MINUTES OF THE DECEMBER 4, 2012 MEETING OF THE TRIANGLE AREA OSTOMY ASSOCIATION
Sam Bundy, President, called the December meeting to order at 7:30 PM by welcoming 27+
members and guests. Lots of yummy Christmas finger foods were enjoyed by everyone. Thanks to Stephanie for providing hot cider and cold sodas as well as paper goods.
Ruth Rhodes, Treasurer, stated that we had given $100 to Stephanie Hughes’ and Reuben
Gradsky’s Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation marathon team that raced in Las Vegas. We also contributed $400 to Friends of Ostomates Worldwide. She then read the membership dues policy, which was approved by the board.
Sam then introduced Stephanie Hughes, our Visitor Coordinator. Stephanie and Reuben
participated in the CCFA marathon along with 35,000 racers. The event raised nearly $4,000,000 for the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America. Stephanie thanked everyone for their contributions. She then presented Fred Toms and Bonnie Sessums with gift certificates they won as contributors.
Stephanie Yates announced the following programs for the upcoming year: January - Deirdre Lusk,
Coloplast representative; February - Dr. Ben Hopkins, surgeon from Duke Raleigh; March – Terri Kuczynski, Rex Cancer Center Family Counselor; April – Sonya Withers who will speak on Social Security Disability and other related medical financial issues; May – break-out sessions by ostomy type with area WOC nurses; June – year-end general discussion among members.
Stephanie also announced the visitation training session will be held at Rex on Saturday, February
23 from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Please get in touch with Stephanie if you are interested in attending this training session.
Stephanie then introduced member and WOC nurse Joanna Burgess who is the winner of the
National Great Comebacks Award. Joanna thanked her father, area WOC nurses and members of TAOA for their wonderful support. Joanna gave a brief history of the award, which began in the 1980’s. There are four regional winners that are announced in September and the national winner is announced at the annual WOC nurses convention in June. The award is given to someone who gives hope and courage to others and provides inspiration. After being diagnosed with bladder cancer when she was three, Joanna had a urostomy. Joanna dreamed of becoming a nurse. She received her nursing degree and was a nurse for four years. After extensive surgeries and treatments, including a colostomy caused by radiation and hip replacement, it took Joanna almost 20 years to recover. She then received more training and became a WOC nurse almost 5 years ago. Joanna is truly an inspiration to all of us. She then showed a video introducing the regional winners telling their stories: Karen Lewis, Central region; Randy Henniger, Western region; Jenn Stahl, Northern region; and Joanna herself, Southern region. he video can be seen on YouTube (Great Comebacks Award). To nominate someone, or yourself, for the Great Comebacks Award go to the Great Comebacks web site to fill out an application and tell your story. Congratulations to Joanna! She represents our group very well!
Joanna then presented our “great leaders” with “Gastronaut Puppets”: Gastronaut Ron to Sam
Bundy, and Gastronaut Ruth to Stephanie Yates. Sam adjourned the meeting at 8:35 PM and wished everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New
Year. He reminded everyone that the January meeting will be on Tuesday, January 8th. Deirdre Lusk with Coloplast will provide the refreshments.
. Respectfully submitted, Bonnie Sessums

ATTENTION TAOA MEMBERS
We appreciate the response of many members who pay annual dues between June &
September. Others delay payment and are sent repeated reminders while we wait many
months for their response. The stressful effort to collect unpaid dues has become an unfair
burden on your treasurer. Our future policy is as follows:
TAOA ANNUAL DUES POLICY
*** The ANNUAL TAOA DUES NOTICE will appear in the June edition of our “BY-PASS” newsletter. Payment should be made between June and August for the year beginning in September and ending the following June. One reminder will appear in the September edition of the “BY-PASS”.
*** If there has been no reply at the time of our September meeting, it will be assumed that the member wishes to become inactive. Membership termination will automatically cancel the distribution of the newsletter.
*** Membership can be reinstated by a written request accompanied by payment of dues for the year.
*** Any reasonable circumstances are acceptable. Notify your treasurer if you are unable to pay or if your payment needs to be delayed. This information will always remain confidential!
Your TAOA Board values each member and strives to provide good leadership. We trust that every
member will be fully responsible for adhering to the posted TAOA Dues policy. We appreciate your
cooperation!
