CRIME: SUSPECTS BELIEVED TO BE MEMBERS OF MALL ROBBERY SYNDICATE ARRESTED
Mall mobsters nabbedMICHELLE LINNERT
@linnertmb
Police believe they have caught coremembers of an armed robbery syndi-cate after at least 32 suspects were ar-
rested recently. While the majority of suspects were ar-
rested in Gauteng, as reported by City Press,a numberwere linked to reconnaissanceandattacks at local malls. The larger groupwas accosted after police
recovered and analysed cellphone data andthe operating network of suspected syndi-
cate members. The group is linked to at least 34 robberies,
including those at cellphone and jewellerystores, and a number of ATMbombings,CityPress reported. Some of the armed robberies to have hit
the Cape since last year include those at Ca-nalWalk, Tyger Valley, CapeGate, SomersetMall, Zevenwacht Mall in the northern sub-urbs and at Longbeach Mall, Bayside Malland High Constantia in the south. In Kraaifontein, police had reportedly
been hunting two suspects involved in thebombing of an ATM inside the Seven Eleven
in Northpine on 18 February.CanalWalk and Bayside shopping centres
were targeted by robbers in the week of 17October last year. The Vodacom store in theTygerValleyCentrewashit on3October lastyear and Zevenwacht Mall in Kuils River aswell as the iPic Centre in Soneike were bothtargeted as far back as April last year.Of these, themost recent was the bombing
of an ATM in Bellville, which proved one ofthe biggestmistakes for at least sixmembersof the syndicate. These suspectswere involved in a standoff
with a police General at the ATM bombing
at the Old Oak Centre on 4 March, and werebeing tracked by a special police task force. This task force was aware of the six mak-
ing their way to the Western Cape by bus,City Press reported.Police used the cellphone data and sur-
mised the group had been scouting out cen-tres in Brackenfell and Tyger Valley – bothof which were hit late last year. The suspects are believed to have bombed
the ATM after they ran out of money. Twowere wounded and arrested on the scene, and the rest at the nearby taxi rank.

Their recovered cellphones were used to po-sitively link them to robberies at Sea Point,Malmesbury, CanalWalk, Gardens and Stel-lenbosch.The six suspects were also believed to ha-
ve been involved in bombing a Tattersallssafe in Durban Road on 3 March.Provincial police spokesperson Captain
Frederick vanWyk said their investigationswere in an advanced stage.“This entire operation is crime intelligen-
ce-driven. It is at an advanced and highlysensitive stage, and we are not allowed tocomment any further on the matter.”According to the Institute forSecurityStu-
dies, the past year has seen a 143% increasein armed robberies at shopping centres. But national police spokesperson Lieute-
nant General Solomon Makgale told CityPress most of the suspects responsible forthe robberies in Gauteng and the WesternCape were behind bars.“There are, however, still a few of their as-
sociates – alongwith thedealers towhomthecellphones are sold – at large.“We are now focusing on them.”Police were said to be using the cellphone
data and video footage from centres to iden-tify individuals.“All the information is consolidated to
compile profiles of the ringleaders, as wellas their modus operandi,” Makgale was re-ported as saying.
This allowed the creation of a databasethat could be cross-referenced.“It gives us an intelligence picture that al-
lowsus, throughvisible preventive policing,to thwart the plans of robbers, particularlyat shopping centres,”Makgale is reported assaying.“It is also clear that the syndicates are
multidimensional in that they not only car-ry out different types of robberies, but alsohijack vehicles, robATMsand commit otherviolent crimes.”Most of the suspects arrested in Gauteng
were of Zimbabwean nationality, City Pressreported.

The drive to get early learning centresregistered with the City and provincialgovernment is in full swing.
The Early Childhood Development(ECD) drive, which is a joint project be-tween City and province, will equip un-registered creches, daycare centres andplayschools with the necessary informa-tion to ensure they become fully compli-ant ECD centres.

velopment and ECD portfolio committeechairperson, Raelene Arendse.

Health advances are key to the economicand social growth and development of theTygerberg region. This is according to the Greater Tyger-
berg Partnership (GTP), which held its firsthealth innovation workshop to this end on26 March. The workshop formed part of the GTP’s
regeneration strategy and was preceded byvarious one-on-one sessions with relevantstakeholders from the private and publicsectors, as well as NGOs.“The workshop focussed around two pro-
jects, namely the Tygerberg IntegratedMedical Portal (TIMP) andaHealth Innova-tion Forum (HIF),” said Chris O’Connor,GTP CEO.The medical portal will offer virtual ser-
vices to a broad spectrum of users includ-ing health practitioners, patients, govern-ment and academic institutions, he said.It will serve as a resource-sharing centre
where healthcare services will become eas-ily accessible to users through apps, one of
which is an online appointment bookingservice. The HIF will serve as the forum where
stakeholders can identify mutual challen-ges and possible solutions. The workshop was opened by the City’s
Siyabulela Mamkeli, new mayco memberfor health, who indicated his support forthe GTP’s projects and requested he be in-cluded in the processes.Speaker Patrick Collings addressed the
potential for Tygerberg to champion the de-velopment of a “wearable technology” sec-tor.Speaker Yaseen Kahn of the Open Medi-
cine Project focused on his organisation’ssuccesses and how their approach to healthinnovation could be beneficial to the oneadopted for the Tygerberg.“Stakeholders were positive about the
two projects and showed a keen interest ingetting involved, thus the GTP will bebringing partners together to continue run-ning these projects,” said Khan.

