Dear Friends,
In all of the planning for our 1,000+ mile cycle ride this summer, one
thing we hadn’t anticipated was the widespread rioting and looting that
broke out in many towns and cities across the country the weekend
before we departed.
In the end, things had pretty much calmed down by the time we went,
and we didn’t encounter any trouble. But we were thankful that we
hadn’t planned the ride to start any earlier, and even when we got back
the reasons behind it all were still being discussed and debated.
No doubt there are many factors which contributed, in a variety of
ways, and I am not going to start trying to analyse them here. But I have
not heard any of the media commentators or ‘experts’ highlight the
most basic underlying cause.
According to the Bible, “The human heart is deceitful above all things,
and desperately sick; who can understand it?” (Jeremiah 17:9)

Few of us are willing to accept that truth, because we shrink from
acknowledging that it is an accurate description of our own hearts. And
of course it is true that the overwhelming majority of people were
appalled by what happened in those few days. But that does not
undermine the accuracy of the Bible’s diagnosis.
All of us, if we are really honest, know that our own hearts are deceitful
and desperately sick. We know that, if they were allowed free rein,
there is no knowing what they might lead us to do, and that it is only by
God’s grace that we are not guilty of many things which rightly appal
us when we see them in others.
That is what reveals the idea that we can have a decent, moral, civilised
society without God for the pipe-dream that it is. Because it is only God
who can cure our desperately sick hearts, and the more we turn away
from him, the more we think we can manage without him, the more
those hearts will show themselves for what they really are.
The real tragedy of our society is that so many people — and so many
influential people — have bought into the lie that we can get along fine
without God. But this summer’s riots show all too clearly where that
will lead.

Woodlands Park Primary School
This term at Woodlands Park school we have welcomed many new
children and families. They have all settled well and are enjoying lots of exciting activities and opportunities.
Due to increased numbers of pupils, we have an additional class this
year. All the classes have new names chosen by the children with an
‘under the sea’ theme. We have also welcomed four new teachers to
Woodlands Park.
Our allotment and poly tunnel is being used once again to grow
vegetables and fruits and the children are enjoying helping out. We are
always looking for volunteers to come and help us to dig and maintain
our allotment on a regular basis. In return we would consider offering a
piece of allotment space for your own use. If you feel you could help us please telephone the school on the number below for more details.
We have another exciting project under way: our new pond. A team of
parent volunteers have been working to dig out and landscape the area.
The pond will be used to enrich the science curriculum for the children
as well as providing an aesthetically pleasing area for our grounds.
This term in the classrooms the children have been enjoying a variety of
interesting activities such as Minibeasts, The Normans, Water and
World War II. The children will be continuing their Forest School
activities at Beechgrove Wood in Marlow as well as taking part in a
variety of outdoor and adventurous visits in the local area.
Once again, please feel free to contact us on 01628 822350 to arrange a
visit to look around and meet our wonderful pupils and staff.
Alternatively take a look at our school website www.woodlandsparkschool.co.uk

Knowl Hill and Waltham Guides have been on their annual summer
holiday. This year saw them holidaying in a bunkhouse in Wales. They had a
fun-filled week full of adventurous activities. One day saw them canoeing
10.5 miles down the River Wye. They also went horse riding through the
beautiful Brecon Beacons. The Guides climbed one of the many cliff faces at
Dinas Rock, where everyone made it to the top, some even with their hands
or feet tied together! Gorge walking, in and out of the water, on and off
rocks, behind and under waterfalls and finally ending with a 12 foot jump
into the chilly waters below seemed to be the most popular activity! Some
more leisurely activities included making their own pizzas for supper, taking a
stroll along the stream near the bunkhouse, going on the Brecon Steam
railway where two girls had their enrolment and doing crafts in the evening.

