Benson Ho, General Member
Oh la la . . .Service!` `
After a long night spent with my co-family heads preparing for Familyevelations the next day, I had signed up for a service event the next morn-ng! Running on three hours of sleep, I somehow had the energy for Sprucet Up, an ongoing, light gardening service project at Daniel Webster Middlechool. The refreshing cool air and presence of enthusiastic newbies Ericahen, Duc Huynh, Jacob Virtusio, Steven Phong, Juliana Deer, and (somewhatew) Wilson Chen at this event definitely woke me up!
I often describe Spruce It Up as a more novice gardening project, especiallyhen you stack it against the more physically demanding Stong Creek Res-oration. We got through the weed removal quickly and we were able to move ono other tasks. The site leader, Cynde, asked us to help plant daffodil bulbs inparticular plot of the garden. We all first began digging holes that were aboutalf a foot deep, seated the daffodil bulbs, filled the holes with water, and re-
laced the holes with the dirt we initally dug up.Since I had to ensure that we all get back to campus on time for Family
evelations, we left the site a bit earlier. Since a mere threepeople attendedhis service event last time, it truly excites me to know that this event hasecome more popular and more lively with all the new enthusiastic members!ever had I expected such a turnout for this particular event. I witnessed aromising start to this year, so now I anticipate a promising rest of the year.m proud of you, newbies! Keep up the great work!

Fall Festival
Duy-An Le, General MemberNatalie Yip, Historian
Halloween:a time of horror and scare, but not for the Kiwanis Family! At Playa del Reys Fall Festival,CKI memberse out to help by working at various booths .We had volunteers help facilitate the jumpers and others worked the gamehs.Seeing the smiles on their faces made our day,and speaking of faces heres a report of what was taking place at thehs from Natalie Yip,who was leading the face painting.
We also did face painting for kids.It was so cool because we were given 10 professional brushes perpainter. Our station had the longest line because everyone wanted their facespainted!.The easiest drawing was the rainbow. The majority of the kids appre-ciated and ran away happily with a fresh new face.
When the festivites were all over,we rolled up our sleeves, tookbooths down, and called it a day.Fall Festival was a day where we made alot of kids happy and did meaningful service with immediate gratification.
P.S.Shout out to that awesome Angry Bird face paint.
Eight in the morning, yet there were already so many eager students waiting outside a large bus, ready to get their hands dirty and do some heavy duty service. We were short some seats when wearded the bus due to an unexpectedly big turnout of volunteers, but they found a way to get all of us to
algrove Elelmentary School safely. When we got off the bus and walked to the garden, the first thing wew was an open area, with nothing but flat dirt amongst the walkway, a giat mound of dirt and a pile ofge rocks. The staff members were very efficient in allocating jobs to all volunteers as well as preventingy overload by controlling when to assign jobs. There were people shoveling the dirt from the pile to
heelbarrows and people pushing wheelbarrows to the garden and finally people spreading the dirt tohere it needed to be. Everything went so smoothly and without a hitch; everyone was doing theirsigned job so well that it felt as if we, collectively, were a well oiled machine. At noon,we all took ach break, got food, stayed hydrated, and took a breather before they released the butterflies.ter lunch it was time to get back to work. Everyone there was so friendly and appreciative of ourlp and that made the strenuous amounts of work easierand much more worthwhile.
All in all, by the end of the day, we realized three things: 1) We bond over good times, but
e hard times also have the ability to bring people close to each other, even if youve never met.Though the value of service, leadership and fellowhip are great alone, only when you combine allree can you achieve a higher level of greatness. Service events that are led by great leaders go
moother and more efficient, reducing overall confusion and frustration. Intense service projectsite volunteers together and they hold each other up. A charismatic leader will always have willingd able bodies gravitate towards them. 3) That huge mountain of dirt we saw when we first arrived
as gone, and the empty garden was taking on a splendid shape. :)

Each year our California-Nevada-Hawaii dis-
trict, selects a specific service initiate in whichall clubs are encouraged to dedicate themselvesto reaching out and helping that respectivecause. This years District Service Initiative (Dsi)is Speak Out! (Anti-bullying). Thats why ourLarge Scale Service Chair (Sonya Apinyavat), theService Committee, and Ucla Circle K decided tohold an Anti-Bullying Fair at the Boys and GirlsClub at Santa Monica.
On November 23, we left Ucla bright andearly. When we arrived, the staff allowed us touse a very large room and the tables out in theplayground. We decided that in the room wewould set up the games, which included Spin-the-Wheel, Ball Toss, and Dum-Dum Bouquet. For everygame, before we gave out the prizes to the child-ren we would read out a bullying situation and
then asked them what they would do. In this

was the Faces, the kids would take a paper plate, draw themselves, andon the back they wrote positive things about themselves. I also liked
others but, these were my favorite two. :) Unfortunately, not as many children showed up as we had hoped, but nonetheless we still had fun! :) The kids were lots of fun to play witand at the end we played capture the flag and basketball with them. Thstaff was really sorry that not many kids showed up, but they werereally pleased with us, that they asked to come again! (They even offereus work study positions!) I really do hope we have the opportunity togo again! :)
this room we also laid out a re-source table, with lots of pamphleton resources for bullying. Outside,we set up most of the craftingactivities. The purpose of theseactivities were to boost the self

team, Thieves (2), was the best and
we won every single event. At least, thats how I like to remember it.
After breakfast, we headed out to

most exhilarating parts of FTC.
Cheers, screaming, and stomping
echo throughout the room, and there
is an energy that cannot be describ-