A well-known Italian cooking masterwas killed in a collision with a truckon the M5 at about 13:00 last Monday.
Ester Ranzani (73) from Rosedale Estatein Goedemoed, Durbanville was well-known in the northern suburbs for her andher husband’s Italian deli, Italian Cuisinesituated in Duminy Street in Boston.
Many people will remember her for thecooking classes she presented in the delikitchen after hours.
The deli was also well-known for its lasa-gne, filled ravioli and fresh pasta.
Ester started giving Italian language les-sons and taught students in the deli.
Ester and her husband Enio immigratedfrom Italy about 45 years ago and stayed inTygerberg Hills for many years. All threeof their children were born in South Africaand went to schools in the Tygerberg area.
When Ester’s husband passed awayabout seven years ago, she sold the shopand started giving private cooking and Ital-ian language lessons fromher home inGoe-demoed.
She also presented Italian cooking class-
es tomembers of theUniversity of theThirdAge (U3A), of which she was a member.
“Ester had a great interest in life and hada very enquiringmind. Sheloved to travel and was dueto leave on a trip to Viet-nam and Cambodia on thispast Saturday, which shewas really looking forwardto, said Penny MacKenzie,a close friend and studentfrom Durbanville.
“She was also an avidreader and a devout Chris-tian,” said MacKenzie.
Another friend, Liz Fou-rie from Boston, said Esterwas widely known andloved.
“I still picture going intothe shop to buy pasta, Ital-ian tomatoes, dried porcinimushrooms or Parmesancheese,” said Fourie.
“One left the shop with your purchases, good conversation and loads of positivityand cheerfulness,” she reminsced.
“She also read widely and when the shopwas quiet she would sit at the little round
table in the afternoon sun reading.“Her legendary cooking classes were
great fun, very sociable and dramaticallychanged many people’s ap-proach to food, ingredientsand what Italian food wasall about.
“We pay tribute to a spe-cial friend, cooking mentorand mother. She left a lega-cy of wonderful food andpositivity to all her friends. Our condolences go to herchildren.”
Ester leaves behind adaughter, Julienne, andtwo sons, Christian and Al-lan Ranzani, and threegrandchildren.
No final funeral arrange-ments were known by timeof going to press, but it willtake place at the Durban-ville Catholic Church, most

There is a unique clinic at theStikland Hospital helping towean heroin and other opiateaddicts off drugs by offeringsubstitute substances.
The Opiod Substitution Ther-apy (OST) Clinic treats outpa-tients and offers a brief admis-sion for heroin detoxification.
Professor Liezl Koen, head ofclinical services at StiklandHospital, said the “highly un-pleasant withdrawal syn-drome” makes it very hard foraddicts to stop using heroin.
Abdominal cramps, anxiety, irritability, muscle aches, diar-rhoea and a raised pulse andblood pressure often makes de-toxing unbearable.
“The Heroin DetoxificationUnit offers heroin users a one-week admission to help themthrough this withdrawal peri-od,” Koen said.
When more conventional de-toxmethods failed, substitutiondrugs were employed.
“Opioid substitution involvesthe medication such as Metha-done or Suboxone as a substi-tute to heroin,” said Koen.
She said these medicationsprevented withdrawal symp-toms, reduced cravings andgave patients the chance to “sta-bilise their social functioningand reduce drug activities”.
“It is considered a safe and ef-fective treatment for a heroinuse disorder,” she said.
The OST Clinic takes place atthe hospital on aMondaymorn-ing from 08:00.
“Prior to being admitted tothis unit all clients are expectedto have had an adequate assess-ment, provided with psycho-ed-ucation around the detoxifica-tion process and on dischargeare expected to join a rehabilita-tion centre that will assist cli-ents in maintaining a drug freelifestyle,” said Koen.
Before starting the process, clients are informed of the sideeffects associatedwith substitu-tion therapies, that these treat-ments are currently only avail-able at certain private pharma-cies, and of the costs of thesemedications.
Only clients who have beenreferred by a social worker ordoctor are allowed to use theclinic’s services. The clinic hastwo in-house psychiatrists anda psychiatric registrar.
Edna Lambrechts, a socialworker in private practice whospecialises in psychiatric servi-ces and addiction care, often as-sists local social developmentorganisationMetroEvangelicalServices and lauded the clinic’sservices.
She spoke to Bellville role-players at a recent meeting.
“The Stikland OST Clinic isvery successful. It has the high-est success rate in South Africafor these kind of services,” shesaid. The cost differs per patientpermedicationandLambrechtscalled on churches and commu-nity organisations and NGOs tosupport the clinic, or sponsorpatients requiring treatment.
“We need to get clients intothis service and help sponsorthem,” she said.

