Whaling in America became popular in the 1700s and by the mid 1800s it was a booming
commercial business.

Americans would use all parts of a whale, bones, meat, blubber, etc. They especially loved the oils that whales produced.
Sperm Whales produced a special oil called Spermaceti that was used to create candles. Some people say they were the best candles ever made, before or since.

Junichi Sato and Toru Suzuki are Japanese anti-whaling activists known as the “Tokyo Two”. They were arrested for
stealing a shipment of whale meat that was shipped by a Japanese scientist.

The Tokyo Two were sentenced to 5 years in jail.
The sentence was then suspended and the two men were freed!

The Ady Gil
Pete Bethune is the captain of the Ady Gil speed boat. He is part of the Sea Shepard Anti-Whaling activist group.

Pete was arrested and charged with trespassing after boarding a Japanese research ship. He did so in an effort to arrest the research ship’s captain.

Pete Bethune was sentenced to two years in a Japanese prison for trespassing and boarding a ship with a deadly weapon.
The sentence was later suspended and Pete was freed back to America.
