• The world is home to five species of rhinoceros – black and the white

rhinoceros, which live in the savannas of Africa, and Sumatran, Javan and Indian rhinoceros live in the tropical

forests and swamps of Asia.

• Javan and Indian rhinoceros have one horn, whereas the others have two.

•The black, Javan and Sumatran rhinoceros are critically endangered on

the IUCN list, while the white is near threatened and the Indian is marked

vulnerable.

• A sub-species of the black rhino, the western black rhino recently became

extinct.
