A The new description framework operates on the assump-tion that the formal character of every typeface can beexplained in terms of its specific configuration of the twomain description components: sources (generic influences)and formal attributes (specific formal characteristics)
B Reference is also made to the pattern definition listingsto see if a given typeform adheres to any of the establishedconfigurations of sources and formal attributes which recurthroughout typeform history. In the case of the sample typeshown (Monotype Old English) reference is made to theTextura pattern. For formal trends too general to be out-lined by use of a specific pattern or representing too fewtypefaces reference is made to a ‘summary’.
