but when we find something likethis, we’re not going to wait toget it fixed," Miller said. “Whenwe find it, we fix it.”The MCPW collected and test-
ed samples from more than 20locations along the drain in aneffort to isolate the source.Crews found a 36-inch diametercity pipe at the location near 14Mile Road and a 72-inch diametercity pipe at the location nearI-696. Water from both pipes isentering into the MCPW with thehigh E. coli counts, meaning thesource is somewhere in the War-ren pipes. The Schoenherr Relief Drain
was constructed back in the ear-ly 1950s, Cwikla said.It runs roughly along Schoen-
herr Road from 9 Mile Road tothe Red Run, just north of 14 MileRoad. One of the hot spots was found
on the 14 Mile Schoenherr ReliefDrain, which runs east-westalong 14 Mile Road, Cwikla said.

While kept in a produce market, this truck is for display purposes only. This 1916 GMC Model 31 truck is on display in Warren.
Talk about going back to yourroots. What better place to dis-play a 100-year-old pickup truckthan in a produce market? One of the main uses of the
early pickup trucks was to deliv-er groceries, said Sharon Katz, owner of the Produce Palace In-ternational in Warren who hasjust put a fully-restored 1916GMC Model 31 on display.“We opened up in 1995,” Katz
said. “My late husband, Sam, anda partner ran the store, and oneof the things the partner boughtwas an old 1916 GMC Model 31pickup truck. It was on displayfor many years and this was thekind of truck that grocery storesused to deliver groceries to cus-tomers.”
The truck was restored, but astime went on, Katz said, the truckwas put away in a backroom andwas ignored. As a result, it fell in-to disrepair. That did not pleaseKatz.“I felt this truck was a real
piece of history,” Katz said. “Ithad become neglected and I real-ly felt that it had been mishan-dled. So I decided to do some-thing about it.“I hired a carpenter familiar
with the truck. His name is LeoBiela and he was a friend of myhusband.”One of the things Katz liked
about the truck was that woodwas heavily used in its body.“Can you imagine getting into
an accident with a truck with a
wood body?” Katz said. “By thetime Leo started working on thetruck, it looked like a junkyardspecial. He really worked hard onthe truck. It now looks brandnew.”Biela said that he was able to
find a lot of the parts needed at acouple of Grosse Pointe estatesales. But not all the parts areoriginal.“I ordered the wood from a
place in Lansing,” Biela said. “Ithen worked on the wood and or-dered other parts that were thenmanufactured at Classic Weldingin Warren.“It took a total of three months
to do all the restoration workonce we got started on the proj-ect in early September. We were
able to immediately put the new-ly-restored truck on display inthe store just after Thanksgiv-ing.”Produce Palace store manager
Bob Montie said that the truckhas attracted a lot of attentionfrom members of the public whohave seen it. This time, the storehas taken efforts to protect thetruck from neglect.“We had to put it behind
ropes,” Montie said. “We’reproud of it, but remember, it’sstill 100 years old. We haven’theard from anyone at GM yetabout the truck, but we’re hopingpeople at the Tech Center willhear about it and stop by to seewhat GM was doing a centuryago.”

