MLR Quiet Achiever Award
Well it’s that time of the year where we start thinking about MLR club awards.
You may have seen nomination forms for the MLR Quiet Achiever Award in the newsletters during
the year. If you think you know of someone who fits the bill nominate them.
The Quiet Achievers Award acknowledges just how much they are valued and appreciated and
recognises their important, often behind the scenes, contribution to the fabric of the Club. This is an
award that is presented to those special people who go out of their way to do things for others, not
because they want recognition but because it comes from their heart to give and serve others. Quiet
achiever may contribute in numerous ways including:
• Always friendly and supportive consistently helping others
• Continued fundraising efforts
• Volunteer efforts for the betterment of the Club
• Behind the scenes support
So over to you… There is a nomination form in this newsletter. Nominations should be forwarded to
the MLR Secretary at [email protected] or hand deliver to Jo at a meeting by the
end of Feb 2018

NGARKAT CONSERVATION PARK INTERCLUB WORKING BEE 24th & 25th March 2018
WHAT: Each year a group of volunteers from FWDSA affiliated clubs meet at the Ngarkat CP to undertake a number of tasks that have been developed in conjunction with the Senior Ranger, Natural Resources (SA Murray-Darling Basin, DEWNR) from Lameroo. These tasks assist DEWNR in maintaining, sustaining and enhancing the Ngarkat CP for all park visitors. This year the work to be undertaken is again generally on or near the one-way and two-way section of the Ngarkat CP Border Track and includes trail marking, fencing (repair, replacement or installation), fireplace & rubbish clean-up, signage, vegetation trimming and painting. DEWNR will be providing materials and specialist tools needed for the work and the volunteers will need to provide all the basic hand tools and labour. The one-way section of the Border Track is closed to public traffic until the first weekend of April and therefore will be closed to public traffic during the working bee.
WHEN: Weekend of 24th & 25th March 2018. Work starts at 9am on the Saturday, but you may setup camp on the afternoon or evening of the preceding Friday.
WHERE: Meet at the Ngarkat CP Pine Hut Soak campground (S35º 25’ 24.7” E140º 52’ 46.2”). See the map overleaf. Overflow if necessary to the nearby Nanam Well and Cox’s Windmill campgrounds.
Directions: Heading south from Tailem Bend cross the railway overpass, turn left onto the Mallee Highway; drive through Lameroo, Parilla and past the T-Junction to Bordertown (do not turn), then after ~1.9km turn right on to Rosy Pine Road (Ngarkat Park sign at this point), continue south for ~14.7 km to the Park Entrance (there may be one or two gates near the end of this road). 250m on from the Park Entrance is the visitor information shelter and a further 70m is the turn left to the adjacent Pine Hut Soak campground.
WHAT TO BRING: Camping: Camper trailers and caravans can be accommodated. The Pine Hut Soak campground has
one long drop toilet but you need to bring everything else (water, food, shelter). Please note that the working bee dates will still be in fire danger season so the "camp fire" will need to be artificial (a gas stove will be OK).
Equipment: Tools Post hole digging tools, pruners, loppers, bow saw, handsaw, shovel, rake, hand tools,
battery powered electric drill / angle grinder with a range of drill sizes and spade bits. UHF In car and handheld UHF radios will be useful, Channel 16 will be used initially. Personal Working gloves and footwear, drinking water, sun protection (hat, long sleeves, long
pants, sun screen). Bring high visibility vests or clothing and possibly share them with your fellow workers.

Club Night
RFDS Operations Centre (Adelaide Airport)
21 Feb 2018

Damn…everyone is here… guess I’m writing the trip report. (Thanks traffic and detour around harbour town). Wow, nice facility.
The first MLR Club night activity for 2018 was a visit to the new and very flash RFDS Operations
facility located at the beach end of the Adelaide airport. The trip was very well attended with 20
members showing up (thankyou), and all bar one before me (see first sentence). After signing the
trip sheet, our host Kristen, who many of you would have seen at our Christmas meeting in Dec
played tour guide.
The first thing everyone noticed, well hard not to really given the size, was a large screen with a map
of Australia displayed and real time tracking of all the RFDS aircraft currently in the air. I think I
counted at least a dozen aircraft with most of the activity in Queensland and WA. For those who are
interested you can actually see the feed on the RFDS website.
Kristen then explained about the facility, when it was built and how it was fully paid for by
donations, somewhere in the vicinity of $14M I think. Kristen took us into the hangar and told us
about the aircraft and the RFDS operations. Far too much information for me to remember. Some
facts I do recall; there are around 63 aircraft operating across Australia, six of which are based out of
Adelaide. The planes in Adelaide are PC12s and cost circa $7M each all publically funded. A new jet
aircraft for longer haul flights is expected to be delivered in the near future. Keep an eye on the TV
news for that one. Some operating costs e.g. staff salaries and fuel are supported by the government
otherwise the operation runs on donations, a lot of donations. As a result the PR machine is quite
extensive and well versed.

One thing I didn’t realise is that the flights don’t routinely carry doctors. A typical crew for a call out is a pilot and nurse. If additional medical support is required a paramedic from the medical flight (choppers) will usually jump on board. Only on the odd occasion will a doctor actually attend. The RFDS also run remote area clinics where they set up shop for a short period to provide health care to remote communities.
After looking at the hangar we had a quick view of the patient transfer area which is like a small emergency department. We couldn’t stay long in this area as a flight arrived shortly after with a patient (RFDS in action). So, we headed upstairs to check out the modern office space, common areas and balcony that provides a great view out across the entire airport. The first thing I thought of was this would be a great place to hold a party.
I was impressed with the facility and after some closing remarks we said our farewells. 12 of us then headed to the Watermark Hotel in Glenelg for a pub meal. I must confess, from my point of view the company was good but my meal was nothing special, as they say, it filled a hole.
Final note - the facility isn’t open to the general public for tours. Tours are provided to groups or organisations that support the RFDS fundraising efforts. I think we as a Club can pat ourselves on the back to be considered in this group. If you are really keen and financial, you can become a major contributor and even get your logo put on an aircraft.
Anyway, a big thankyou to Kristen for inviting us to the facility, a big thankyou to all those who work in the RFDS, a big thankyou to all who donate and assist in fundraising efforts for the RFDS. It certainly was good to see how the money was spent/well spent.
More photos to follow (thanks Deb)
