Followinghismother’sdeath,RobHortonandhisdadmovefromJacksonvilletoLister,Florida,whereheandhisdadtakeupresidenceinaseedymotel.Robkeepsallofhisemotions“lockedinasuitcase”,refusingtosharehisfeelingswithanyone.UglyredblistershaveappearedonRob’slegs,promptingtheprincipalofhisschooltosendhimhomeincaseheiscontagious.WalkingthroughthemistyFloridawoodsonemorning,Robisstunnedtoencounterareal-lifetigerpacingbackandforthinacage.Ontheverysameday,RobalsomeetsSistineBailey,agirlwhoshowsherfeelingsasreadilyasRobhideshis.Graduallythetwobecomefriendsandthroughthecounselofthemotelmaid,WillieMay,andtheirexperienceswiththetiger,learntheimportanceofsharingtheirfeelingswiththosetheylove,andtrustingtheirfriendswiththeiremotions.

BorninPhiladelphia,Pennsylvaniain1964,KateandherfamilywereforcedtomovetoFloridawhenshewasfiveyearsoldbecauseshesufferedfromchronicpneumonia.ThedoctorsfeltthatthewarmerclimatewouldbegoodforKate’shealth.KatemajoredinEnglishattheUniversityofFloridaandthenwhenshewas30,movedtoMinneapolis.WhileworkinginabookwarehouseshemetarepresentativeforCandlewickPressandsubmittedthemanuscriptforBecause of Winn-Dixie–herfirstofmanysuccessfulnovels.Threeofhernovels,Because of Winn-Dixie, The Tale of DespereauxandThe Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulanehavebeenmadeintomajormotionpictures.AsisthecasewithThe Tiger Rising,animalsgenerallyplayaprominentroleinhernovels.