Cats must be keptin their own yards
We have also had endlessissues with the cats.Just like people love their
cats we love our birds, fish anddog. Never do they cause anyissues in the neighbourhood. They live and stay on ourpremises. The cats have eaten birds and
fish. When I complain to theneighbour he thinks I am theneighbour from hell.We are suppose to love our
neighbours but now they ignoreme like I am the plague. They have replaced fish but
the new ones also got eaten. Oh,and our birds are just commonbirds you can get anywhere. It is not fair, the cats do this
and also poo all over my gardenand dig up our plants.I am just expected to put up
with this and not say anything. If you want cats and love themso much keep them in yourown garden and house.I don’t blame you for shooting

A young resident in Stellenbergwas approached by one of thebicycle patrollers while walkinghome recently. Both he and I,and probably most residents inthe area, welcome the investiga-tion. However, the aggressiveand demeaning manner inwhich the patroller addressedthe resident is utterly unaccep-table. He was verbally abusiveto an innocent person. When challenged on his
attitude and his rationale, thepatroller said that he wastipped off by another resident. As it happens, this accostedresident is black and anotherpedestrian who is white wasnot suspected at all. This young man has walked
the same route since last year,he is recognised by those alongthis route. Indeed it was only
Racial profiling seemsto be modus operandi
The theory states that maintai-ning and monitoring urbanenvironments to prevent smallcrimes such as vandalism, public drinking and so forthhelps create an atmosphere oforder and lawfulness, therebypreventing more serious crimesfrom occuring.I believe Parow SAPS are
lacking, and crime is spirallingout of control. I previouslywrote a letter to TygerBurgerconcerning the squatters onOccuvision’s stoep, and thisweek I noticed another letter inthis regard.I was hoping the owners of
the building would have donesomething about the squattersby now. Instead, the squattersnow got “promoted” to movinginto the building. What now? What’s next? Are we going towait until they make a hole inthe wall at Lifestyle Fabrics, setthe building alight, use it forall sorts of illegal activities, etc? The owners of the building
really need to be taken to task.Of course this is not the only
building or incident where thepolice choose to look the otherway although they “can clearlysee” that the building is beingoccupied illegally.

With the Easter road carnage starting lastweek, draft legislation compelling motor-ists to use car seats for children has beenwelcomed.ER24 emergency services applauded the
new regulation in the National Road Traf-fic Act that aims to protect children. The regulation states children under the
age of three will be compelled to bestrapped in as of Friday 1May.Non-compli-ant motorists face hefty fines.“Several motorists still refuse to take se-
riously the constant warnings and calls byemergency services and authorities tohave children properly restrained in vehi-cles,” said ER24’s Chitra Bodasing.“The sad truth is ER24 and other emer-
gency services attend to horrific collisionsinvolving children on a weekly basis.“(The)majority of unrestrained children
are flung out of vehicles and either sustaincritical injuries or die in collisions.“For those parents who cannot afford
new car seats, remember there are organi-sations that sell secondhand car seats orhand them out for an affordable donation.”They offered the following advice:VInfants should ride rear-facing at least
until they are a year old.VOnce this is outgrown, they should use
a forward-facing safety seat with a full har-ness.
VChildrenwho have outgrown a convert-ible safety seat should use a booster seat.
VChildren tall enough to wear an adultseat belt should still ride in the back seatuntil they are 13 years old.