Red Letter Days
There are lots of differences between England and New Zealand but I suspect
I couldn’t list them all! But the one I am thinking about now is letter boxes.
Here, each home has a letterbox mounted on a stand, normally on the boundary of the property. Given that my wife and I deliver “junk” mail this is
a good thing because otherwise we’d have to walk down a sometimes quite
long pathway to reach the front door.
But wherever your letter box is, there is always the element of surprise when
the letter box is emptied. Perhaps there is only “junk” mail, which gets a brief
look if it relates to a store we are interested in. We also get lots of letters from
Estate Agents who trumpet their achievements selling houses in the area. . . but if one is not interested in selling, such mail is merely annoying. Then there
are the brown envelopes. These normally contain bills don’t they? Sadly we
are obliged to receive these and act on them.
Of course we also receive letters in white envelopes and small packages. Our
letter boxes have a parcel shelf so that larger packages, which do not require a
signature, can be left there. There’s always the chance that such mail may
have been delivered to the wrong address but leaving that aside, these are the items we look forward to and open.
Perhaps it’s someone’s birthday, wedding anniversary or some other special
day in our lives and these days tend to be called red letter days. It’s odd really because ‘red’ letters are often not just bills but final demands!
I assume the same thing is happening in England as it is here. Because of
emails and other ways of communicating via the internet, official mail services are being reduced as the volume of “real” letters falls. That said,
there’s nothing quite like receiving a real greeting from a friend or member of
the family. On some occasions I get a letter from someone who reads this
newsletter and such letters require an answer . . . which isn’t always forthcoming by return of post!
And even as I sit down to complete this newsletter, the post has just arrived
and I have two belated Father’s Day cards - a lovely surprise.
Of course, you can have a Red Letter Day without receiving any actual letters;
it can just be a very special day for any number of reasons. In the Bible, there
are several letters. The apostles wrote them to individuals, like Timothy, and also to local churches which they had been involved with, in many cases
churches that came into being through the apostle’s missionary work.
Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 17
But God also wrote letters and you can read them in the Book of the
Revelation. He had messages to give to seven different churches located in what is now Turkey.
These letters must have marked very special days for each church as they were
read. They contained words of encouragement and praise but also warnings.
They brought promises too to each church. I wonder what God would have to say if He wrote a letter to the White Waltham and Shottesbrooke churches or
to the little church we attend here in Green Island Dunedin? Would there
similarly be messages of congratulation and praise or dire warnings that we need to mend our ways, to return to our first love and do the things for God
that we used to do?
I want to end by reminding you of a very special Red Letter Day that God has told us about in many places in His word. It’s a day that won’t be too much
longer coming! He tells us that we don’t need to grieve for our Christian
friends and relatives who have died, well, not to grieve as though we had no
hope. Indeed, such passings are spoken of as going to sleep which clearly implies a “waking up”.
God says that one day Jesus Christ will return with the clouds to take from the
world all who have “fallen asleep” in Christ together with all Christians who are alive at His coming. Now I know, and indeed the Bible itself tells us this,
that because this event has been such a long time coming, many people say
that God has forgotten His promise and that this return will not be happening. Now that is just like saying that the baby Jesus would not be born in
Bethlehem over 2,000 years ago because the prophecies about that were made
many years before.
Silly eh? Of course, all those detailed prophecies about Jesus being born of a virgin happened in minute detail and so we can take it that all the other
prophecies will also be fulfilled in exactly the same detail. Now the BIG
question - are you ready? Are you ready for God’s Red Letter Day for His church, for all Christians, for all who have given their lives to Him? You can
be - and if you fail to heed the warnings in God’s letters to us you will have no
excuse. Please make sure you are ready. Give your life to Christ; it will be
perfectly safe in His keeping not just for time . . . but for eternity too.

Project Rainbow is White Waltham Church’s building project which will construct purpose built accommodation for the church’s children’s and young people’s activities, and for other church-related activities which will enable St Mary’s Church, White Waltham, to better serve its local community.

The Andrew Family arrived back from their Rainbow Bike Ride on Saturday 3

joined church members and local residents at the party at St Mary's Church to welcome the riders home.
During their 3-week sponsored ride David, Caroline, Naomi nad Thomas cycled 1,147 miles on their two tandems and visited 1,225 bridges. These included modern engineering masterpieces such as the Humber Bridge, iconic structures such as Ironbridge and Tower Bridge, quirky medieval relics like the three-legged Trinity Bridge in Crowland, and a number of new

bridges designed specifically for cyclists. They enjoyed mostly favourable weather (though one 'localised shower' seemed to be centred on two tandems...) and their only mechanical problems were 6 punctures. The Andrews were weary after long days in the saddle, but very pleased to have completed their fundraising challenge for Project Rainbow.
Bob Crittenden, Chairman of Project Rainbow said “We are enormously grateful to David, Caroline, Naomi and Thomas who have spent their summer holiday cycling around Britain to raise funds for Project Rainbow. We don't yet know how much the ride will have raised, but believe it is likely to be over £8,000. But more than that, through the interest generated, it has brought our local project to the attention of many people around the country. The Andrew family have experienced enormous support and we would like to thank everyone who has encouraged and sponsored them”.

