THE WORLD IN WHICH JESUS LIVED
Jesus lived in PALESTINE, a country in the Middle East
• Palestine is also called Israel or the Holy Land
• There were three main areas of Palestine in Jesus’ time. These were: GALILEE, SAMARIA, and JUDEA
– Galilee was mostly a rural area (farming area) where Greek and Roman cultures were popular
• Nazareth was a town in the hills of Galilee, where Jesus grew up
• Capernaum was a town near the Sea of Galilee, where much of Jesus’ public ministry took place. These were the three years that He preached and did miracles publicly.
• Cana was a town in Galilee where Jesus did his first miracle at a wedding.
• Samaria was the area in Central Palestine
– People who lived here were avoided by the Jewish people because they were thought to be heretics
– Heretics are people who are against the established religious beliefs of an area
• Judea was a hot, dry area in southern Palestine
• Bethlehem was the town in Judea where Jesus was born
• Jerusalem was the town where Jesus died• This was a holy city because the TEMPLE
was there
- The city of Jerusalem is still sacred (holy) for three major religions today: Judaism, Christianity and Islam
- Jews, Christians and Muslims are the people who practice these religions.
• All of these religions are monotheistic; they all believe there is only ONE GOD.
• Moses, Jesus, and Muhammad lived in the Holy Land
• The Jordan River runs between the Sea of Galilee and the Dead Sea. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist in the Jordan River.
