Mark D. Puterbaugh, Information Systems LibrarianWarner Memorial Library, Eastern University
The Original VBI ProjectObjectives:
1. To provide instruction and information to students and faculty in the use of the research resources available in Eastern University's Warner Memorial Library within a virtual 3-D environment.
2. To provide instruction and information in the use of web-based research databases and other resources available in the Warner Library.
Phase I
• Started in 1999• Created a virtual tour of the library and
its resources using Activeworlds Education Universe.
• The virtual world presented a walk-through map of the library highlighting areas important to the Eastern University's community.
See:http://edu.activeworlds.com/
Phase II
Designated certain locations in the virtual world to interactively present bibliographic instruction in selected subject areas.
Also, VBI included web-based information describing the use of online databases.
Phase IIIVirtual Bibliographic Instruction
• Live chat (with patrons)• Voice chat (VOIP)• Bots (Automated Assistants)• Etc.
Final phase implemented all the tools offered by the virtual environment.
Success minimized by staffing issues!!!!!
PHASE IV
The New Campus Commons
Online Virtual Community
Imagine a world where my library really is My Library. The user has control over how their version of the library is presented. Then imagine a world where you can present real time multimedia versions of resources at the exact moment when needed, without having to go to a separate device to access them. They are all contained within the environment where you are working. Inside the virtual library you are immersed in all its offerings.

The New Campus Commons
Phase IV was implemented to focus on the social aspects of the virtual 3-D world.
Major change was to open the world for others to build.
Students, faculty, staff and others are welcome to build the community.
Follow the Trend
• Many students already us social software.– IM– CHAT– Social Spaces– VOIP
• They are used to being immersed in the desktop space.
Eastern University students already use facebook. Students share with each other, faculty and staff. It’s a great place to share and interact.

Mandi’s Spaces
The Mashed Up LibraryThe potential is to create a great social space and bring libraries back to the role of community center, beyond today’s scope of information center. In this way libraries will establish a new identity that will stand the test of time. Ultimately libraries exist for people. We should embrace what the people want and help them help us carve new connections with our users.

Paradigm Shift Is there a fundamental paradigm shift occurring in our society?
Are more and more people living a larger portion of their lives within these on-line communities?
It's fascinating! My job has allowed me to have relationships with people from all over the world. It's not unusual for me to get an email on an IM from Africa or Hong Kong, regarding access to one of our library's resources or a reference question. Eastern University is an international school. I have had the opportunity to share part of my business and personal life with the faculty and students that I will never meet in person.
