28 | A Note From the First Year Center
Most of you have not had the opportunity
to visit us since late summer. Now that
we are nearly halfway through the fall
semester, there is a hum of activity
throughout the campus. Our student
organizations are in full swing, planning
interesting events and programs. Students
are immersed in their academic pursuits,
spending time in the residence hall
study rooms, studios, or in our many
campus libraries, reading or writing,
and working together on projects. Our
new students have made many new
friends and our returning students have
reconnected with their classmates.
Parent & Family Weekend is the time for
us to share our community with you, our
families. As a parent myself, I know that all
of you are here primarily to spend time with
your students. But, I hope you have the
opportunity to experience the Washington
University community during your short
visit. Attend a course taught by one of our
internationally recognized faculty members.
Cheer on our football team as they take on
Oberlin College at Francis Field. Enjoy a
cup of coffee at Whispers Café in the Olin
Library or in the Tisch Commons of the
Danforth University Center. Visit the many
new spaces on our newly updated South
40 - a space we are all very proud of!
There is always
much to do and see
on our campus, and
I am delighted that
you are able to join
us. Please accept
my best wishes for
a rewarding visit.
Sincerely yours,
Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton
On behalf of all of my colleagues here at Washington University, welcome
to Parent & Family Weekend 2010! It is a great privilege to have so many of
you join us for a few days to see your students in their second home.
Welcome from the Chancellor

As a parent of a Washington University
student, it is important that you have
the opportunity to connect with fellow
parents and the University. There are
many ways for Washington U. parents to
stay informed, involved, and connected.
Ways Parents Get Involved
The Alumni & Parents Admission Program:
Parent members have the opportunity to
serve as ambassadors for the University,
host or attend receptions for admitted and
enrolling students, represent the University
at college fairs, and be resources for
parents of recently admitted students.
The Career Center: Parents can become
part of the Washington University
professional community by posting any
co-op, internship, or full-time positions
their organization may have available. A
parent can also assist the University by
introducing Career Center staff to their
Human Resources or recruiting team.
Be A Hometown Ambassador: Many
parents volunteer to host events in
their home for alumni, parents, and
friends of the University. Parents also
attend events in their hometowns to get
better connected to Washington U.
Washington University is far more
than an academic institution – it is
a community that brings together
individuals from all over the world.
Parents are valuable members
of this dynamic community.
Although geographically scattered,
Washington University parents
share a central value: they want
each student to have the best
undergraduate experience possible.

Where Your Gift Will Go
Gifts to the Parents Annual Fund support
the school in which your student is
enrolled or other programs you choose to
designate. Each dean or director selects
priorities for parents’ gifts to that school or
program, such as enhancing technology
or providing career development services
for students. The Parents Annual Fund is
expended during the current academic
year to help attract the highest caliber
faculty and to strengthen your student’s
school or favorite program.
Why Give?
Parents make gifts to support Washington
University for a number of reasons:
They appreciate their son or daughter’s
experience at the University.
They believe in the value of
supporting excellence in education.
They realize 60% of students receive
scholarships or financial aid to
attend the University. By providing
scholarship support, the Parents
Annual Fund helps to ensure diversity
in the student body that enriches
the learning experience for all.
They see an opportunity to have
a transformational impact on the
University and on some of its students.
It feels good to know they’re
making a difference!
Tuition covers only a portion of the
total cost to educate each student.
The Parents Annual Fund makes an
immediate impact to enhance the college
experience for your son or daughter.
William Greenleaf Eliot Society
Your gift of $1,000 or more to the Parents
Annual Fund will be recognized with
membership in the William Greenleaf
Eliot Society. Eliot Society members help
Washington University sustain and build
on its stature as one of the world’s leading
institutions of teaching and research.
Membership also carries many benefits,
including parking privileges on the
Danforth Campus—for more information,
please call Parent Programs at (800) 247-
8517 or e-mail [email protected].
How To Give?
To contribute to the Parents Annual Fund,
please visit: www.wustl.edu/community/
parents/parentsfund.html or call the Parent
Programs Office at (800) 247-8517.
The Alumni and Parents Admission
Program (APAP) is a group of dedicated
Washington University alumni and parents
who assist with the undergraduate
admissions process. APAP members
help the University recruit, interview, and
enroll talented students. Washington
University parents are in a special
position to communicate undergraduate
student experiences, as well as what
is to be gained from a WU education.
In addition, they help to personalize
what might otherwise seem like a
formal and form-laden application. Few
people are better qualified to promote
Washington University than parents
of current Washington U. students.
Parent members of APAP have an
important perspective to share with
prospective parents and students as they
consider Washington University. APAP
parent members may host and attend
receptions; staff College Fairs; participate
in Parent to Parent Calling, the Parents
Resource List, and the International
Resource List; and help to spread the word
about Washington U. in their communities.
APAP allows parents and alumni to
make a significant contribution to
How Can You Become Part of APAP?
the WU community from their local
communities. It also enables parents
and alumni to make connections with
one another in cities all over the world.
For information about how to get
involved with APAP or to join, please
visit apap.wustl.edu, or contact us at
(800 or 314) 935-4826 or [email protected].
Family Ties
Family Ties is an e-newsletter that is
sent out 4 times during the academic
year to parent and family members of
Washington University students. To

