The discovery of oil in the UAE has helped the economy by raising the GDP, modernizing, and providing a higher standard of living. Goals for the future include improving education and decreasing unemployment. Their GDP per capita is $49,000. The export oil, natural gas, dates, and dried fish. They import machinery, transportation equipment, chemicals, and food. Trading partners include: Japan, India, Singapore, US, China, Iran, and Germany.

Al Fahidi Fort is a famous tourist attraction in the city of Dubai. It was built in 1799, but now is turned into a museum. It was
used as a place for government, a jail, and the house of the ruler. It also protected the city from warlike situations. Al Fahidi was
made from shell rubble, coral, plaster, wood, mud, and palm fronds. In the museum there are many historical artifacts to
keep a record of the traditional life of Emirates.

In the UAE, people are very hospitable. They love receiving guests and socializing with family. Before the 1960’s their food consisted of home grown vegetables, meats like fish, sheep, and camel, bread, dates, and yogurt. Food has changed since then because of modernization. Arranged marriage is preferred and most men only have one wife even though they are allowed four. Islam is the most dominant religion. A strong tradition is storytelling and poetry.

The designs of building are usually simple, but the design has value to it. Their architecture is influences by many other cultures. Much architecture reflects the Islamic religion. Some buildings are historic, but new ones being built are more modern. The design also is built around the climate in the area along with religious influences.
