Aims:Students will understand styles of market research. They will use both to focus upon one product.
Objectives:All students will identify 2 forms of secondary researchMost students will identify 2 forms of secondary research and explain their functionSome students will identify 3 forms of secondary research, explain and use their functions for assignment purposes

How’s Your Primary Research Coming Along?
Quantitative & Qualitative. Questionnaires, Interviews & Surveys
How are you doing? Have you been asking questions, and more importantly recording your research?
![Page 7: U1 Lesson 04](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022082915/545892acaf79594e128b4c36/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Secondary Research
• What is it?• Why bother?• How can it help you in your studies?
![Page 8: U1 Lesson 04](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022082915/545892acaf79594e128b4c36/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
• Reviews• Blogs• Gamelogs• Archives
These are the BIG GUNS of production but especially market research…
Secondary Research

Review
• Overview• Experience• Mostly qualitative (unless succeeded by ratings)• Unknown author or reviewer
Secondary Research

Archives
• Variety• Rationale• Multitude of sources• Usually used in massive research
FACT: The 2008 re-make of Ultimate’s JetPac by RARE involved a lot of retro stats and archived research into the original game

Little Big Planet
Primary Research Secondary Research
I asked 7 questions about the game to 10 people
I read 10 reviews of the game which were written shortly after release (Qualitative)
I did an online survey I read and recorded rating from 10 reviews (Quantitative)
I conducted a focus group with set questions to 7 people which I then recorded on camera
I watch the online developer’s video blog on the game in order to understand some of the research that they had undertook
![Page 12: U1 Lesson 04](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022082915/545892acaf79594e128b4c36/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Quantitative Research
• Numbers – “100 people were asked…”• Percentages – “40% of RPG games are…”• Fractions – “1/4 of all FPS games have…”• Decimals – “3.25 hours of gameplay is…”
![Page 13: U1 Lesson 04](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022082915/545892acaf79594e128b4c36/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Qualitative
• Feelings – “I felt that this was…”• Experiences – “When I got to the first checkpoint, I…”• Aspirations / Hopes – “I wanted it to go on longer…”• Expectations – “It was much better than I thought.”
![Page 14: U1 Lesson 04](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022082915/545892acaf79594e128b4c36/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Activity
Watch the short film on games:
• 2 key secondary quantitative research examples• 2 key secondary qualitative research examples
![Page 15: U1 Lesson 04](https://reader036.vdocuments.mx/reader036/viewer/2022082915/545892acaf79594e128b4c36/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Remember!• Secondary research is where YOU read the existing research and record the answers for YOUR needs. Copying existing research without showing sources of reference won’t help you with forthcoming assignments (or this one)• Take small steps. Don’t look for mammoth evidence and you won’t be bamboozled by the answer• Planning is everything. Think about what you will do at every stage of research and pre-production.

Next Week!
You’ll make a start on Secondary Research to help you with your Computer Game Case Study Assignment.
Remember: I am away in Budapest, so, someone else will be delivering the session. Please be punctual and douche-free.

Overview – What Have We Learned?
• Types of research• The key differences within Secondary Research• Making plans
Have we met our outcomes?