In this holiday season, it’s alwaysnice to remember those who areless fortunate, and the FCA Foun-dation has done exactly that. The FCA Foundation, the chari-
table arm of North Americanautomaker FCA, last week gave a$500,000 grant to United Way forSoutheastern Michigan. The grant will help United Way
implement two primary strate-gies to ensure that more childrenhave access to and participate inchild nutrition programsthroughout the school year andduring the summer, said FCAFoundation spokesman KevinFrazier.First, the FCA Foundation grant
will enable United Way to providepartner organizations (commu-nity groups and schools) with thefunds and technical assistanceneeded to run and expand MeetUp and Eat Up summer mealsprograms, Frazier said.Additionally, the grant will sup-
port United Way’s efforts to im-plement robust community en-gagement, marketing andcanvassing strategies to ensurethat children and families, schooladministrators and the publicknow about both the Meet Up andEat Up summer program and theSchool Breakfast Program avail-able each school day.“FCA US cares deeply about
our communities and respectsUnited Way for the work theydo. In no uncertain terms,United Way is committed to im-proving lives,” said Brian Harlow, head of Manufacturing, NorthAmerica and FCA US United Wayco-chair.“By focusing on key areas in-
cluding education, economicprosperity and health, UnitedWay works to connect corpora-tions, nonprofits and govern-ment agencies to tackle prob-lems as a team, therefore ampli-
fying what no singular organiza-tion could do alone.”Raising awareness about the
free food programs remains a pri-ority to United Way, Harlow said.During the school year, nearly300,000 children in Macomb,Oakland and Wayne countiesqualify for either free or reduced-price meals.Yet, of those eligible children,
only about 17 percent participatein the free summer meals pro-gram Meet Up and Eat Up. In re-sponse, FCA US sponsored fiveUnited Way block parties thissummer to increase awarenessand attendance of the Meet Upand Eat Up program.“We are grateful for strategic
partners like FCA US for help-ing us support families through-out the tri-county,” said TanyaHeidelberg Yopp, interim CEO,United Way for SoutheasternMichigan.“With partnerships that reach
more than 700 sites, this signifi-cant grant will help further ourefforts for greater impact so thatchildren continue to have accessto this valuable free meals pro-gram each summer.”According to data from the
Michigan Department of Educa-tion, Harlow said the total num-ber of summer meals served in2016 in Wayne, Oakland and Ma-comb counties was 1,210,049.All donations to United Way
this year count toward its over-reaching 2016-18 Annual Commu-nity Giving goal of $100 million, set by Fiat Chrysler AutomobilesCEO Sergio Marchionne, whoalso serves as United Way Cam-paign chair.
United Way for SoutheasternMichigan mobilizes the caringpower of Macomb, Oakland andWayne counties to improve livesin measurable and lasting waysthroughout the region, Fraziersaid. The organization is led by a
diverse group of volunteersfrom business, labor, govern-ment, human services, edu-cation and the community,Frazier said.

DETROIT (AP) – Ford MotorCo. is promising to roll out morethan 50 new vehicles in Chinaover the next eight years includ-ing 15 powered by electricity asit restructures its business andresponds to a government pushfor cleaner air by making all newvehicles electric. The automaker, currently a
small player in the world’slargest auto market, announced
the ambitious plan recently inShanghai. In addition to the Ford and Lin-
coln brand electric vehicles, thecompany said a new Zotye-Fordjoint venture will sell a new lineof affordable vehicles that run onbatteries. The move comes as Ford tries
to become more competitiveglobally under new CEO JimHackett. In October, the compa-ny announced plans to cut $14billion in costs, drop some carmodels and focus resources on
trucks, SUVs and electric vehi-cles.It’s also a sign that, unlike rival
General Motors, Ford has missedout on the past opportunities togrow substantially in China, saidJeff Schuster, senior vice presi-dent of forecasting for the LMCAutomotive consulting firm.“China is extremely importantand I think this is an acknowl-edgement of maybe some previ-ous missteps of investment inChina for Ford,” he said. Here’s what you need to know
about Ford’s plan:• Foreign and domestic auto-
makers in China sold 24.4 millioncars, minivans and sport-utilityvehicles in China last year. LMCforecasts only 1-2 percent growththis year because part of a tax in-centive expired at the end of lastyear, forcing buyers to act in2017. Schuster says annualgrowth should settle in in the 3percent to 4 percent range in fu-ture years.• General Motors Co. and
Volkswagen AG vie for the title oflargest automaker in China. GMsold 383,000 vehicles in Octobercompared with Ford’s 150,000.• In September, China joined
France and Britain in announcingplans to end sales of gasolineand diesel cars. It’s developing atimetable to end production oftraditional fuel cars and no datehas been set for the change toelectrics.• Schuster says it’s not too
late for the company to increasesales in China, where growth isexpected to outpace other devel-oped nations.• Ford says it will assemble
five additional vehicles in Chinafor customers there, includinga Lincoln SUV and Ford’s firstglobal all-electric SUV.

The website says fully elec-tric vehicles, plug-in recharge-able hybrids and traditional gas-electric hybrids will make up 4.4percent of the market. That’s upfrom an estimated 3.2 percentthis year.Edmunds expects automakers

says the average price for self-serve regular unleaded gasolinewas about $2.45 per gallon.Prices are about 19 cents morethan at the same point last year.Michigan’s lowest average
price was about $2.37 per gallonin the Traverse City area. The highest was about $2.62
per gallon in the Marquette area.It was the third consecutive
week that the Marquette areahad the highest average in thestate. The Detroit-area’s average
price dropped 3 cents to $2.47per gallon.AAA Michigan surveys daily
fuel prices at 2,800 gas stationsacross the state to obtain thesenumbers.

