2012 Stirs Speculation

This rare October snowstorm raged from West Virginia to Maine, leaving 1.6 million homes without power. Schools were closed and streets were littered with toppled trees. Poor road conditions claimed 13 lives, and Halloween was even postponed in count-

less towns!

The infamous 5.9 quake that shook the East Coast on August 23, 2011 was a part of the Ramapo Fault

System. Until this August, the largest quake in the region clocked in at 4.8, in 1875. Although most

major earthquakes occur on the tectonic belt takes in California, Indonesia, and Japan, smaller danger

zones are scattered around the Eastern United States. In fact, 39 of the 50 states have moderate to

high seismic hazard risks.

With 120 mile per hour whirlwinds, Hurricane Irene caused a full week of meteorological mayhem in late

August of 2011. Racking up $10.1 billion in damage and 49 fatalities, Irene terrorized Caribbean Islands

like Turks and Caicos, along with U.S. East Coast.
