Unique Performance for Inorganic Pigments
Enhancing The Performance of Your Products
1
SP- Pigments are surface treated with aluminosilicate (inci names: silica, alumina)
to provide unique performance advantages for inorganic pigments:
•Surface Passivation
•Hydrophilicity
•Improved Dispersion
2
Surface Passivation - Yellow Iron OxideComparison of SP-Surface Passivated Treated Yellow Iron Oxide
vs. Non-treated Yellow Iron Oxide as a Function of Aging Time at 55oC
avobenzone Fe-chelation reaction was studied in the presence and in the absence of
yellow oxide powders. The powders were dispersed in a solution containing 2.5%
avobenzone in caprylictriglyceride (w/w). Samples were prepared by blending 7.5 g
of solution, 0.4g powder and 0.06 g water. They were placed in an oven to age at
55oC.

3
Hydrophilicity –Yellow Iron Oxide & Titanium Dioxide
SP-Surface Passivated treated powders are hydrophilic and disperse more readily in water than their non-treated counterparts
The treated powders spontaneously disperse (no agitation)

Spontaneous dispersion Spontaneous dispersion4
Hydrophilicity - Red Iron Oxide
• The treated powders spontaneously disperse (no agitation)
• After shaking, the improved dispersion leads to a higher degree of light scattering with the same volume fraction of pigment (smaller particle size – less agglomeration)

Spontaneous dispersion After shaking5
Improved Dispersion – Black Iron Oxide The SP-Surface Passivated treated powders prefer to
remain wetted and dispersed in water, whereas the non-treated powders “plate-out” over the substrate

Improved Dispersion – Black Iron Oxide
The SP-Surface Passivated treated pigments do not agglomerate with carbomers allowing formulation of
pigmented gels.

Manufacturing Instructions:
1. Combine Part G. Heat to 75-80ºC with stirring.
2. Prepare color grind on a three roll mill. Add to Part G with stirring.
3. Sprinkle Ultrez 10 into water with slow homogenizer agitation. Heat to 55ºC. When dispersed, combine and add Part B. Combine and add Part C. Combine and add Part D.
Add Part E ingredients in order. Turn off homogenizer. Add Part F. Heat to 75-80ºC with stirring for 15 minutes. Resume homogenizer agitation.
4. Add combined Parts GH to Parts A-F while homogenizing. Maintain temperature and agitation for 15 minutes.
5. Cool to 45ºC. Combine and add Part I. Cool to 30ºC. Drop batch.