The Parents Annual
Fund is a vital part
of the Washington
University Annual
Fund. Annual gifts

experience for
every student.

Freshman Reading Program
The book selected for the 2010 Freshman
Reading Program is The Reluctant
Fundamentalist, by Mohsin Hamid. In this
engaging and suspenseful novel, a young
Pakistani man tells an American his story
over a meal in a Lahore marketplace.
The book explores complex themes
of culture, identity, profiling, coming of
age, and the immigrant experience. By
leaving much open to interpretation,
the author encourages the reader to
contemplate and confront his or her own
perspectives, ideas, and assumptions.
Faculty members who participated in
the Freshman Reading Program floor
discussions will provide parents with an
inside view of what transpired during
Orientation. Please come join in the
conversation even if you have not had
the opportunity to read this year’s book!

Permanent Collection
The Bernoudy Permanent Collection Gallery
includes selections from the Museum’s
outstanding collection. The gallery is
organized thematically into four sections:
Landscape, Portraiture, Abstraction, and
the Everyday. The installation focuses
on the ways in which artists in the 19th,
20th, and 21st centuries have negotiated
the upheavals of modernization—new
technologies, radical political changes,
rapid urbanization, increased consumerism,
the spread of the mass media—and the
subsequent challenges to notions of artistic
creativity, originality, and authorship.

A Day Like Any Other

Neuenschwander’s work, revealing her
wide-ranging, interdisciplinary practice
that merges painting, photography, film,
sculpture, installation, collaborative actions,
and participatory events. Her authorship
of the work is primary, but she also
functions as an editor, collaborator, social
organizer, and commissioning agent. Like
her predecessors Lygia Clark and Hélio
Oiticica, Neuenschwander resists a singular
direction in her practice, creating a series
of organic relationships that interweave
themes such as nature, language,
temporality, and the poetry of the quotidian.

by John Gay's 18th -century hit The

underworld, making his deadly mischief.
A true masterpiece of the "Weimar" era,
Brecht's sardonically funny script and Kurt
Weill's jazzy score created a theatrical
sensation when it was first produced in
1928. The Threepenny Opera has proven
to be Brecht and Hauptmann's most
popular work, serving as an inspiration
for Cabaret, Chicago, and Urinetown.

2010, an eight foot-tall bronze
statue of legendary St. Louis rocker
Chuck Berry will begin standing

Harry Weber will create the statue,

Dear Parents,
We know that your sons and daughters
appreciate that you took the time to
come for Parent & Family Weekend. We
appreciate it as well and we hope that
you have a wonderful visit with your
children. This weekend you have the
opportunity to see how full their lives
have become. They are working hard in
the classroom, the laboratory, and the
library and they are volunteering in the
community, participating in performing arts
of various sorts—you’ll hear them talking
about Diwali—and they are playing varsity
and intramural sports. They may even
look tired—I’m always amazed, though, at
their reserves of energy and enthusiasm.
Please share with them how impressed
you are; they have certainly impressed us!