Primary School
The start of the new academic year has arrived quickly, the
summer holidays have flown by and we return energised once more
to an exciting term. We have welcomed a number of new children
into a variety of classes, and four new members of staff: Miss
Karen Morgan in Foundation, Miss Zoe King who is working in
classes throughout the school providing PPA cover, and Mrs Piggott
and Miss Hoskins who will be training to become teachers in Year 3
and Year 6 this year. We hope they all have a very happy time with
us. We would also like to extend a warm welcome back to Mrs
Denham after her maternity leave and would like to extend our
congratulation to Mrs Croxford (nee Miss Tolson) who got married
during the summer holiday.
Our school grounds have been enhanced by the conversion of staff
parking to a much needed play area for the foundation, Year 1 and
After School club children. We have been able to retain an area of
staff parking and have started on our long-term project of
replacing the old fencing around the perimeter of the school. Work
continues with the external environment through our links with
Waltham Place maintaining and further developing our outdoor
classroom, vegetable garden and herb bed. The autumn will see lots
of tidying up and more planting taking place, any offers of help and
advice in this area will be greatly appreciated. Our staff contact
person is Mrs Ward-Gittos who works Mondays to Wednesdays and
can be reached on the school number or by the school email.
Work continues with the parish council to provide a fitness area in
Grove Park for the whole community, adults as well as children. We
are also continuing with our project to develop the marsh area so that it becomes a more accessible nature area for all to admire the
wildlife and natural vegetation.
Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 25
Our topics this term are varied, they include Our-selves, Animals,
Romans, The Iron Man and William Shakespeare, the staff are
busy planning visits to interesting venues and as usual our diary is
packed with dates for trips and activities for parents and children.
Our annual Harvest Festival is on Friday September 30th, 2pm at
St Mary’s Church. We are supporting Feed the Children again and
extend an invitation to all to join us.
Year 6 are involved in drama work at Norden Farm, and while they
are studying Shakespeare they will also have the opportunity to
perform an extract of their chosen play at the theatre. Year 5 are
working with Coral Rumble a poet and will be showcasing their work
at the Magnet in November.
May I, as always extend a warm welcome to any visitors. If you
would like any further information, please do not hesitate to call in
and see us, or telephone on 01628 822533 or send us an email on

Accident As my five-year-old son and I were heading to McDonald's one day, we passed a car accident. Usually when we see something terrible like that, we say a prayer for whoever might be hurt, so I pointed and said to my son, "We should pray." From the back seat I heard his earnest voice: "Dear God, please don't let those cars block the entrance to McDonald's."

Tales from the Bells
With the year going by quickly we will be ringing for Harvest Festival to celebrate and give thanks for all that we have reaped. We not only reap the crops but also reap rewards with skill and ability.
We can certainly reap our rewards as two of our ringers who moved out of the area have returned with their family to be with us. Welcome back to Jacquie and Martha Hazell also Richard and David.
Also it is good to have the Andrew family back from their cycle ride. Congratulations on what was such a big challenge. We certainly missed you at ringing but you were in our thoughts on your journey around the country.
Once again I’d like to invite any new recruits or lapsed ringers to contact me if you are interested in joining us at White Waltham and Shottesbrooke.
Please phone or email me at [email protected]. My telephone number is at the back of the parish magazine.
We practice on Friday nights at 7.30pm till 9pm. (at White Waltham on the 2nd, 4th and 5th Friday of the month, and at Shottesbrooke on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month). Initial training will be given at White Waltham Church.

The Council, as always, has been very busy over the summer months. Arrangements are going on regarding The Olympic’s rowing events at Eton/Dorney in 2012 and you can view information on www.rbwm.gov.uk website. Lots of work for the rejuvenation of Maidenhead Town Centre is underway and at the last Development Control Panel planning permission was given for another hotel and a commercial office building in the town centre. It’s really good to know developers consider Maidenhead an up and coming area. More from the council later but first:
Local News
Travellers in Waltham St Lawrence
We know you will be interested to hear that the unauthorised Traveller site in Waltham St Lawrence was dismissed at appeal. This was really good news for the residents who fought an excellent campaign at the appeal. Unfortunately, the Inspector has given the Travellers 18 months to comply so the last date for vacating the site is February 2013. Neighbourhood Plan
As you may be aware RBWM were one of the front running councils selected by the government for involvement in the Localism Bill. In this Ward we are at the beginning of this process and a Steering Committee for Hurley & Walthams has been appointed and the next meeting is on 10
th October. Under
the Neighbourhood Plan each Ward can look at future needs for Housing, Transport, Environment, Communities and Business. Each committee will have several sub committees and information will be sent to every household updating you and requesting your comments. If a resident would like to be involved and feels they can bring their expertise to the sub committees, please get in touch with Cllr Hunt.