ciency fronts, with EPA driving-range ratings of 33 miles in elec-tric-only mode, and 570 totalmiles.“We knew this was a special
project when we were asked todevelop the most fuel-efficientminivan ever,” says Bob Lee,head of Engine Powertrain andElectrified Propulsion SystemsEngineering, FCA – North Ameri-ca. “Receiving this award, espe-cially for the second time, vali-dates our early conviction – asdo reports from our customers.”FCA has engaged 100 Pacifica
Hybrid customers who haveagreed to participate in monthlyownership-experience surveysover a two-year period, Maynesaid. To date, 47 percent of re-spondents report more drivingrange than expected, with 22 per-cent saying they have observed“much more.”
Wards 10 Best Engines judgeDrew Winter echoes this satisfac-tion.“The Pacifica Hybrid is a big,
seven-passenger plug-in hybridminivan with all the bells andwhistles families have come toadore, but with 33 miles of fullelectric range and levels of fuelefficiency unimaginable just afew short years ago,” said Winter, senior content director at Ward-sAuto. “With most owners usingtheir minivans to run errandsand occasionally take a long-dis-tance drive, the Chrysler PacificaHybrid is a stroke of genius.”Central to the vehicle’s per-
formance is its eFlite electricallyvariable transmission, Lee said.An in-house FCA innovation, itwas developed by a team of engi-neers assigned exclusively to thetask of delivering a high-efficien-cy driving experience that re-tains the functionality customersexpect from minivans.
Conventional electrificationschemes dedicate one motor toserve as a generator and a sec-ond motor, usually much larger,to deliver torque to the wheels,Lee said. The eFlite gearbox usesa one-way clutch that enablesthe motor typically used only asa generator, to power the wheels, depending on driving conditions. The result is increased efficien-
cy, refinement, and improvedcomponent packaging. Thelifeblood of the 2018 Pacifica Hy-brid is its 16-kWh lithium-ion bat-tery pack, which is located underthe second-row floor, Lee said.Recharging can take as little astwo hours using an optional 240-volt (Level 2) charger, availablefrom Mopar through dealers. When the battery’s energy is
depleted to a certain threshold, the Pacifica Hybrid becomes a
part-time electric vehicle, like aconventional hybrid, to maxi-mize energy and efficiency, Leesaid. Power to the wheels is sup-plied by the electric drive systemor helped by a specially adaptedversion of the gasoline-poweredPentastar 3.6-liter V6, which wasnamed one of Wards 10 Best En-gines in 2011, 2012 and 2013.“Imagine the convenience that
comes with plugging in at home, instead of stopping at the gasstation once or twice a week,”says Tim Kuniskis, head of Pas-senger Car Brands – Dodge, SRT,Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – NorthAmerica.“Now combine that with the
capacity to transport up to sevenpeople in superior comfort. Thatmakes the 2018 Chrysler Pacificaminivan a mobility solution likeno other.”

up truck has landed on the Wards10 Best Engines list, Winter said.“Cars seem to have the upper
hand in our competition becausethey’re lighter, quicker off theline and more fuel-efficient,” Win-ter said.“This year was different. Ford
loaned us the redesigned 325-hptwin-turbo 2.7L EcoBoost V6 inthe F-150, and our staff wasblown away by its vibration-freeidle, its nearly imperceptiblestop/start system and especiallyits tomb-like silence. We’ve beenin luxury cars that aren’t thisquiet.“Judging by its relatively small
displacement, one might assumethis engine, using both directand port fuel injection, is merelyan adequate offering within theF-150 lineup. Not true. It will snapyour head back if you stomp on
the gas at just about any speed. No wonder the 2.7L is now themost popular engine in Ameri-ca’s most popular pickup truck.”Winter and his fellow judges
also had strong things to sayabout the redesigned 5.0L V8 inthe Mustang GT. “This engineshares some of its voodoo withthe Shelby GT350’s 5.2L V8 thatmade our list two years ago, such as lightweight spray-incylinder liners,” he said. The 5.0L now adds direct fuel
injection to existing port deliv-ery and has a higher (7,500-rpm)redline, reinforced crankshaftand bumped-up compression ra-tio (12.0:1), enabling 460 hp and420 lb.-ft. of torque, Winter said.Paired to a new 10-speed auto-
matic transmission, this musclecar is “shockingly efficient assome of our editors routinelytopped 24 mpg despite ourheavy-pedal testing.”