Pet theft is on the rise, warns Jennifer Da-vies of Fisantekraal Animal Welfare(FAW).Top breeds targeted are Boerboels, Ger-
manShepherds,Huskies,Malamutes,Wolfhybrids,Rottweilers, PitBull Terrier,Bull-terriers, Staffordshire Bullterriers andGreyhounds.Yorkshire Terriers and other toy breeds
are increasingly popular. Persian and Sia-mese cats are also sometimes taken, Da-vies says.“Many people still don’t realise pet theft
is a very real problem. Stolen animals, usu-ally purebred dogs, are taken mainly forbreeding, guarding or dog fighting.“By not taking proper precautions, you
areputtingyour animals at risk, especiallyif you’ve chosen to keep a high risk breed. It’s very sad because most stolen dog casescould be prevented,” Davies says.According to the National Animal Wel-
fare Task Team, the main reason dogs arestolen is for breeding. Therefore, unneu-tered male dogs, lactating or pregnant fe-males or those on heat, and puppies are atparticular risk.“These ‘puppy mill’ dogs live in horrific
conditions and usually meet an equallyhorrific end,” Davies says.Thieves even lure unneuteredmale dogs
bywalkinganon-heat bitch throughneigh-bourhoods.“By having your pet sterilised, you re-
duce the risk of their theft and save everyanimal yourpetwould otherwisehave end-ed up giving birth to.“Responsible, caring pet owners who ar-
en’t registered breeders should have theirpets sterilised,” Davies says. Most dogs are stolen from their homes
–many are opportunistic crimes, but oftenthieves have been watching for a while.“Never leave dogs – especially puppies
or toy breeds – alone and visible, especiallyif you’re out all day. Consider ‘doggy day-care’ or leave them indoors.“Dogshave evenbeen stolenwhen let out
to ‘do their business’, so accompany them.If need be, separate front and back yardsand hide your dogs at the back. Even ifyour dog avoids strangers, it could still bedrugged or snagged with a catch pole,” shewarns.“Be aware of strangers in the area, in-
cluding children, especially if they arepeering into yards, watching dog walkersor questioning you about your dog.“Never allow dogs to roam the street or
leave them in your car or tied up in frontof a shop,” she says.Davies suggested pet owners put a collar
and tag on their pet and have them micro-chipped.The FAW, which works in the township
of Fisantekraal near Durbanville, hasmany adorable animals up for adoption. Ifyou can’t adopt, butwould like to help, con-sider joining the sponsorship programmefor only R200 per month. One class format pros and consADRIAN PHEIFFER
The second round of the South Africanmain circuit championship due to takeplace in conjunction with the Extreme
Festival sponsored by Wingfield Motors atKillarney on Saturday, is expected to be thebiggest meeting of the year.Topping the bill, the national production
cars are to be seen in a virtual one class for-mat for the first time. This has come aboutafter the class T entries received more mus-cle by being allowed additional turbo boost, larger tyres and unrestricted suspensionmodifications. The results of the three events during the
first round at Zwartkops last month whichsaw Michael van Rooyen’s turbochargedChev Cruze win the first race, with class AAudi S4’s in the hands of Hennie Groenew-
ald and Michael Stephan taking the nexttwo, appear to justify the changes. However, the pit critics were claiming the
tyre wear on the abrasive surface worked tothe benefit of the all wheel drive Audis. Ad-ditionally, Killarney has longer straightsthatmaybeanadvantage for the smaller tur-bocharged Chev and Ford Focus STs.It sounds like a close one.
Driver to watchBrennon Green (Golf 5 GTi) is the Cape’s
only representative in a new production carcategory for privateers. Hismain oppositionis likely to come from Freek Burger Jnr andSnr, who were outstanding at Zwartkops ina pair of Mazda 3 MPSs.Then there are some who claim the skrik
vir niks tigers in the EngenVolkswagen Cupevents are always responsible for some of
the best racing of the day. Of course the driv-er to watch here is teenager Sheldon van derLinde forwhombig things are being predict-ed. Although Sheldonwon the first round upnorth he was closely shadowed by TasminPepper and Shaun la Reservee, with theCape’s John Craig Jnr, not far behind. With a home track advantage, it is going
to be interesting to see how local hotshotsNian duToit and Jurie Swart Jnr fare in thishard fought one-make category. While the Midas Sport Duratec Formula
Fords are the closest we’re likely to get toFormula 1 at Killarney, their racing atZwartkops was more exciting than in theevents at the Albert Park and in KualaLumpur. The sensation in the first race wasthe performance of rookie driver and formerkarter Julian van der Watt, who went on tobeat Robert Wolk and Matthew Merton.
UnfortunatelyVan derWatt’s lack of expe-rience showed when a typical Highveldthunderstorm at the start of the second racebrought out the wet weather tyres and re-sulted in him dropping well down the order.Victory thenwent toWolkwhowas followedby reigning champion Nicholas van Weeleyand Dewald Brummer.Other events during the day are going to
feature Crossley and Webb sports and GTcars, Midas Sport Clubman cars and MikeHopkins superbikes. There are also going to be combined
events for the V8 Masters and Makita For-mula supercars. With the first race due off at 10:10, admis-
sion is R90 for adults and R40 for scholarsunder 16. There is no charge for kiddies un-der 12. Tickets are also available from Com-puticket.

GEMEENSKAPSBEKER: NÁ LANG EN HARDE PAD WORD DURBELL BEKROON AS KAMPIOEN

SAREL BURGER
Brackenfell beskik eweneens tans oor ’n
Ander spanne gaan dié seisoen in Tiere se nekke blaas