Parking
Parking very near the junctions of Smithfield Rd, Willant Close and Foliejohn Way has become a problem insomuch as it obstructs the site line for exiting and is therefore a safety issue. Your three Councillors have requested the council for yellow lines at the junctions only. There is also parking at the roundabout in Foliejohn Way and again your three Councillors have requested yellow lines around this roundabout. Builders Merchants in Smithfield Rd
Under their new licence HGV’s cannot access the company until 07.30 and there is a condition that does not allow for HGV’s to be parked up in Smithfield Rd to await the opening time. If there are breaches of the licence taking place then I am afraid that it will require evidence in support in the form of photographs, video recordings etc in order to prove the allegations. White Waltham Airfield
The annual show at White Waltham Airfield was again enjoyed by so many people. Very few villages have these events and we are indeed fortunate in our Ward of Hurley & Walthams. Complaints arise from time to time and the Airfield do listen and endeavour to rectify any problems. There is a Consultative Committee which consists of representatives from each area - the airfield managers and representatives from your Parish Council and Village Associations. If you do have any problems please contact your Parish Council or Village Association.
News from the Council
Dog Wardens
Community wardens can now issue fixed penalty notices to anyone whom they see allowing a dog to foul and failing to promptly remove the mess. Anyone who refuses to pay the fine (currently £50) can be prosecuted and may face a court appearance with a maximum penalty of £1,000. Wardens will also hand out leaflets outlining the law and how to report irresponsible dog owners, and posters have been put up in borough parks to remind people to ‘Bag it, Tie it, Bin it’. Garden Share
Garden Share aims to overcome a major hurdle for would-be gardeners who don’t have a garden or who want more space – finding unused parts of other
Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 33
people’s gardens for them to tend and cultivate. While the council is also working to expand the number of allotments in the borough, Garden Share is ideal for people who aspire to having an allotment but who don’t want to join the waiting list. Each scheme could be eligible for council grants to help them get started and officers will assist new volunteers to apply for grants and set up the system. A list of available Maidenhead plots can be found at www.maidenheadgardenshare.co.uk and further information about Maidenhead Garden Share is available on 01628 416538. Search is on for Jubilee Wood
Anyone who owns or knows of land potentially available for a new wood is invited to tell the Royal Borough – it could form part of the celebrations of the Queen’s 60-year reign in 2012. Other than Queen Victoria in 1897 Queen Elizabeth II is the only British sovereign to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee and countrywide the challenge is to plant six million trees to commemorate the milestone. At the council’s Rural Forum in June the Woodland Trust, which is spearheading the Jubilee Woods project, described how companies, communities, families and individuals can play their part by:
• creating one of 60 new 60-acre Diamond Woods, marking each year of the Queen’s reign
• creating a new Jubilee wood of an acre or more • planting a tree or trees at school, at work, in public areas or even in
the back garden. Landowners or anyone who can suggest a potential piece of land please contact Kevin Mist, Head of Leisure Services, at [email protected] or by calling 01628 796443. Further details about the Jubilee Woods project can be found by visiting www.woodlandtrust.org.uk and following the link. Three strikes and you’re out – Young people drinking too much
The three strikes initiative is just one of a number of actions being taken to address the problems of underage drinking in the Royal Borough. The police already target ‘hot spots’ around the borough on Friday and Saturday nights as part of Operations Legless and Lawless in an effort to confiscate alcohol from under-18s before they can get drunk. Underage drinking in public places is being tackled across the borough in an innovative ‘three strikes’ approach. This aims to identify young people who are at greater risk of developing a drink problem and to reduce anti-social behaviour caused by young people who are inebriated.
Shottesbrooke with White Waltham Parish Magazine Page 34
If the police catch a young person under 18 drinking they will confiscate the alcohol and take the name and address of the young person. The process is as follows: First time: A letter setting out the three-stage process will be sent to their parents/carers.
Second time: The police will carry out a home visit to speak to the parents/carers of the young person.
Third time: An Acceptable Behaviour Contract (ABC) will be developed requiring a full assessment with the young person's substance misuse worker at T2 and at least one alcohol awareness session. Yellow cards outlining this process will be handed out to young people and posters will be distributed to youth centres and secondary schools around the borough at the start of the new term. If you have any issues you would like to discuss with us, please do contact us either by email or phone.
Our kind regards
Cllrs – Carwyn Cox, David Evans and Maureen Hunt
