The years keep piling up.The Union football team has not won a
slate championship in some time after winningtwo its first two - in the playoff era - in thell>70s. its next five in the 1980s and its finalthree in tlie 1990s.
From 1978 to 1993 - a 16-season spanUnion captured North 2, Group 4 a total of 10times, which is still the record.
The Farmers also reached the champi-onship game two <>l the other six seasons.From 1904-2010 - a 17-season span • Unionhas not won North 2, Group 4 once aid hasonK reached the final twice.
Why is that you ask?There are many reasons.Some include coaching and the expan-
sion of North 2. Group 4 from lour counties- Warren, Morris, Essex, Union in the olddays - to schools now also included fromMiddlesex, llunterdon, Somerset and Hud-son counties.
Some standout resident youngsters havealso opted to play at out-of-county parochialschools for one reason or another.
Union had the look of a state champion afew times since winning its last crown.
Union defeated an 8-0 Elizabeth squad onthe road in the 1996 North 2. Group 4 semifi-nals before getting embarrassed in the titlegame against Montelair at Giants Stadium.
The Farmers were winning the 2003 North2, Group 4 final against Piscataway at Giants
Stadium before the game fell apart for them inmore ways than one in the fourth quarter.
The 2009 squad was 7-0 and riding highheading into a home game against Westfieldon the playoff cutoff date weekend. An injuryto a key player in that contest was a big reasonwhy the Farmers never won again that season.
The 1 W> squad fell a yard short of beatingMontelair at Rulgers in the North 2. Group 4semifinals and getting a shot at Elizabeth in thefinal. Union was the onh team to heat Elizabethin the regular season that year.
There are four examples of Union havingits moments since last winning North 2. Group4 in 1993. However, those seasons have beenfew and far between for a program thai wasused lo winning championships almost on ayearly basis.
Perhaps it"s easier to explain why Unionwon so much in the past. You can start withone of the greatest coaching stalls in thehistory of high school football in New Jer-sey.
At the lop was Lou Rettino. Assistantsincluded the likes of Fred Stengel, Jim Bene-dict, John Quinn, Gary Zakovic, CarmenGuarino, Jeff Longiuel, diet Czaplinski, JackDeBarberi and Brian Shanahan.
Stengel (Bergen Catholic), Benedict (Sum-mit), Quinn (Roxbury and New Brunswick)and Zakovic (Dover) went on to coach otherschools to state titles.
Present Roxbury coach Cosmo Lorussoguided Pequannock to consecutive statechampionships, while present Ridge coach
Bill Tracj led Livingston to its only playoffcrown. Both played at Union when Rettinowas the iiead coach, Lorusso a more promi-nent player at quarterback.
Sheridan played on Union's lasl two 11-0state championships teams his junior and sen-ior seasons in 1991 and 1992.
Union went 5-5 lasl year by winning Us finalthree games. The Farmers also went 5-5 in Sheri-dan's fust year ut the helm in 2007. winning fi\eof their last six to do so.
Playoff years in between included an 8-3finish and one playoff win in 200X and a 7-3conclusion and no playoff wins in 200'). a sea-son that began with seven straight wins andended with three consecutive losses.
In the century's first decade, 2000-2009.Union was held to a total of live playoff winsin a total of seven playoff seasons. Comparedto the decades of tlie 1980s and 1990s, that wasa pretty big drop off.
"Just making the playoffs now in North 2,Group 4 is a big achievement," Sheridan said."I can't imagine a better section in New Jer-sey."
Sheridan is pleased to have former keanassistant coach Dominie Cuniglio as his offen-sive coordinator. Other assistants include RyanComeau, who Sheridan played with at Rutgersand coached with at Newark East Side; Car-men Marano, who is also a 1993 UHS gradu-ate who played on the 1991 and 1(>92 statechampionship teams; Gars Long, who coachedwith Sheridan at Widener College and JimmyCollins, who is the defensive backs coach.

The origin ofvinyl chloride (a non-petroleum com-pound) is unknown. Currently twoClassification Exception Areas havebeen established on-sile as institution-al controls for the residual chlorinatedand petroleum-based constituents ingroundwater. The area utilizes munic-ipal water service, so drinking water isnot affected by the discharge.
