VENTILATION SYSTEM
o The process of supply of fresh air and to replenish oxygen supply to
occupied and unoccupied spaces within buildings and other inhabited
structures is called ventilation
o Ventilation is necessary to:
i. Replenish the oxygen supply
ii. Dilute carbon dioxide
iii. Dilute odours, process emissions
iv. Provide air movement
v. Prevent the build up of potentially explosive vapour mixtures
VENTILATION SYSTEM
Requirements Of Good Ventilation System
o A good ventilation system should fulfill the following requirements.
i. It should admit sufficient quantity of fresh air and remove the requisite
contaminated air.
ii. It should admit clean and humid air.
iii. It should continuously change the air inside the room.
iv. It should properly control the velocity and quantity of air inside the
space.
v. The system should also control the temperature of the admitted air.
System Of Ventilation
Natural VentilationMechanical Ventilation
Natural Ventilation
Natural Ventilationo the process of supplying and removing air through an indoor space without using
mechanical systems. It refers to the flow of external air to an indoor space as a
result of pressure or temperature differences
o The benefits of natural ventilation include:-
i. Improved Indoor air quality (IAQ)
ii. Energy savings
iii. Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions
iv. Occupant control
v. Reduction in occupant illness associated with Sick Building Syndrome
vi. Increased worker productivity

Natural Ventilation
Mechanical Ventilation
Mechanical Ventilationo Mechanical ventilation systems circulate fresh air using ducts and fans rather than
relying on airflow through small holes or crack’s in a home’s wall, roof or windows.
Homeowners can breath easier knowing their home has a good ventilation.
o Benefits of using mechanical ventilation:-
i. Better indoor air quality –can remove pollutants, allergens, and moisture that can
cause mold problems
ii. More control – provide proper fresh air flow along with appropriate locations for
intake and exhaust
iii. Improved comfort – allow a constant flow of outside air into the home and can
also provide filtration, dehumidification, and conditioning of the incoming
outside air.
o Mechanical system may be classified as :
i. Vacuum system
ii. Propulsion system
iii. Air- conditioning system
Mechanical Ventilation
Vacuum System
o In this system exhust fans or blowers are installed near the celling to
extract used up air from inside and outside.
o Due to exhaustion of warm air from the room, air pressure in the room
will reduce causing flow of fresh air inside the room
Propulsion System
o In this system fresh air is forced from outside by force fans and vitiated air
is thrown out by itself or by outlet exhaust fan . E.g. air cooler at window