Circle K member should definitely
experience.
The rest of the day wasfilled with informative and entertain-

was very worn out by the end of the

After a long 8-hour drive, my

On November 9, 2013, my friends andI drove to San Diego. We were on ourway to Ucsds 16th Annual MasqueradeBall. This was to be my third and finalime attending the party on a tripledecker yacht and I was super stoked.
With my Venetian Black mask in handand my girls by my side, I knew thenight would be one to remember.
We were the first ones from Ucla toarrive at the harbor so we got in lineor the rest of the club. I had brought
my camera and was snapping awayevery picture worthy moment withmy friends. Everyone wanted a picturewith their date, their cubbies, their fa-milies, their mentees and their lines.Shortly after, we were ushered inside
the venue and told on to put ourmasks on for Mask hour. We immedia-tely made a beeline for the top deckfor some breathtaking views and pic-ture spots where we lingered for quitesome time. Then, we decided to venturedownstairs to the photobooth to take
some more pictures. By that time,Mask hour was over and we headedthe dance floor.
My friends and I managed to secure a good spot on the dance floorand danced the night away. The music was amazing!!! I knew at thatpoint, this was where Im supposedto be, at Masquerade Ball, with myfriends having the time of our liveand that feeling was liberating. Yeeeeeah! :) The rest of the night passeby quickly and soon it was time toleave. We didnt want to go, but wewere tired and wanted our beautysleep. It was a night well spent.

Family RevelaonsFamily Revelations was a big day for the incoming new members for Circle K. It w
the long awaited day when everyone found out which family they were in. But it wouldbe that easy. Our MD chair, Billy Shollenberger, made sure of that.
At the start of the event, all members went through the registration process and re-ceived a die. The dice were everyones agenda fro the evening. The colors on the sideswere different for each member. The number signified which activity was taking place, while the colors indicated which group the holder would go to. With 6 sides and a mu
tude of colors, the dice would lead everyone to their families. But the question on everyones mind was: which side represented my family?
A variety of games were played that eveningThe first of which was Boom Chicka Boom Bothe second was Line Up! The third activity was twist. Everyone had a white thrid side. Could it
that everyone was in the same family? Of coursnot. Billy trolled everyone with an 8-clap. Thefourth was Do you Love your Neighbor. The
fifth game was Unique and Shared. At last, the sixth and final side of the die. The members congregated with their fin
colors. Surely, this would be the family. There were no sides left. But as I mentione

find their actual families. The family heads gathered with their new cubbies, their new family. Introductions wmade. Tears of joy were shed. And then, to learn more about each other, everyone playTwo Truths and a Lie with their families. Next, the families were tasked to create afreeze frame skit while the rest of the club tried to guess what was going on. The famdisplayed a variety of memorable scenes, from the final battle at Hogwards to bowling
The final event of the evening was a competition based event, where each family hacreate something that represented their family using the materials provided. The finalproducts were judged by the nice Leonna, the chill Billy, and the douchebag Ben. Justkidding, Ben just judged too hard. Finally, the event wrapped up and families were left mingle and take picutres. Presents, ranging from classy monocles to yummy cupcakes, were handed out to cubbies by their Family Heads.

On Sunday, November 17, the MetroDCM (Divisional Council Meeting) took place in
Wilson Plaza. Before the DCM started, many school in the division were already
there so it was a great time to get to know members of other schools Circle Ks.
The DCM opened with a large icebreaker that consisted of choosing an animal
and finding a group with the same animal through a series of body motions. After
the ice breaker was over, the meeting officialy started with roll call of the
schools, followed by past events and future events. During the presentation, I
learned about many fun events across the division such as the CSUN Latern
Ceremony.
After the DCM concluded we used the second hour to complete a service
project, making turkeys, and we raised money by pie-ing the Metro Lieutenant
Governor (LTG), Charles Balcom. The turkey making was very fun because there
were no set instructions for it; they ranged from hands to snowman shaped
turkeys. It was also a great time to talk to members from other schools becausewe had to share the supplies and throw around turkey decoration ideas. The
other event was pie-ing the LTG as well as the divisional officer that raised the
most donations. Ramon Esquivel had the privilege of being pied due to having the
most money in his jar. Although Ramon was only pied once, LTG Charles Balcom
was pied once for every dollar. Dont miss your chance to come out the the next
DCM; there are always fun events and socializing opportunities!

Alexendria House is a transitional
residence for single women and wo-men with children in the process of moving from emergency
shelter to permanent housing. We provide hospitality to
approximately 24 women and children depending on family
size. Women living in Alexandria House benefit from a supportive community and
an encouraging environment. Residents meet monthly with a case mana-
ger to ensure that they are making progress towards their established
goals, as well as to identify their need for services and resources. Weeklyhouse meetings also provide an opportunity to share personal successes and hopes
and at the same time build community. Alexandria Houses traditional
housing program offers financial management, goal setting pro-
cesses, childcare, counseling, healthcare, and access to other re-
sources such as job search assitance, education, legal counsel, advocacy
and skill-building.
